For most new players, start with Resident Evil 2 (2019). Capcom’s 2024 getting-started guide gives the same advice: “If you’re a new player, start out with Resident Evil 2 (2019).” It is the most balanced remake, combining modern third-person controls, exploration, puzzles, pursuit horror and a substantial campaign.
Choose Resident Evil (2002) for the most traditional survival-horror experience, Resident Evil 3 (2020) for a shorter and faster Nemesis campaign, or Resident Evil 4 (2023) for the deepest combat system and the broadest action-adventure structure.

The four remakes at a glance
These games are not interchangeable upgrades of one formula. Each remake reflects a different period of the series and a different idea of what Resident Evil should feel like.

What counts as a remake here

Capcom describes the first game as a re-imagined take with substantial graphics, sound and gameplay refinements. The later three were rebuilt with modern technology, and Capcom’s platform announcements group Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 as the modern RE Engine remake set. That does not mean they play alike: the 2002 game is rooted in fixed-camera survival horror, while the other three use an over-the-shoulder perspective and more contemporary movement.

| Approach to the original | Close structural re-imagining | Substantial reworking of spaces and story presentation | More aggressive compression and rearrangement | Modernizes an already action-oriented original |

Resident Evil (2002): the traditionalist’s choice
The 2002 remake is the best pick when the defining appeal of survival horror is learning a hostile place one room at a time. Its mansion is a compact, interconnected environment that rewards memory. You return to earlier rooms with new keys, tools and information, and every detour has to be weighed against ammunition, healing items and inventory space.
Why its atmosphere still works
Fixed-camera framing controls what you can see and often turns a familiar corridor into a threat. Deliberate movement makes every retreat a decision rather than a casual sprint. The rebuilt graphics, sound and encounters give the 1996 design a more substantial presentation without discarding its puzzle-led identity.
Who should start here
- Players who enjoy puzzles and environmental navigation more than constant combat.
- Fans of confined settings, route planning and inventory pressure.
- Anyone interested in the survival-horror design language that influenced later entries.
What to expect before buying
Its control feel is older than that of the RE Engine remakes. The camera is fixed rather than freely controlled, and the game expects patience with backtracking and deliberate positioning. Those are not defects to overlook; they are the source of its tension. If you want modern aiming and continuous third-person movement, Resident Evil 2 is a better first stop.

Resident Evil 2 (2019): the safest all-round recommendation
Resident Evil 2 is the remake to choose when you want one game that demonstrates nearly every side of the series. It combines a modern over-the-shoulder camera with police-station exploration, layered puzzles, resource decisions, enemy pursuit and character-focused campaigns.
Why it works as an entry point
Capcom’s 2024 guide explicitly tells new players to begin here. That recommendation makes sense because the game teaches its systems in a readable order. You explore, unlock shortcuts, decide which rooms to revisit and learn when fighting is worthwhile and when escape is safer. The result is tense without requiring familiarity with the older control conventions.
Capcom reported that the original 1998 Resident Evil 2 had reached 4.96 million cumulative sales in 2019. The remake was built completely from the ground up for the then-current generation of platforms, rather than being a higher-resolution version of the original.

Its strongest replay value
Different character routes and scenario variations give the campaign more than one perspective on the same crisis. Those variations change how spaces, encounters and story beats are understood, making a second run meaningfully different rather than merely faster. Among these four remakes, it is the easiest to recommend both as a first game and as a game to revisit.

