Mycelium demonstrations still use deposited copper or copper foil; bacterial cellulose is insulating until conductive additives are introduced; and cable-bacteria conductors remain an early research concept.
What “copper-free” must mean in an electronic device
The phrase can describe three different things, and confusing them leads to exaggerated claims:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Copper-free substrate: The board, film or flexible support contains no copper. Its traces, electrodes, components and connectors may still contain metals.
- Copper-free conductive track: The current-carrying path uses another conductor, such as a conductive polymer, carbon material or biological fiber. Copper may remain elsewhere in the device.
- Copper-free complete device: No copper appears in traces, electrodes, component terminations, wiring, shielding or other parts. This is the most demanding definition and is not demonstrated by the examples discussed here.
A material can therefore be bio-produced without being electrically conductive, and a conductive bio-composite can still contain nonbiological fillers. Any credible claim should identify exactly which layer is copper-free and list the materials used in the complete prototype.

What biotechnology can make today
Biological processes can grow structural materials with useful mechanical or environmental properties. Fungal mycelium can form thin skins that are flexible, lightweight and potentially biodegradable. Bacterial cellulose forms a strong, porous network of nanoscale fibers. Cable bacteria produce electrically conducting fibers over centimeter-scale distances.

Those capabilities solve different engineering problems. A substrate supports a circuit but does not carry its current. A matrix holds conductive particles or polymers but is not conductive in its unmodified state. A biological wire may conduct in laboratory conditions yet lack the manufacturing, insulation, connection and lifetime data required for a commercial circuit. The distinction between biological production and electrical function is the central test for any proposed copper alternative.
Mycelium electronics: a bio-based board with metal traces
The 2022 demonstration
The MycelioTronics study grew and processed fungal mycelium skins as substrates for flexible electronics. The reported maximum trace conductivity was 9.75 ± 1.44 × 104 S cm−1, and the device survived more than 2,000 bending cycles. Those numbers describe the deposited conductor, not untreated mycelium. The study is available in the PNAS research article.
Fabrication deposited a 400-nanometre copper layer with a chromium adhesion layer. Some traces received an additional 50-nanometre gold layer, and laser ablation patterned the conductor. The mycelium supplied the flexible, degradable support; copper and gold supplied the low-resistance circuit path. Calling this circuit “copper-free” would therefore be incorrect.

Surface condition also matters. Mature mycelium can develop a crust that prevents a continuous metal film, while skin age and local surface structure affect conductivity. A manufacturing process would need controlled growth, cleaning or smoothing, adhesion treatment and inspection before a reliable trace could be patterned.
The 2025 follow-up
Advanced Mycelium Skins for Sustainable Electronics reported improved foil surface properties after post-growth treatment. Deposited metallic films reached 18.08 ± 2.38 × 104 S cm−1 and withstood more than 10,000 bending repetitions. These are metallic thin-film results on treated mycelium, not measurements of the fungal substrate itself. See the full article at Advanced Functional Materials.

The work used biodegradable shellac as a moisture-resistant coating and adhesive. It also demonstrated a flexible NFC tag by laminating copper foil onto mycelium and patterning it. Ethanol can dissolve the shellac, allowing the metal to be detached for recovery. That separation route improves recyclability of a mixed material, but the demonstrated tag still contains copper and is not a copper-free device.
Bacterial cellulose: a matrix that needs a conductive phase
Unmodified cellulose is an insulator
Bacterial cellulose is biosynthesized as a mechanically strong, porous fibrillar network. A 2023 review in Carbohydrate Polymers describes as-synthesized bacterial cellulose as an excellent dielectric, meaning it is useful for insulation rather than for carrying current. The review is available at Conductive bacterial cellulose: From drug delivery to flexible electronics.

Reported options include conductive polymers such as polyaniline, polypyrrole and PEDOT; graphene oxide and related carbon materials; nanoparticles; and other conductive fillers. Depending on formulation, these composites have been investigated for flexible batteries, sensors, electromagnetic-interference shielding, conductive scaffolds and wearable or implantable biointerfaces.
What the added phase changes
Conductive filler is not a free upgrade. Loading particles or polymers can reduce tensile strength, decrease porosity and alter the cellulose’s chemical behavior. A formulation that raises conductivity may become less breathable, less flexible, harder to sterilize or more difficult to biodegrade. Percolation thresholds, filler distribution, contact resistance and moisture uptake all influence whether a laboratory coupon performs as a usable electrode.
The 2025 review Bacterial Nanocellulose Functionalization for Smart Bioelectronics describes functionalization with conductive polymers, metal nanoparticles, enzymes and peptides for biosensors, neural interfaces and other smart bioelectronics. Such functionalization expands the design space, but it does not show that unmodified cellulose replaces copper or that every additive is bio-derived. A cellulose composite containing metal nanoparticles is bio-based in its matrix, not necessarily metal-free or fully biodegradable.

