Pixel art is an image made of colored pixels, so it normally needs to be sent as an image or displayed by a graphics-capable system. Choose text art for the character-built look and in-band text sharing; choose pixel art when retaining the image’s visual detail matters more.
What is the difference between ASCII art and pixel art?
ASCII art is a picture made from characters
Strictly, ASCII art uses printable ASCII characters, such as letters, numbers and punctuation, arranged into lines. It was traditionally designed for monospaced, monochrome displays. In everyday use, people also say “ASCII art” for text pictures made with other character sets, so the label does not guarantee that the content is encoded in ASCII. For terminology and history, see Anders Carlsson’s study of text graphics.

ANSI art adds color to character art
ANSI-style text art can assign foreground and background colors to characters, adding tonal options beyond monochrome ASCII. It is still character-based output, and displaying its colors depends on the receiving app preserving and interpreting the relevant color control sequences.

Pixel art is a raster image
Pixel art is an image composed of colored pixels. It can have a deliberately blocky appearance, but its pixels are not text characters. Sharing it as text requires an encoding or a renderer beyond ordinary plain text. Some text graphics use block or shading characters to create a tile-like mosaic; Carlsson discusses these as “text mosaics,” which may be called pixel art informally but remain text graphics.

Which works better for sharing a photo as text?
| Need | Better fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Send a picture in a plain-text channel | ASCII or other character-based text art | It can be copied as text, but detail is represented by character shapes and alignment can vary with the display font and width. |
| Include color in a character rendering | ANSI text art | Color is possible if the receiving app preserves and renders the control sequences; support is not established for every messaging route. |
| Keep the photo’s visual detail | Raster image, including pixel art | Send an image attachment or use a graphics-capable renderer rather than expecting ordinary text to carry the pixels. |
| Get a crisp, block-pixel aesthetic without letter shapes | Pixel art | The image remains raster imagery and is naturally distributed as an image file. |
| Show actual image pixels inside a terminal | A compatible terminal graphics protocol | This is graphics rendering, not plain text, and requires a terminal emulator that supports the protocol. |
There is no sourced head-to-head measurement showing a universal winner for recognizability or fidelity. Text output depends on the available glyphs, output dimensions, color, and resizing or dithering choices; raster display preserves pixels rather than substituting character shapes. The practical choice is about the format and appearance you need, not a proven numeric score.
How do I turn a photo into ASCII art?
- Choose a converter that supports the output you need. The img2txt project documents ANSI output and colored HTML, along with controls for dimensions, target aspect ratio, antialiasing, dithering and color.
- Make the source photo manageable. Crop or resize it around the subject before conversion. A compact output has fewer characters and is easier to paste into text fields.
- Correct for character-cell proportions. Try the converter’s target-aspect-ratio control. Text characters are generally taller than they are wide, so treating each character as a square can make the result look stretched.
- Compare dithering and color settings. Try dithered and undithered output, and adjust color if the converter offers it. These are useful settings to compare, not a guarantee that one choice will work best for every photo.
- Check the result where it will be shared. Paste plain character output into the intended destination and inspect line breaks and alignment. If using ANSI color, verify that the destination renders the control sequences instead of stripping or displaying them literally.
Why does my ASCII photo look stretched?
Character cells are not square, and the font or display width can differ between applications. A converter’s target-aspect-ratio setting can compensate for character-cell proportions, while reducing dimensions can make an output easier to fit. After conversion, check that the destination preserves spaces and line breaks; a font or layout that changes character spacing can disrupt the image even when the text itself is intact.

Will colored ASCII art show up in a message?
Not necessarily. ANSI color is represented through control sequences, and the receiving app must preserve and interpret them. Plain character text may remain readable if color is lost, but the appearance can change. The available documentation does not establish which social networks or messaging services preserve ANSI output, so test the exact route rather than assuming color will survive.
Can a terminal show pixel art without converting it to text?
Yes, if the terminal emulator supports a raster graphics protocol. The kitty terminal graphics protocol documents RGB, RGBA and PNG data, with design goals that include integration with text and alpha blending. This displays image pixels through a compatible terminal capability; it is not ordinary text, and it is not a universal fallback for terminals that lack protocol support.
