The useful comparison is how each character’s role, campaign objective, viewpoint and game mechanics change what the player must do. Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine are trained S.T.A.R.S. survivors and recurring operatives; Leon S. Kennedy develops from rookie police officer into an experienced agent; Claire Redfield’s campaigns emphasize survival and rescue; and Ethan Winters’ first-person games make exploration and danger feel unusually immediate.
The tables and sections below connect each protagonist to the games in which the comparison is most useful, then separate character abilities from mechanics that belong to one particular title. The game list is a selected overview rather than a complete catalogue of every appearance, spin-off or extra mode.

How to compare Resident Evil protagonists fairly
Resident Evil protagonists are not built around a shared statistics screen. The official franchise overview describes a series that mixes action, exploration, resource management, combat, investigation and puzzles, with survival often depending on strategic weapon use and ammunition conservation. Those pressures are better comparison points than an invented strength score. PlayStation’s Resident Evil guide summarizes the major campaigns and their featured characters.
Use five questions when comparing a protagonist:
- What is the character’s experience and role? A civilian survivor, rookie officer, trained operative and established agent enter danger with different narrative assumptions.
- What pressure does the campaign apply? A game may prioritize escape, pursuit, investigation, puzzle solving, scarce resources, organized bioterror response or sustained combat.
- How does the player see and control the world? Ethan’s games use first-person presentation, while other entries use different perspectives and campaign structures.
- Which abilities are actually mechanics? Weapon choice, melee, crafting, stealth takedowns, crowd management and inventory organization must be tied to the specific game in which they appear.
- What is the story function? Rescue, survival, investigation and military-style response create different play rhythms even when the series shares enemies and locations.
These are comparisons of player tasks and observed portrayals, not controlled tests between characters. A remake can change available actions and the feel of a campaign, so identify the edition whenever a mechanic matters.

At-a-glance: protagonists, games and campaign identity
| Protagonist | Main game touchpoints | Role and experience | Useful play-style lens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chris Redfield | Resident Evil; Resident Evil Code: Veronica; Resident Evil 5; Resident Evil 6 | Recurring trained operative; official material identifies him as a S.T.A.R.S./BSAA survivor. | Compare his organized response role and the action emphasis of each campaign, not a universal power ranking. |
| Jill Valentine | Resident Evil; Resident Evil 3; Resident Evil Revelations | S.T.A.R.S. survivor and recurring field operative. | Resident Evil 3 centers on a solo escape-and-survival objective; Revelations places Jill in a search for Chris. |
| Leon S. Kennedy | Resident Evil 2; Resident Evil 4; Resident Evil 6 | His arc moves from rookie police officer to experienced government agent. | Contrast the survival-focused Raccoon City setting with later, more combat-heavy depictions. |
| Claire Redfield | Resident Evil 2; Resident Evil Code: Veronica; Resident Evil Revelations 2 | Civilian survivor who becomes a capable lead across multiple outbreaks. | Her stories foreground survival and rescue, offering a useful contrast with trained-agent campaigns. |
| Ethan Winters | Resident Evil 7 Biohazard; Resident Evil Village | First-person lead whose games combine horror and action. | Close perspective heightens immediacy while exploration, resources and combat decisions remain important. |
The pairings and campaign summaries in this table come from the official PlayStation franchise guide. Capcom’s Resident Evil Revelations manual describes Jill and Chris as S.T.A.R.S./BSAA survivors, while Capcom’s Leon Kennedy profile describes his survival and combat skills and his later government-agent role.
Chris Redfield: trained response and action pressure
Chris is the clearest example of a recurring trained operative. He appears in the original Resident Evil, Code: Veronica, Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6. That range lets you compare how a prepared responder is framed as the surrounding game changes, rather than treating “Chris” as a fixed numerical build.
What his role implies
Chris enters stories with professional training and experience dealing with bioweapons. The S.T.A.R.S./BSAA description supports reading him as an organized field responder, not as an ordinary civilian suddenly learning to survive. His narrative function therefore often aligns with investigation, rescue or coordinated counter-bioterror work.