Cable bacteria: the closest lead to a biological wire
Cable bacteria are filamentous microorganisms whose internal fibers conduct electrical charge. Their centimeter-scale transport makes them scientifically unusual: the organism itself produces a wire-like structure rather than merely providing a surface for deposited metal. That makes cable bacteria a more direct candidate for a biological conductor than mycelium skins or cellulose composites.
However, the technology is at an early research stage. A 2026 paper studied a pullulan coating intended to preserve the wires’ high conductivity and improve handling. The authors frame the coating as a step toward sustainable bioelectronic systems, not as a demonstration of manufacturable consumer electronics. The article is Pullulan Coating Preserves High Conductivity in Cable Bacteria Wires.
The paper’s introduction states: “Presently, there are no biobased alternatives to conventional conductors such as metals and organic polymers, as their conductivity is too low.” This assessment is attributed to the article’s authors, including Anastasia Gerzhik of Forschungszentrum Jülich and RWTH Aachen University and Dmitrii Pankratov of the University of Antwerp. A protective coating may preserve a biological wire, but it does not solve cultivation at industrial scale, making reliable contacts, insulating adjacent lines, controlling lifetime or integrating the fiber into standard circuit assembly.
How the approaches compare
| Approach | What biotechnology produces | Conductor in the demonstrated work | Copper status | Evidence and likely use | Main constraints |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mycelium skin, 2022 | Flexible biodegradable substrate | Deposited copper, chromium adhesion layer and, in some traces, gold | Copper present in traces | Flexible-electronics demonstration; reported more than 2,000 bends | Surface crust, growth variation and film adhesion |
| Treated mycelium foil, 2025 | Improved substrate and moisture-resistant interface | Deposited metallic thin films; copper foil in an NFC tag | Copper present in the demonstrated tag and conductive layers | More than 10,000 bending repetitions; shellac-assisted metal recovery | Still a mixed metal-bio device; moisture and processing control |
| Bacterial cellulose composites | Porous insulating matrix | Conductive polymers, carbon materials, nanoparticles or other fillers | Depends on the filler; not inherently copper-free or fully biological | Sensors, batteries, shielding and biointerfaces in research literature | Strength, porosity, chemistry and end-of-life tradeoffs |
| Cable-bacteria fibers | Biological conducting fibers | The organism’s own electrically conducting structures | No copper is required for the biological fiber itself, but a complete device is unproven | Early research candidate for sustainable bioelectronics | Scale, contacts, coating, stability, insulation and manufacturing readiness |
Why a copper-free substrate does not make a copper-free circuit
An electronic assembly contains more than its visible board. Copper may be present in traces, vias, foil antennas, connector contacts, wire bonds, heat spreaders or shielding. Integrated circuits and passive components can contain metals and other conventional materials even when mounted on a fungal or cellulose sheet. Solder, adhesives, encapsulants and barrier coatings add further chemistry.
Consequently, a defensible product specification should inventory the whole device. It should state whether “copper-free” applies to the substrate, each current-carrying path or the complete bill of materials. A bio-based board can still be valuable when the objective is lower fossil-material use, flexibility, compostability of one layer or easier separation of metals. Those are different environmental claims from eliminating copper.

Performance questions that must be answered before replacement
Electrical performance
Conductivity values must identify what was measured. The mycelium figures above are for deposited metallic films; cellulose studies generally report composite behavior after conductive additives are introduced; cable-bacteria work concerns specialized biological fibers. A useful replacement also needs contact resistance, current capacity, signal integrity, dielectric behavior, frequency response and resistance drift under humidity and temperature changes.
Mechanical and environmental durability
Bending-cycle counts are encouraging for flexible prototypes, but they do not establish years of service. Mycelium surfaces can vary with growth age and require treatment for continuous films. Cellulose absorbs water unless protected, and fillers can change swelling and fracture behavior. Cable-bacteria fibers need coatings that preserve conductivity while preventing mechanical damage and unwanted electrical contact. Test conditions, strain radius, humidity, temperature and failure criteria must accompany any durability number.
Manufacturing and integration
Conventional electronics rely on uniform sheets, repeatable thickness, clean surfaces, precise patterning and compatible assembly temperatures. Biological materials introduce batch-to-batch variation, residual nutrients, sterilization requirements and sensitivity to drying or rehydration. A viable process must demonstrate roll-to-roll or wafer-scale handling where relevant, trace registration, connector attachment, repairability and quality control—not just a small laboratory sample.
End-of-life: biodegradable layers versus recyclable devices
Biodegradation applies to a material under specified conditions, not automatically to the assembled product. Mycelium or cellulose may break down while copper, gold, chromium, conductive polymers, nanoparticles, shellac and silicon components remain. A mixed device can therefore require disassembly, metal recovery or controlled waste treatment.

That is a recyclability strategy, not proof that the entire NFC tag composts. Cellulose composites face a similar question: conductive fillers must be separated or assessed for environmental release before a disposal claim is made.
Best Value
What would establish a genuine copper replacement?
A credible claim would need evidence at the level being advertised:
- Material identity: A complete composition showing whether the conductor itself is biological, carbon-based, polymeric or metal-filled.
- Electrical benchmarks: Conductivity and contact-resistance measurements under stated humidity, temperature, geometry and frequency conditions, compared with the copper trace being replaced.
- Reliability: Repeated bending, thermal cycling, moisture exposure, oxidation testing and current-load endurance with defined failure limits.
- Manufacturing data: Yield, thickness variation, pattern resolution, substrate area, storage stability and compatibility with component assembly.
- Device accounting: A bill of materials that identifies copper or other metals remaining in components, connectors, shielding and adhesives.
- End-of-life route: Demonstrated composting, separation, recovery or safe disposal for every layer, including conductive additives.
The cited studies establish promising material platforms and laboratory demonstrations, but they do not yet provide that complete evidence package for a copper-free commercial electronic device.
Practical conclusion for designers
Use mycelium when the research question concerns a flexible, potentially biodegradable substrate and accept that the demonstrated traces are metallic. Use bacterial cellulose when a strong porous matrix is useful and you can select, test and eventually recover a conductive additive. Treat cable bacteria as a research direction for biological wires rather than a drop-in replacement for etched copper.
If a project specification says “copper-free,” rewrite it into a testable statement—for example, “copper-free substrate,” “copper-free sensor electrode,” or “no copper anywhere in the assembled device.” That wording determines the material formulation, measurements and recycling plan. On current evidence, biotechnology can reduce or relocate the conventional material burden in electronics, but it has not yet produced a proven, scalable copper-free conductor for general-purpose circuits.
