How to Stream a Pre-Recorded YouTube Channel from a Hetzner Dedicated Server

A practical guide to looping prerecorded video to YouTube Live from a Hetzner dedicated server, including encoder settings, capacity checks, testing, rights, and recovery.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can stream prerecorded programming from a Hetzner dedicated server by running an encoder there: it reads your video files, sends a continuous live feed to YouTube’s ingest endpoint, and authenticates with the stream key for your YouTube Live event. For a standard setup, use RTMPS, choose YouTube’s current encoder settings for your resolution and frame rate, and leave about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. The YouTube workflow is documented; whether a particular Hetzner offer is suitable for uninterrupted 24/7 streaming depends on its current hardware, network terms, and traffic policy, which you must verify for the exact server before committing.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel that is eligible to livestream. It must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, and YouTube’s minimum age for livestreaming is 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
  • A Hetzner dedicated server with enough sustained outbound capacity for your chosen stream settings. Check the specific server’s current network and traffic terms; do not assume an advertised port speed guarantees that capacity around the clock.
  • Video and audio files you have the necessary rights to broadcast worldwide, including applicable music rights.
  • An encoder that runs unattended on the server, can read and loop or schedule your media, and can send to YouTube using RTMPS or another protocol YouTube supports.

A server does not upload a video file as if it were a normal YouTube upload. The encoder decodes or reads the media and transmits it as a live feed to YouTube using the event’s ingest address and stream key. YouTube describes the encoder’s role in its encoder setup guide.

Set up the YouTube Live event

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream and select the appropriate visibility and start time.
  2. In the stream settings, copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key. The URL identifies the ingest endpoint; the key authorizes your encoder to send to the event. Keep the key private as you would a password. If it is exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
  3. Use the event’s preview and stream-health indicators when you test the encoder before relying on the feed.

YouTube’s interface may change; follow the labels displayed in the current Studio account. The channel’s livestream activation can take up to 24 hours the first time, so complete eligibility and activation checks well before a planned launch.

Choose an encoder and configure the media loop

Pick software that can run unattended

YouTube lists software encoders, including OBS, as options. On a dedicated server, the important requirements are operational: the encoder must run on the server’s operating system, read the files from local or mounted storage, loop or schedule them as intended, preserve audio/video sync, and restart or recover in a way you can monitor. The cited YouTube material does not establish that a particular Hetzner model or operating-system image is suitable, or that any one encoder has been tested on it.

Set up the playlist or loop before connecting to YouTube. Confirm that transitions between files do not leave unintended gaps, that the audio track is present and at the expected level, and that the schedule behaves as intended after a file ends. If your encoder supports automatic restart, configure and test it; a process that works once interactively may not restart after a reboot or disconnection.

Use RTMPS for the ordinary workflow

For a standard stream, select YouTube/RTMPS in the encoder if it offers that option. Otherwise, enter the RTMPS ingest URL shown in Live Control Room and provide the event’s stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP, for supported workflows. Keep the key out of public scripts, logs, screenshots, and shared configuration files. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Set video, audio, and bitrate from YouTube’s current guidance

For ordinary RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, YouTube’s published guidance specifies H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 frames per second, and a keyframe interval of two seconds recommended and no more than four seconds. Use AAC or MP3 audio. The recommended bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate, so choose the value in YouTube’s current settings table for your intended output rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into playback formats for viewers; that does not remove the need to send a stable feed at the settings you choose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the same resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and media characteristics in your production test that you intend to use after launch. If the source files have mixed formats, confirm what the encoder outputs; do not assume that a file’s properties automatically determine the outgoing stream settings.

When HLS may be appropriate

YouTube also supports HLS for specific use cases, including HDR or codecs not supported through RTMP. HLS has higher latency and requires compliant segments and a rolling playlist, so it adds configuration requirements and is not automatically a better choice for a simple prerecorded loop. Use it only when your codec or HDR needs call for it and your encoder can meet YouTube’s HLS requirements. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.

Check server capacity and test the complete path

Size the outbound connection

Plan around the encoder’s total outbound bitrate, including any backup feed you send. YouTube recommends leaving roughly 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total streaming bitrate; its streaming tips explain that the stream’s total bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth. This is guidance, not a guarantee that a particular server’s connection will be stable.

The relevant capacity is sustained outbound capacity from the selected server and datacenter to YouTube, not the speed of your home connection. Verify the exact Hetzner product’s current network conditions, traffic allowance, hardware-encoding capability if needed, and acceptable-use terms before relying on it for continuous output. The server-specific details are offer- and location-dependent; no universal Hetzner bandwidth cap or permission for this workload is established here.

Test before scheduling a continuous stream

  1. Start the encoder with the intended playlist and exact output settings, then check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health.
  2. Open the watch page and confirm that video and audio are present, synchronized, and playing as expected.
  3. Observe the feed under the media conditions you expect in production, including motion-heavy scenes and transitions between files.
  4. If you configure a backup encoder or feed, test failover rather than assuming it will work. YouTube’s setup guidance recommends testing failover when a backup is configured.
  5. Monitor the server and stream after launch. Network disruptions can interrupt a feed; a continuous schedule requires monitoring and a tested recovery plan, not merely a server that remains powered on.

Rights and monetization are separate from uptime

Confirm your rights cover a live rebroadcast

YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the content provider to have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of the live content on Google services, including relevant music licensing rights. A licence that permits an ordinary on-demand upload may not cover continuous live rebroadcast. Confirm that the licence covers this specific use, territory, and any music or other third-party material before streaming. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions, and follow applicable law and YouTube’s Community Guidelines.

Do not assume a 24/7 loop qualifies for monetization

Technical success does not establish monetization eligibility. YouTube evaluates monetization at the channel level and applies its policies to live streams. Its July 15, 2025 policy update clarified the label “inauthentic content” for repetitive or mass-produced content; the reused-content policy remains focused on whether content adds significant original commentary, modification, or educational or entertainment value. A prerecorded livestream is not automatically disallowed or automatically eligible: originality, variation, value, rights, and the channel’s overall content matter. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The encoder cannot connect: confirm that you copied the correct event’s ingest URL and current stream key, selected a protocol YouTube accepts, and have outbound connectivity from the server. Replace the key in both places if it was changed or exposed.
  • YouTube shows no preview or reports poor stream health: compare the outgoing codec, CBR setting, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate with YouTube’s current table. Check that outbound capacity has headroom and that the encoder is actually sending the selected media.
  • The feed drops during a long run: check server and network logs, sustained outbound capacity, and the encoder’s restart behavior. Test recovery and any backup feed; do not assume a process or host reconnects correctly without verification.
  • Video plays but audio is missing or out of sync: check the source file’s audio track and encoder audio settings, then test transitions between playlist items. Use AAC or MP3 for ordinary RTMP/RTMPS ingestion as specified by YouTube.
  • The stream works but monetization is unavailable: review the channel’s originality, repetition, reused-content, and rights position against YouTube’s channel-level policy. Continuous streaming alone does not establish eligibility.

Or let it run in the cloud

If managing a dedicated server and encoder is more work than you want, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops the uploaded media in the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start at StreamNeo’s free trial registration.