When a Chris campaign is more action-oriented, the relevant questions are weapon selection, target prioritization, movement under pressure and how the game manages groups of enemies. Those are demands created by the individual title. They do not prove that Chris would win a hypothetical contest against every other protagonist, because the series does not publish a standardized cross-game measurement.

Jill Valentine: escape, investigation and field competence
Jill is paired with Chris in the original Resident Evil, leads Resident Evil 3 and returns in Resident Evil Revelations. She is a S.T.A.R.S. survivor and recurring field operative; the official Revelations manual also identifies Jill and Chris as S.T.A.R.S./BSAA survivors.
Resident Evil 3: a solo survival frame
Jill’s Resident Evil 3 campaign is best understood through its escape-and-survival objective. The player’s priorities are movement, route choices, ammunition decisions and coping with pursuit. This makes Jill a strong comparison point for resource pressure and evasion, even though the character’s professional background distinguishes her from an untrained survivor.
Resident Evil Revelations: investigation and rescue
In Revelations, Jill is placed in a search for Chris. The story function shifts from getting out alive to investigating a threat and recovering a teammate. That change can alter the balance between exploration, evidence gathering, combat and traversal without requiring a different underlying personality or skill set.

Leon S. Kennedy: the largest visible experience arc
Leon’s main touchpoints are Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 6. His arc moves from rookie police officer to experienced government agent, making his games especially useful for comparing how the same protagonist is portrayed at different stages of a career.

- FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
- DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
- A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.

Resident Evil 2: rookie survival in Raccoon City
Leon’s first major setting is the Raccoon City outbreak, where the campaign emphasizes survival, exploration and investigation. The player must read an unfamiliar environment, solve problems and manage limited resources rather than assume the character already has complete control of the situation. Leon shares this setting with Claire, whose civilian-survivor perspective creates a direct contrast within the same outbreak.
Resident Evil 4 and later depictions
Later Leon portrayals are more combat-heavy than the Raccoon City survival frame. That difference should be described as a change in campaign design and character presentation, not as a universal statistic. Capcom’s profile identifies Leon’s survival and combat skills and his later government-agent role, but it does not provide a cross-series rating that can be compared numerically with Chris, Jill, Claire or Ethan.
Claire Redfield: civilian survivor, rescue lead and adaptable operator
Claire appears in Resident Evil 2, Code: Veronica and Resident Evil Revelations 2. She begins as a civilian survivor and becomes a capable lead across several outbreaks. That trajectory makes her useful for readers who want to understand how Resident Evil can center an effective protagonist without presenting the character primarily as a trained government or military operative.

Survival and rescue as the core lens
Claire’s campaigns foreground survival and rescue. Her objectives encourage the player to examine environments, protect or locate other people, solve puzzles and spend resources deliberately. Combat matters, but it is one part of a broader problem: reach safety, uncover what happened and get others out.

