A report from 9to5Windows says Chrome and Microsoft Edge do not currently provide an equivalent way to lock private windows on Windows. Mozilla has not established a release date, supported Firefox version, authentication method or final interface for the feature.
What Firefox Private Browsing Lock is supposed to do
Private Browsing Lock is an in-development, local access-control feature for Firefox on Windows. Its apparent purpose is to stop someone who has access to an unlocked, shared computer from immediately opening or viewing an existing private-browsing session.

That is different from ordinary Private Browsing. Private Browsing limits the browsing history and other session information Firefox leaves in the device’s normal local history after the session ends; it does not necessarily prevent another person from seeing an open private window. The reported lock would add a separate barrier to access while the private session is open or retained.
The available report confirms development work, not a finished product. There is no established evidence that the feature encrypts a Firefox profile, protects against malware, hides network traffic from an employer or internet service provider, or makes a user anonymous.

The comparison is specifically about a lock on access to a private window in Windows. It is not a claim that Firefox provides broader network privacy than the other browsers.
What is known—and still unknown—about release
Mozilla is working on the feature, but the evidence available for this report does not establish a public release date, a Firefox version, a distribution channel or a final design. Development features can change, be delayed or be withdrawn before general release.

Users should therefore avoid relying on a particular unlock flow. Do not assume that a future implementation will support a PIN, account password, Windows Hello or a fingerprint until Mozilla publishes release notes or support documentation that names the method and supported editions of Windows.

Private Browsing
Mozilla describes Private Browsing as a way to keep browsing history and passwords private on a shared device. It is useful when another person may use the same Windows account or computer, but it should not be treated as a lock on an open session. Anyone who can see the desktop while a private window is open may still see its contents.

Enhanced Tracking Protection
Firefox’s Enhanced Tracking Protection blocks trackers and includes protections against harmful scripts and malware. Those controls affect website content and tracking behavior; they do not authenticate access to a local private window.
Global Privacy Control
Firefox also offers Global Privacy Control (GPC), which users can enable to automatically notify participating websites not to sell or share information from the browsing session on that site. GPC is a website-facing opt-out signal. It does not lock a browser window, conceal the screen from someone nearby or replace an operating-system login.

Data processed on the device
Mozilla’s Privacy Notice says: “Firefox processes a variety of personal data in a way that does not leave your device, such as browsing history, web form data, temporary internet files, and cookies.” That statement describes where certain data is processed; it is not a promise that every activity is invisible to websites, networks or people with access to the computer.
How to protect private tabs on a shared Windows PC now
- Use Private Browsing for the session. Open a private window before entering information that should not be added to the normal local browsing history.
- Lock Windows when you step away. Press
Windows+Lso another person cannot view the browser while your account is unlocked. - Close the private window when finished. Do not leave sensitive tabs open and assume Private Browsing itself will keep their contents hidden.
- Use separate Windows accounts where possible. A separate account reduces casual access to browser windows and local files, although it is not a substitute for strong device security.
- Wait for Mozilla’s documentation before depending on Private Browsing Lock. Check Firefox release notes or Mozilla Support for the supported version, activation steps and recovery process once the feature is officially announced.
These steps address local shoulder-surfing and casual access. They do not prevent websites from receiving information, stop network administrators from monitoring traffic, or defend against malware on the computer.

Why the reported feature matters
Private browsing is often used on family computers, workplace loaners and other shared Windows devices. Existing private-mode controls mainly reduce persistent local records; they do not create a second authentication step for an already-open session. A dedicated lock could close that practical gap without requiring users to close every private tab whenever they leave the keyboard.
The feature’s usefulness will depend on details that remain open: whether it locks individual windows or all private sessions, when it activates, what credentials it accepts, how it behaves after a restart and how users recover access. Until Mozilla publishes those details, the responsible conclusion is limited: Firefox appears to be developing a Windows-only private-session lock, while no equivalent is identified for Chrome or Edge in the report.
