Restore the NVIDIA Tray Icon in Windows: Which Setting to Use

Use the classic NVIDIA Control Panel’s Desktop menu to restore its notification icon—or enable the separate GPU Activity icon if your system supports it.

To restore the NVIDIA Control Panel icon in the Windows taskbar notification area, open the classic NVIDIA Control Panel and select Desktop > Show Notification Tray Icon. If you mean the separate GPU Activity icon, use Desktop > Display GPU Activity Icon in Notification Area instead.

First, identify which NVIDIA icon is missing

NVIDIA has two distinct notification-area icons, and each has its own setting:

  • NVIDIA Control Panel notification icon: A shortcut for accessing key Control Panel settings.
  • GPU Activity icon: Shows programs and displays using the NVIDIA GPU. NVIDIA says this option is available only on systems using its power-saving GPU technology.

Both controls are documented in NVIDIA’s Desktop menu help. The GPU Activity setting is also described in NVIDIA’s guide to power-saving GPU technology.

Turn the Control Panel notification icon back on

  1. Open the classic NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. In its menu bar, select Desktop.
  3. Select Show Notification Tray Icon. This toggles the NVIDIA Control Panel icon in the Windows taskbar notification area, according to NVIDIA Control Panel Help.

Restore the GPU Activity icon instead

In the classic NVIDIA Control Panel, select Desktop > Display GPU Activity Icon in Notification Area. NVIDIA says this menu option appears only on systems using its power-saving GPU technology, so its absence does not necessarily mean the Control Panel is malfunctioning.

If the Desktop menu or setting is missing

Confirm that you opened the classic NVIDIA Control Panel rather than assuming the setting is available in the newer NVIDIA app. NVIDIA’s NVIDIA app release highlights document selected settings migrating from the classic Control Panel, but do not identify this notification-icon toggle as one of them.

Also check which Control Panel category is open. NVIDIA notes that menu-bar options can vary depending on the category in use; its About the Menu Bar page explains this behavior. If the expected menu is not visible, verify the interface and current category before concluding the option has been removed.

The documented fix for the Control Panel icon is its Desktop-menu toggle. The cited NVIDIA help pages do not establish that reinstalling a driver or changing Windows startup settings will restore it.
