What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Responsive pages start with a layout that adapts to the space available—not a fixed list of phone and tablet widths. Set the viewport correctly, build flexible layouts, prevent overflow, serve appropriately sized images, preserve zoom and keyboard access, then measure performance with real-user data as well as lab audits.
1. Set the viewport and let the content define breakpoints
Add a viewport declaration so mobile browsers use the device’s actual CSS width instead of laying out the page on a wider desktop-like canvas and shrinking it:

<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
Do not add restrictions such as maximum-scale=1 or user-scalable=no; they can prevent users from zooming. A correctly configured viewport makes text and layout behave at the intended scale while leaving zoom available.

Device sizes vary, and the same constrained layout can occur when someone magnifies a desktop page. Check widths beyond familiar phone and desktop presets so the layout can accommodate intermediate and future screen sizes.

Check for overflow at each layout state
Horizontal page scrolling usually signals content that has escaped its container. Inspect long strings, fixed-width elements, wide tables, embedded media, and grid or flex children. Correct the offending component or allow it to wrap or scroll within its own context; do not treat sideways scrolling of the whole page as the responsive solution.
2. Make images fit, stay sharp, and reserve their space
A practical baseline constrains images to their containers while preserving their ratio:
img {
max-inline-size: 100%;
block-size: auto;
}
Apply the same containment principle to video and iframes. If an image needs a fixed-ratio frame, use object-fit: contain to show the whole image with possible empty space, or object-fit: cover to fill the frame by cropping. Adjust object-position when the subject needs a specific crop.
Include intrinsic width and height attributes. Even when CSS scales the rendered image, those dimensions tell the browser its aspect ratio so it can reserve space before download and reduce unexpected content movement.
Choose an image workflow that fits the design
For the same image in different rendered sizes or pixel densities, use width-descriptor candidates in srcset and describe the image’s displayed slot with sizes:
<img
src="/images/article-800.jpg"
srcset="/images/article-400.jpg 400w,
/images/article-800.jpg 800w,
/images/article-1200.jpg 1200w"
sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 800px"
width="1200"
height="800"
alt="A sample responsive image">
The browser uses the candidate widths along with the slot hint, viewport, and pixel density to choose a file. sizes is a selection hint, not a replacement for CSS: CSS still determines the displayed dimensions. Check that the declared slot reflects the actual layout; an inaccurate hint can lead to an unnecessarily large or small file.
Rank #3
Use the <picture> element when the design needs art direction—different crops or compositions at different layouts—rather than only different resolutions. There is no universal required number of file variants. Three to five sizes are a common practice, but additional variants trade potentially better delivery for more storage and markup. Choose based on the sizes your layout actually renders and the work involved in generating and maintaining them. Google’s responsive images guidance discusses browser-selected candidates; its workflow also names Thumbor and Cloudinary as image-manipulation options, neither of which is required to use responsive images.
Load images according to their role
Use loading="lazy" for images below the fold so they do not compete for bandwidth before they are needed. Do not lazy-load the prominent hero image likely to be the Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) element. A genuinely critical image may merit high fetch priority, but setting priority indiscriminately can compete with scripts, fonts, and other important resources.
3. Preserve zoom, readable text, and keyboard flow
Responsive design also serves people who magnify a desktop page. Keep user zoom enabled and prefer relative text units such as rem or em so text can scale with user settings. At each breakpoint, test the page at increased zoom as well as at narrow viewport widths.

Check keyboard focus after visual rearrangements. Grid and Flexbox can change the visual order without changing document source order; if those differ, tabbing may seem to jump unpredictably. Ensure the focus sequence remains understandable and follows the meaningful source order. Google’s accessible responsive design guidance covers these considerations.
4. Measure performance using field data and targeted audits
Appearance alone cannot establish whether a responsive page performs well for users. Google web.dev’s Core Web Vitals guidance identifies three user-experience metrics and good thresholds:
| Metric | What it reflects | Good threshold |
|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | Loading | ≤ 2.5 seconds |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | Interactivity | ≤ 200 milliseconds |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | Visual stability | ≤ 0.1 |
These thresholds are evaluated at the 75th percentile of page loads, with mobile and desktop considered separately. Google web.dev’s Web Vitals page was last updated October 31, 2024, and its threshold methodology page was last updated May 7, 2025. Guidance can evolve, so consult those pages for the current definitions when evaluating a site.

Use field metrics to understand actual user experience and lab tools during development to diagnose regressions. Lighthouse can help identify viewport or overflow problems and improperly sized images, but a lab audit is a diagnostic aid, not a substitute for field performance. Google’s responsive web design basics also explains responsive layout checks.

When checking layouts, capture representative viewport sizes, zoom states, and interaction states so visual changes can be compared during development. Screenshots help spot clipping or unexpected rearrangement; they do not replace keyboard testing or field performance measurement.

Responsive design review checklist
- Confirm the viewport declaration uses the device width and does not disable zoom.
- Check fluid layouts at narrow, intermediate, and wide widths; introduce breakpoints where the content needs them.
- Find and fix horizontal overflow rather than accepting whole-page sideways scrolling.
- Constrain images and media, preserve image ratios, and include intrinsic dimensions.
- Use
srcsetandsizesfor resolution switching, andpicturefor alternate crops. - Lazy-load below-the-fold imagery; keep the likely hero/LCP image eager and reserve high priority for truly critical assets.
- Test zoom, text scaling, and keyboard focus sequence after visual rearrangement.
- Review Core Web Vitals at the 75th percentile separately for mobile and desktop, and use lab audits to diagnose—not replace—field results.
