What turning off ChatGPT Memory actually changes
ChatGPT has several related but separate ways to use information. A saved memory is a detail retained for future conversations, such as a preference or standing instruction. Reference chat history lets the service use useful information from earlier chats even when that information was not saved as a distinct memory. Chats, uploaded files, Library items, connected apps, custom instructions and model-improvement preferences are separate controls or sources.

Switching off Memory prevents the relevant memory-based personalization from being used going forward, but it is not a deletion command. OpenAI’s Help Center states: “Turning off Memory does not delete your past chats.” Your existing conversations remain in your account unless you delete them, and a saved memory can remain until you remove it through the memory controls. Turning off Reference chat history is different: information remembered from past chats is scheduled for deletion within 30 days, while the original chats remain. It does not delete saved memories.

Find the Memory controls
- Open ChatGPT and open Settings. On the web, select your profile menu and then Settings; in a mobile app, open the app menu and choose Settings.
- Select Personalization.
- Select Memory. Your account may use a slightly different heading, but the memory settings are grouped under Personalization.
- Review every control displayed. Look for the main Memory switch and, where offered, separate switches for Reference saved memories and Reference chat history.
Do not assume that two accounts will show the same arrangement. In some experiences, switching off Reference saved memories also switches off Reference chat history. In others, Reference chat history can be controlled separately while saved-memory reference remains on. Read the explanatory text beside each switch before changing it.
Turn off memory and past-chat reference
Stop future use of saved memories
In Settings > Personalization > Memory, turn off the main Memory or Reference saved memories control that appears. This stops the corresponding personalization feature. It does not delete individual memory records, conversations, uploaded files or the account’s chat history.
Stop information being drawn from earlier chats
If your account shows Reference chat history, turn that control off as well when you do not want future conversations to draw on earlier chats. OpenAI says information remembered from past chats is then scheduled for deletion within 30 days. The chats themselves are not deleted, and this switch does not remove saved memories; those require a separate deletion step.
Understand the safety qualification
Disabling personalization is not a promise that context will never be processed. OpenAI says limited safety and security uses of context can still occur in rare, high-risk situations. Therefore describe the setting accurately as turning off ordinary memory-based personalization, not as a guarantee that the service will have no contextual processing at all.
Delete information ChatGPT has already saved
If your goal is to make a detail disappear rather than merely stop future personalization, use the following sequence. A single action can leave another copy or source intact.

1. Remove the saved-memory entry
Remain in Settings > Personalization > Memory and open Manage or Saved memories, if that option is present. Delete each item you no longer want retained. A memory summary is only a high-level view and may omit details or their sources, so inspect the available Sources or underlying source information rather than assuming the summary is exhaustive.
2. Delete the chat that supplied the information
Find the conversation in your regular or archived chats, open its menu and choose Delete. Deleting a chat removes it from your account view immediately and schedules permanent system deletion within 30 days, subject to the security, legal and de-identification exceptions described in OpenAI’s chat and file retention policy. Deleting only the chat may not remove a separately stored memory, which is why the memory-management step comes first.

3. Check files, Library items and connected apps
If the detail came from an uploaded document, image or other file, check whether a copy was saved in Library and delete it there too. A file stored separately is not necessarily removed when its conversation is deleted. If a connected app supplied the information, disconnect the app or remove the relevant item in that service according to its own controls. Review both the conversation and the external source when the information is sensitive.
4. Allow time for deletion to propagate
Updates are not guaranteed to appear everywhere instantly. OpenAI says it may retain logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. That retention period is different from the account-view behavior for a deleted chat and does not mean a deleted item should continue to appear as an ordinary memory. If an old detail still appears immediately after deletion, wait for propagation, restart the app or sign out and back in before repeating the deletion.
What “Don’t mention this again” does
A documented Don’t mention this again control can reduce future references to a detail, but it is not an eraser. It does not delete the original chat, saved memory or file. Use the memory and source-deletion steps when you need the information removed.

Use Temporary Chat for a single conversation
Temporary Chat is the quickest way to avoid creating or updating memory for one interaction. Start a new conversation and choose Temporary before sending the first message. Temporary chats start non-personalized by default, as described in the Temporary Chat FAQ, but you can choose whether the conversation is personalized before it begins. That choice cannot be changed after the conversation starts.
Non-personalized Temporary Chat
A non-personalized temporary conversation does not use existing memories or custom instructions and does not create or update memories while it remains temporary. This is appropriate for a one-off question where you do not want your normal preferences applied.
Personalized Temporary Chat
You can choose a personalized temporary conversation when you want existing memories, custom instructions or available plugins to help with the answer, while still preventing the conversation from creating or updating memory. This option uses existing personalization, so it is not the right choice when you need the conversation to be completely independent of previously saved details.
History, retention and saving
Temporary chats do not appear in chat history unless you save them. OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. If you save a temporary conversation, it becomes a regular chat and then follows your account’s normal personalization and model-improvement settings. Do not save it if the reason for using Temporary Chat is to keep the conversation outside your regular history.
Memory is not the same as model training
The setting that controls whether your chats can help improve models is separate from Memory. To change that preference, open Settings > Data Controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. The available wording and placement are documented in OpenAI’s Data Controls guide.

