Choose the Dead Space remake (2023) instead if an isolated sci-fi setting, an engineer protagonist and one haunted mining ship are what appeal to you. There is no evidence-based series-wide winner here; your preferred premise and platform are the better guide.
Resident Evil vs. Dead Space: which horror series should you play first?
The choice is less about deciding which franchise is “better” and more about what kind of setting you want to enter. Resident Evil is a long-running series with games spanning console generations, while Dead Space offers a focused survival-horror setup aboard the mining ship USG Ishimura. Neither publisher’s material establishes a fair comparison of the series’ difficulty, length, combat density or scare frequency.

Why Resident Evil 2 is the practical first Resident Evil
In its October 18, 2024 guide, Capcom USA quotes its staff: “If you’re a new player, start out with Resident Evil 2 (2019). It’s a great jumping-on point for the series.” The guide does not name the individual staff members, so this is best understood as the publisher’s staff recommendation, not a single reviewer’s verdict. Capcom USA’s Resident Evil: Where to Play guide
The recommendation is useful precisely because the series has history: Capcom dates the first Resident Evil to 1996 and describes a catalog spanning console generations. You can enter through the recommended game without treating every earlier title as required homework. Capcom USA’s series guide
#1 Best Overall
- Fight with Weapons and Telekinesis
- Graphics, Effects, and Sound Increase the Horror
- True Zero-G Effects
- Dead Space for Xbox 360 is sure to please any action, adventure gamer looking for a bloody battle against deadly aliens
- Gameplay takes place on the USG Ishimura where the crew has been infected by an alien scourge
Capcom staff also offer a more subjective alternative for readers chiefly seeking scares: “Resident Evil 7 biohazard is the scariest one! Play that one to lose sleep.” That is staff opinion, not a measured comparison of fear across the franchise. Capcom USA’s Resident Evil: Where to Play guide
Why the Dead Space remake suits sci-fi horror newcomers
The 2023 remake places engineer Isaac Clarke aboard the mining starship USG Ishimura to repair it. The crew has been slaughtered, Nicole is missing, and Isaac encounters hostile Necromorphs as the ship’s mystery unfolds. That gives the game a clear, contained premise for someone who wants science-fiction horror rather than the broader history of a multi-generation franchise. EA’s January 27, 2023 launch announcement
Rank #2
- Expansion for Resident Evil: The Board Game; requires the base game to play
- Adds six new scenarios in the Third Floor and underground cave system
- Introduces rotating tiles, boulder traps, poison, and giant Yawn & Black Tiger bosses
- Includes 2 boss miniatures, 11 double-sided game tiles, a rulebook, and 100+ cards
- Expands campaigns with 8+ hours of new board game content or standalone scenarios
EA describes Isaac using engineering tools and skills to fight Necromorphs strategically, solve puzzles and exploit malfunctioning ship systems. The remake also updates the suit and arsenal; Gunner Wright returned as Isaac’s voice and in-game face. These details explain the game’s engineering conceit, but they do not establish that it is harder, more puzzle-heavy or more action-focused than any particular Resident Evil entry. - As consciousness returns and you blink shadows from your eyes, all you can hear is the ringing in your ears. At first, you think it might be from the bells, as you recall racing through the Clock Tower in search of gears to sound the great bell.
- Then the blood drains from your face as the memories begin to surface. You thought you’d escaped Raccoon City. But it isn’t over yet.
- Continue your desperate escape with 11 hours of new gameplay, nine gripping new scenarios, three terrifying new enemy types, and two large-and-lethal bosses.
- This expansion will drastically change the course of your Resident Evil 3: The Board Game campaign, taking you beyond the built-up city streets to brand new locations plagued by new enemies.
- But new enemies aren’t your only threat. To move forward, you must adapt to new gameplay mechanics introduced by the changed environment. Creep silently through the City Hospital. Wade through flood water in the City Park.
Capcom’s article recommending Resident Evil 2 does not provide a complete platform list for that game. Check your local console or PC store for the exact edition rather than assuming availability from the recommendation. Capcom’s guide notes VR versions for Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 7 biohazard and Resident Evil Village; that should not be read as VR support across the entire series. Quick Recap

- Enter the Guard House and underground Aqua Ring in tense new scenarios featuring sinister new mechanics. You’ll encounter flooded tiles, undead insects, the ferocious Neptune, and the constant threat of Plant-42’s searching vines dragging you into the depths...
- Are you brave enough to explore this strange world and face these two huge new bosses, so large they take up multiple squares?
- Including six gripping new scenarios, this expansion adds 8 hours of extra gameplay to your Resident Evil: The Board Game campaigns. Or, play each scenario as a terrifying standalone experience.
Make the choice by premise, not a universal ranking
- Pick Resident Evil 2 if you want Capcom’s recommended entry into Resident Evil’s wider catalog.
- Pick the Dead Space remake if the Ishimura, Isaac’s engineering role and sci-fi survival premise are the draw.
- Before purchasing, verify that the specific game and edition are listed for your platform and region.
