Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If Restream rejects your YouTube stream key, first identify how you connected YouTube. For an integrated YouTube channel, Restream’s recommended fix is to remove the channel from Restream, reset the key in YouTube Studio, then add the channel to Restream again. If you set up a YouTube event as a Custom RTMP destination, check that event’s URL and key instead. These are different connection methods, so use the steps that match your setup.
First, identify your YouTube connection type
Restream offers two relevant ways to send a stream to YouTube: authorize a YouTube channel through its integration, or configure an existing YouTube event as a Custom RTMP destination. The recovery steps differ.

- Integrated YouTube channel: You added YouTube through Restream’s channel integration. Follow the remove, reset, and re-add sequence below.
- Custom RTMP: You entered details for a particular YouTube event manually. Check that event’s stream URL and key in the corresponding Custom RTMP fields.
Restream’s troubleshooting article, dated March 9, 2026, documents the integrated-channel recovery sequence. Restream: YouTube stream key is invalid.

- Remove YouTube from Restream. Open Channels in Restream and remove the YouTube channel.
- Reset the key in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio’s Stream settings and reset the stream key. You may need a channel owner or manager to do this: YouTube says editors and viewers cannot reset a key. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
- Add the channel back to Restream. In Restream, choose Add Channels, select YouTube, and complete the channel connection again.
- Try going live. If the rejection continues, use the isolation test below before changing encoder settings.
A stream key is a credential used to direct an encoder’s feed to YouTube. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” When a workflow uses a key directly, copy the new key into the encoder after resetting it; an old key may no longer work. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance also advises getting a new key and updating the encoder. YouTube Help: Fix live stream errors.

Fix a Custom RTMP YouTube destination
Do not treat a manually configured event destination as an integrated YouTube channel. For Custom RTMP, open the specific event in YouTube’s Live Dashboard, copy that event’s stream URL and key, and paste each into its matching field in the Custom RTMP channel in Restream. Confirm you have not put the key in the URL field or used details from a different event. Restream documents these as separate setup routes and says RTMP details can be edited in channel settings.
Restream states that Custom RTMP requires a paid plan. API-dependent features such as Restream Chat and Analytics are not available for custom channels. See Restream: How to connect a custom RTMP channel and Restream: How to edit channel settings.

Check whether YouTube will accept the event
Mobile-app-created events
Restream says YouTube events created through the YouTube mobile app are locked to mobile streaming and are not supported through Restream. Use a YouTube event and workflow that Restream supports rather than trying to force that mobile event through the integration. The limitation is specific to events created in the mobile app; it does not mean every YouTube live event must be started from a phone.

Test YouTube directly to isolate the problem
- Try starting a test stream directly on YouTube without sending it through Restream.
- If YouTube rejects the direct stream too, contact YouTube support; Restream recommends escalating to YouTube when the direct test also fails.
- If the direct stream works, return to Restream and recheck the connection type, channel authorization, and—if using Custom RTMP—the URL/key pair for the intended event.
This test separates a YouTube-side problem from a Restream connection or event-configuration problem. Restream’s guidance is to contact YouTube if the direct test fails. Restream’s invalid-key troubleshooting steps.

- Review encoder error messages and CPU load.
- If the encoder output looks healthy, test the outbound internet connection.
YouTube lists these checks in its live-stream error troubleshooting guidance.
Why resetting only the key may not be enough
For an integrated YouTube channel, Restream’s published recovery path includes both resetting the YouTube key and removing and re-adding the channel in Restream. Updating a key in an encoder alone does not complete that channel-reconnection process. For Custom RTMP, by contrast, the important check is that the correct event-specific URL and key are entered in the matching fields.
| Setup route | How credentials are handled | Use it when | Documented limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Integrated YouTube channel | Reconnect the YouTube channel in Restream; follow Restream’s remove/reset/re-add recovery sequence. | You connected YouTube through Restream’s YouTube integration. | Not stated in the cited troubleshooting guidance. |
| Custom RTMP destination | Manually copy an event’s stream URL and key from YouTube into the matching Restream fields. | You need to send to a particular existing YouTube event. | Restream says this requires a paid plan; API-dependent Chat and Analytics do not work for custom channels. |