Turning off model improvement does not delete saved memories, hide chats or stop Memory from using information in a conversation. Conversely, turning off Memory does not automatically opt your account out of model improvement. Decide which outcome you want and change the corresponding control.
Choose the right control for your goal

Practical scenarios and the correct sequence
You want ChatGPT to stop using a preference but keep your chats
Turn off Memory or the relevant reference switch. Leave your chats in place. This changes future personalization without undertaking account-wide deletion.
You want one sensitive fact removed everywhere you can identify
Delete the matching item under Manage or Saved memories, delete the conversation where you disclosed it, remove any separately stored Library file and disconnect or clean the connected app that supplied it. Check archived chats as well as the main chat list. Then allow time for the changes to propagate.
You want a private one-off conversation but still need your normal preferences
Start Temporary Chat and select the personalized option before the first message. Existing memories and custom instructions may be used, but the temporary conversation will not create or update memories. Do not save the conversation if you do not want it converted into a regular chat.
You want no prior personalization at all
Start Temporary Chat and keep it non-personalized. This avoids using existing memories and custom instructions for that conversation. It does not delete anything already stored in your account, so use the deletion workflow separately if removal is required.
A work or school account has no Memory switch
Managed workspaces can restrict feature availability or place controls under administrator policy. If Personalization contains no Memory option, check the workspace’s published policy or ask its administrator; do not infer that the feature is simply disabled for every ChatGPT account.
Troubleshooting after changing the settings
An old detail still appears in a new answer
- Confirm that you changed the intended control: Memory, Reference chat history and model-improvement settings are separate.
- Open Manage or Saved memories and remove the specific entry; switching off the feature alone does not guarantee deletion.
- Delete the source chat and inspect Library files or connected apps for another copy.
- Wait for propagation, then restart the app or sign out and back in.
- Remember that limited safety and security context processing can still occur in rare high-risk situations even when personalization is off.
The Memory summary does not show the detail you are looking for
A summary is not a complete inventory. Use the available Sources view and inspect the underlying conversation or file. If you cannot identify a source, delete the relevant chats and files you can locate, then review the account again after propagation.
The Temporary option is missing
Feature availability can vary by plan, region, platform and workspace. Update the app if appropriate, check the web interface, and verify that you are using the account in which the feature is expected. A missing option is not evidence that an ordinary chat has temporary behavior.

That is expected: Improve the model for everyone controls model-improvement use, not Memory. Return to Settings > Personalization > Memory and change the memory or reference controls separately.
Retention periods and what they mean
Several time periods are easy to confuse:
- When Reference chat history is turned off, information remembered from past chats is scheduled for deletion within 30 days; the original chats remain.
- OpenAI may retain logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.
- A deleted regular chat is removed from the account view immediately and scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to stated legal, security and de-identification exceptions.
- A copy of an unsaved Temporary Chat may be kept for up to 30 days for safety.
These are service retention statements, not a promise that every internal system updates at the same instant. They also do not replace deletion of a separate Library file or an item held by a connected app. OpenAI’s broader explanation of consumer-service data handling is available at How OpenAI handles data in consumer services.
Keep the settings understandable over time
- Review Personalization after major app or workspace changes because labels and available switches can change.
- When privacy matters for a single conversation, choose Temporary Chat before typing sensitive content.
- When deleting information, record all likely sources: memory entry, chat, archive, Library file and connected app.
- Use Data Controls for model-improvement choices rather than assuming Memory covers them.
- Recheck the setting after signing into a different workspace or account; controls are account- and workspace-specific.
OpenAI’s release notes dated June 4, 2026 describe an update intended to keep memory context more current and reduce stale or contradictory saved memories. That change does not eliminate the need to manage individual entries and source chats when you want information removed; use the controls documented in the ChatGPT release notes and Memory help page.
Bottom line
Use Settings > Personalization > Memory to stop ordinary memory-based personalization, but treat that switch as a behavior control rather than a deletion command. For removal, delete the saved-memory item, its source chat and any separate file or connected-app copy, then allow the published retention and propagation periods. Use Temporary Chat for a conversation that must not create or update memories, and use Data Controls separately when your goal is to stop model improvement.
