Resident Evil 4 is Capcom’s 2023 remake of its 2005 survival-horror game. It updates the visuals and story, modernizes combat with features such as knife parries, and is designed to be playable without knowledge of earlier games. If you want Ada Wong’s Separate Ways story, check the edition carefully: it is included in the US PlayStation Gold Edition listing, but is also sold separately.
What is Resident Evil 4 Remake?
Released on March 24, 2023, Resident Evil 4 reimagines Capcom’s 2005 game rather than simply reissuing it with sharper graphics. Capcom describes it as a remake of the original, and its launch materials point to updated visuals, a reworked story, and modernized combat. One concrete combat change is the ability to parry attacks with a knife and follow up with counterattacks. Capcom’s April 25, 2025 investor-relations release also reported that the remake had sold more than 10 million units worldwide as of December 31, 2024.

Do you need to play other Resident Evil games first?
No. PlayStation’s official FAQ says Resident Evil 4 can be enjoyed without prior knowledge of the series. The story follows Leon S. Kennedy on a mission to find the U.S. president’s missing daughter in a European village. Knowing the broader series may add context, but it is not a stated requirement for understanding this game. It combines action with survival horror, so expect horror elements alongside combat rather than a purely action-focused game. PlayStation’s official description characterizes it as survival horror; how frightening that feels is subjective. PlayStation’s FAQ confirms the action-and-horror framing, but does not provide a more specific rating of intensity.

Which platforms can you play it on?
Capcom’s 2025 product details list PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Apple platforms. Availability and exact storefront editions can vary by platform and region. For Apple devices, Capcom’s support information adds important compatibility limits:
- Mac: Apple silicon is required; Intel CPU models are excluded. Mouse and keyboard are supported.
- iPhone and iPad: Controls are optimized for controllers, but Capcom does not guarantee that every controller will work.
- Apple versions: VR Mode is not supported.
Check Capcom’s Apple-platform support FAQ for the device and control details before buying.

Which edition includes Separate Ways?
Separate Ways is an additional story centered on Ada Wong. The US PlayStation listing for the Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition includes the base game, the Extra DLC Pack, and Separate Ways. PlayStation also lists Separate Ways as a separate add-on. That means the add-on’s presence depends on the edition: check the product contents for your platform, region, and storefront before purchasing to avoid buying it twice or assuming it is included. The US PlayStation listing is a concrete example, not a guarantee about editions sold elsewhere.

What to know about the Switch 2 Gold Edition
Capcom has announced a Nintendo Switch 2 Gold Edition with two different release dates: digital release on October 16, 2026, and physical release on January 29, 2027. Both dates are upcoming as of October 4, 2026; the physical edition is not yet available. Check the listing for the edition’s included content and your preferred format when it becomes available. How to choose your version
- Start with your device. Confirm the game is listed for your platform and, on Mac, that your computer uses Apple silicon.
- Decide whether you want Ada’s story. If so, look for an edition that explicitly lists Separate Ways, such as the US PlayStation Gold Edition, or buy the add-on separately where offered.
- Compare format and region. Storefront contents, prices, and physical availability can differ by region; verify the exact listing before checkout. For Switch 2, distinguish the announced digital and physical dates.
- Review Apple control limitations if relevant. On iPhone or iPad, check controller compatibility; Apple versions do not include VR Mode.
There is no comparative performance testing here, so this guide does not rank platforms by frame rate, resolution, or load times.