Why Claire is not simply “the weaker” comparison
Calling Claire weaker because she is introduced as a civilian confuses backstory with a measured ability score. The documented comparison is about role and mechanics. Her repeated leads show adaptation under outbreak conditions; the games do not establish a controlled test that ranks her against trained agents.
Ethan Winters: first-person immediacy and resource decisions
Ethan leads Resident Evil 7 Biohazard and Resident Evil Village, both described as first-person experiences in the official franchise guide. The viewpoint changes the player’s relationship with danger: threats occupy the same close visual space as the character’s hands, weapons and immediate surroundings.
What first person changes
First-person presentation makes exploration and encounters feel immediate, but it does not remove the series’ strategic layer. Ethan’s campaigns still combine horror and action, requiring decisions about where to search, what to carry, when to fight and when to conserve resources.
How to compare Ethan with the agents
Compare Ethan by pressure and perspective rather than by biography alone. A trained operative may be framed around organized response, while Ethan’s games make the player process uncertainty at close range. The distinction is experiential and mechanical; it is not evidence that one protagonist has a universally superior body, weapon skill or endurance.
Best Value
- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Leon in Resident Evil Requiem: a game-specific combat profile
A January 26, 2026 hands-on report on the PlayStation Blog describes Leon’s sections of Resident Evil Requiem as combat-focused and closer to the action of the Resident Evil 4 remake. The same report contrasts them with Grace Ashcroft’s emphasis on evasion, puzzles and resource management.
Reported mechanics
- Firearms and grenades for direct engagements.
- A combat hatchet that supports parries and stealth takedowns.
- Crafting during the campaign.
- A larger grid-based inventory.
These are reported Requiem mechanics. They must not be projected onto every Leon appearance or used to rewrite the mechanics of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 4 or Resident Evil 6.
Why the hatchet matters to the portrayal
Director Kōshi Nakanishi explained the design choice this way: “it was another way that the team wanted to show that Leon now has a lot more experience [fighting bio-weapons] than he did in previous games…so that was why they ended up changing the knife to a hatchet.” The quote describes the developers’ intention for this portrayal; it is not an independently measured combat score.
Nakanishi also described the accumulated burden behind the depiction: “He’s been fighting biohazards since RE2 where he got his sudden start there. Now it’s been close to 30 years of Leon’s life that he’s been doing that. He’s seen a lot of sacrifice, a lot of tragedy. He couldn’t save everyone in RE2 or RE4. He’s seen a lot. He’s been through a lot. So that’s a weight that weighs down on him.” This gives the Requiem version of Leon a specific narrative context: long service and loss shape how the game presents his competence.
Play-style comparison by what the player must do
| Comparison axis | What to examine | Best examples |
|---|---|---|
| Resource management | How often ammunition, healing items and inventory space force a choice between fighting, searching and retreating. | Raccoon City survival campaigns; Ethan’s first-person horror-action games; Claire’s survival-and-rescue stories. |
| Exploration and puzzles | Whether progress depends on reading spaces, investigating clues and solving environmental problems. | Resident Evil 2, Jill’s investigative role in Revelations and Claire’s outbreak campaigns. |
| Combat intensity | Weapon selection, melee options, crowd management and the amount of sustained action demanded by the title. | Later Leon portrayals, action-oriented Chris campaigns and Leon’s reported Requiem sections. |
| Perspective | How camera placement changes threat awareness and the sense of proximity. | Ethan’s first-person Resident Evil 7 Biohazard and Village versus other campaign structures. |
| Story objective | Whether the immediate goal is escape, rescue, investigation or organized bioterror response. | Jill in Resident Evil 3; Jill in Revelations; Claire’s rescue-focused leads; Chris’s operative roles. |
Which protagonist and game should you start with?
Choose by the experience you want, not by an unsupported “strongest character” list:
- For rookie-to-agent progression: follow Leon from Resident Evil 2 to Resident Evil 4, then compare his role in Resident Evil 6.
- For a survival-and-rescue contrast: compare Leon and Claire in Resident Evil 2, then follow Claire into Code: Veronica or Revelations 2.
- For a trained-operative perspective: use Chris’s appearances from the original Resident Evil through Code: Veronica, Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 as a study in changing action emphasis.
- For escape and pursuit: Jill’s Resident Evil 3 campaign is the clearest match.
- For investigation and a search narrative: Jill in Resident Evil Revelations provides that structure.
- For close first-person horror-action: Ethan’s Resident Evil 7 Biohazard and Village provide the defining viewpoint.
- For a current, combat-forward Leon depiction: the January 2026 hands-on description of Resident Evil Requiem points to firearms, grenades, a hatchet, crafting, stealth takedowns and larger-grid inventory management.
Why a definitive strength ranking does not hold up
The available official descriptions do not publish comparable measurements for strength, durability, accuracy, win rates or campaign completion times. Each game gives its protagonist a different context, camera, inventory model, enemy pressure and objective. Even a familiar action, such as a melee attack, can mean something different when it belongs to a particular title’s control scheme.
The defensible conclusion is therefore conditional: Chris and Jill are recurring trained operatives; Leon’s career progression supports increasingly combat-focused portrayals; Claire demonstrates survival and rescue competence from a civilian starting point; and Ethan’s first-person campaigns emphasize immediacy and resource decisions. Those distinctions explain how the games play without pretending that the franchise has a single official leaderboard.
