Samsung is reportedly moving toward selective dual-sourcing of display-driver integrated circuits (DDIs), rather than abandoning its in-house Samsung System LSI business. TrendForce’s August 2026 account says Samsung Display sought quotations from Taiwan’s Novatek and other suppliers for the 2028 Galaxy S28 Ultra, while Samsung Electronics’ Mobile eXperience (MX) division will make the final supplier decision.
The same reporting says System LSI retained exclusive supply for some Galaxy S27 Ultra and S27 Pro variants, with additional suppliers still being evaluated for standard and Plus models. These are reported sourcing plans, not Samsung-confirmed production awards.

What Samsung is changing
The reported change is a broader qualification effort across several product tiers. For flagship phones, Samsung appears to be testing whether outside DDI suppliers can supplement System LSI when capacity, cost or scheduling makes a second source useful. A separate report says Samsung is also considering GlobalFoundries alongside UMC for DDI production that could reach entry-level Galaxy A-series phones by the end of 2027. That account comes through secondary reporting citing ZDNet Korea and is less certain than the TrendForce report.
Samsung Display is widening its supplier base outside smartphones as well. Seoul Economic Daily reported an agreement with LX Semicon to supply OLED DDIs for information-technology panels such as laptop and monitor displays, with mass production scheduled to begin in March 2026. The reported order volume is hundreds of thousands of units.

Why Samsung wants more DDI sources
Capacity resilience
DDIs depend on foundry capacity, and an allocation shortage at one manufacturer can delay a phone or panel program even when the display design itself is ready. The GlobalFoundries/UMC report specifically attributes Samsung’s search for another source to capacity constraints. Qualifying a second supplier gives Samsung more allocation flexibility when one foundry is full or production priorities change.
Cost and margin pressure
TrendForce linked the Galaxy sourcing review to rising component costs, including memory costs affecting Samsung’s MX division. Omdia reported that display-driver IC prices were also rising as foundry capacity and upstream manufacturing costs tightened, citing 5% to 10% quarter-on-quarter wafer-price increases at several 8-inch foundries in the first quarter of 2026. A second source can improve negotiating leverage, but it does not automatically make the finished DDI cheaper: Samsung must also pay for qualification, engineering changes, testing and additional inventory controls.

What a display-driver IC does
A DDI converts image data from a phone’s application processor into the electrical signals that address individual pixels in an OLED or LCD panel. Samsung Semiconductor lists panel DDI as an official display-IC product category. As TechPixa’s Rob Adaro explained, the chip sits between the processor and the display panel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat position makes the DDI a system component, not a generic commodity that can be swapped without testing. The chip must match the panel’s resolution, timing scheme, refresh-rate modes, voltage and power limits, package, interface behavior and manufacturing tolerances. Display quality, touch and image timing, thermal behavior and production yield all have to remain within Samsung’s requirements. A company capable of fabricating a DDI therefore does not necessarily have a confirmed Galaxy design win.

What this means for Galaxy S27 and S28
Galaxy S27
On the TrendForce account, System LSI had secured exclusive DDI supply for some S27 Ultra and S27 Pro models. Standard and Plus variants were still being evaluated for other suppliers. That suggests Samsung may use different sourcing strategies within one generation, depending on panel configuration, expected volume and qualification timing.
Galaxy S28 Ultra
Samsung Display’s request for quotations from Novatek and other suppliers concerns the 2028 S28 Ultra. A request for quotation is an invitation to price and specify a component, not evidence that the supplier has passed validation or will ship in volume. Samsung MX, rather than Samsung Display alone, is expected to make the final supplier decision for the phone.

Galaxy A series
The possible GlobalFoundries involvement is aimed at entry-level A-series phones by the end of 2027, according to the secondary report. Because that report is less direct, it should be treated as an evaluation path rather than a launch specification.

What the reports do not establish
There is no public Samsung announcement confirming a complete supplier expansion, a change in System LSI’s long-term role or final DDI awards for every Galaxy S27 or S28 model. Supplier assignments can change after electrical validation, panel revisions, yield reviews and commercial negotiations. The clearest dated expansion is LX Semicon’s reported OLED DDI production for Samsung Display IT products beginning in March 2026; the smartphone assignments remain model-specific reports.
Quick Recap