Who may prefer another remake
Players seeking the most traditional puzzle-box structure may find the 2002 mansion more focused. Players who want uninterrupted action may prefer Resident Evil 4. If you specifically want Nemesis and a brisk campaign, Resident Evil 3 is more targeted.
Resident Evil 3 (2020): choose momentum over breadth
Resident Evil 3 follows Jill Valentine, Carlos Oliveira and Nemesis through a campaign designed to keep moving. Its strength is immediacy: set pieces arrive quickly, combat is more prominent and the game spends less time asking you to master one large space through repeated visits.
What it does best
- Maintains a brisk pace with little downtime.
- Places Nemesis at the center of the experience.
- Leans into action and spectacle more than the 2002 game or Resident Evil 2.
The trade-off
The same compression that creates momentum limits scope. It offers less of the broad exploration and side-content density that make Resident Evil 2 so replayable. Readers who want the original 1999 game’s wider city structure or a slower survival-horror rhythm may be disappointed by how aggressively this version rearranges and condenses its material.
That is why Resident Evil 3 is the most conditional recommendation. A player who sees a shorter, faster campaign as a benefit may have a great time; a player expecting the breadth of Resident Evil 2 should adjust expectations. Comparative criticism has generally treated it as more mixed than the exceptional response to Resident Evil 2 and the strong reception of Resident Evil 4; that is a judgment about scope and design, not a sales statistic.

Resident Evil 4 (2023): the action-focused remake
Resident Evil 4 preserves the 2005 game’s rural rescue framework while rebuilding combat, stealth, enemy behavior and character relationships for modern play. It is still a Resident Evil game, but its central pleasure is managing dangerous crowds with a growing set of tools rather than enduring a mostly defensive survival-horror crawl.
Why its combat stands apart
Weapon selection, positioning, crowd control and stealth interact constantly. You can create openings, reposition, conserve scarce resources or commit to aggressive attacks when the situation demands it. Encounters escalate into set pieces, so the game feels like a large adventure with horror pressure rather than a single uninterrupted haunted-house experience.
Who should choose it
- Players who value combat variety and tactical flexibility.
- Anyone who prefers a larger journey with frequent action beats.
- Returning fans who want the 2005 structure modernized without losing its adventurous scale.
Choose another remake first if your priority is pure atmosphere, mansion-style puzzle solving or long stretches of avoidance. Resident Evil 4 is the strongest action recommendation, not the strongest traditional survival-horror recommendation.

- Ask whether you want classic constraints. If fixed-camera tension, route learning and limited resources sound appealing, choose Resident Evil (2002).
- If you want a modern first game, choose Resident Evil 2 (2019). It is the broadest balance of horror, puzzles, exploration and combat.
- If campaign brevity and Nemesis matter most, choose Resident Evil 3 (2020). Treat its compression as part of the design rather than expecting the scope of Resident Evil 2.
- If combat is your main priority, choose Resident Evil 4 (2023). Its systems and encounter design give it the most action flexibility.
Best two-game combinations
If you plan to play two remakes, Resident Evil 2 plus Resident Evil 4 gives the widest contrast. The first emphasizes exploration, pursuit and resource management; the second emphasizes weapons, crowd control and set-piece escalation.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
For a history-of-the-series route, play Resident Evil (2002) before Resident Evil 2 (2019). You will see how the remake philosophy shifts from preserving a mansion-centered puzzle structure to rebuilding a familiar story around modern third-person movement.
Choose Resident Evil 3 after Resident Evil 2 if you want to stay with the RE Engine style while moving to a faster, more action-forward campaign. Do not choose it solely because it is the next numbered title if what you really want is another large exploration-focused game.
Platform and edition considerations in 2026
Capcom documents enhanced current-generation versions with features such as ray tracing, high frame rate and 3D audio where the platform supports them. Exact performance options and feature availability depend on the hardware and storefront listing, so check the edition page for your region before buying.

Series context
Capcom reported that the Resident Evil franchise had passed 170 million units worldwide in its 2025 integrated report. That scale helps explain why the remakes pursue different audiences rather than converging on one uniform formula. The 2002 game preserves a classic design vocabulary, Resident Evil 2 modernizes survival horror, Resident Evil 3 concentrates the Nemesis story into a faster ride, and Resident Evil 4 treats the remake as a full action-adventure reconstruction.
Final verdict
Buy Resident Evil 2 (2019) if you want the one recommendation that works for most players. Buy Resident Evil (2002) when atmosphere, puzzles and traditional survival-horror restrictions are the point. Buy Resident Evil 3 (2020) when a concise, high-momentum Nemesis campaign is more attractive than breadth. Buy Resident Evil 4 (2023) when combat variety and a larger adventure matter most.
