Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings do not restart OBS when its process crashes. To recover automatically, you need an external process supervisor that can relaunch OBS—and you must test whether it can handle the kind of crash your setup actually experiences. For a children’s stream where continuity matters, also prepare and test a separate backup encoder; restarting OBS and failing over to a backup are different recovery layers.
What “automatic restart” can—and cannot—mean
YouTube accepts an encoder feed using a stream key, which YouTube Help describes as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Its auto-start and auto-stop controls govern whether the encoder starts or stops the broadcast; they do not relaunch the OBS application after a crash. There are two separate jobs in recovery: restore OBS and its outgoing feed, then confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed and the broadcast is in the intended state. A process supervisor may help with the first job, but a simple rule such as “restart OBS when its process exits” can miss a failure if OBS stays open behind a crash dialog. OBS community users have reported this behavior, but reports are not authoritative documentation and do not establish that every current OBS build behaves this way. Test your actual operating system and OBS version before relying on automation. OBS Project community forums

No currently supported, built-in OBS Studio crash-restart feature or official dialog-suppression method is established. The practical approach is to use an external supervisor only after confirming its behavior in your own environment; do not assume a particular script, plug-in, command-line flag, or workaround is supported.

- Prepare a safe test broadcast. Create an unlisted or otherwise appropriate YouTube test stream. Connect OBS using the YouTube server URL and stream key, then wait for the Live Control Room preview. Test before the real event, as YouTube recommends. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Configure your chosen supervisor for your platform. Set it to detect an OBS process exit and relaunch OBS, using instructions applicable to your operating system and supervisor. The exact supported automation method is not established, so verify it against the current product documentation rather than treating an unverified command or workaround as official OBS functionality.
- Test more than a clean exit. Close OBS normally and confirm that the supervisor detects the exit and relaunches it. Then test the crash-dialog case safely. If OBS remains open awaiting interaction, a supervisor that watches only for process exit may not restart it. Do not perform these tests during a children’s broadcast.
- Check the restored feed. After relaunch, confirm the intended scene and profile are loaded, audio and video are present, and YouTube’s Live Control Room shows the expected incoming stream and broadcast state. Do not assume that a relaunched OBS process means YouTube has recovered. YouTube’s encoder flow calls for checking the preview before going live. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Rehearse the entire failure path. Verify detection, relaunch, feed restoration, and the YouTube player—not just that an OBS window reappears. YouTube recommends testing before streaming and monitoring stream health. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream issues
Protect the stream key
Treat the stream key as an encoder credential: do not expose it in screenshots, logs, or scripts you share. If it is compromised, regenerate it in YouTube Live Control Room and update OBS or the relevant encoder with the replacement. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
For high continuity, test a separate backup encoder
A backup encoder is a separate continuity strategy, not a way to repair the crashed OBS instance. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover in advance by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. Monitor audio and video quality during the event. YouTube Help: Use backup encoders

- LCD DISPLAY PANEL: Features an intuitive LCD screen that displays real-time status information including battery charge level, estimated runtime, load capacity, and input voltage for easy monitoring of your power protection system
Rehearse this independently from the OBS restart test. The important result is not merely that a backup encoder is configured: verify that YouTube receives it and that viewers’ player switches as expected.

- OBS crashed, but the supervisor did nothing: Check whether the OBS process actually exited. A crash dialog can leave it running and defeat an exit-only watcher. Test this failure mode on the same OBS version and operating system you will use live.
- OBS reopened, but YouTube has no preview: Check that OBS loaded the intended scene and profile, that audio and video are present, and that the encoder is connected with the correct server URL and stream key. Wait for the Live Control Room preview and confirm the broadcast state before assuming recovery.
- The preview returned, but the broadcast is not live: Check YouTube’s auto-start/auto-stop and broadcast settings. Those controls affect the broadcast state; they do not restart OBS.
- The backup encoder did not take over: Rehearse failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then verify the player rolls over. A configured backup is not proven until the player behavior has been tested.
- You suspect the stream key was exposed: Regenerate it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder. Keep the new key out of shared logs and screenshots.
