A 2022 synthesis of 2,254 radiocarbon ages from 712 archaeological sites models initial settlement at AD 1250–1275 in the North Island and AD 1280–1295 in the South Island.
Those first communities adapted rapidly to temperate environments unlike the tropical islands they had left. Hunting, seasonal gathering, horticulture, exchange and changing settlement patterns produced regional societies that, over roughly six centuries, developed into distinct iwi and hapū with their own dialects, traditions and political relationships.

What the new chronology shows
The most precise current model does not identify one universally provable arrival year. Instead, it separates several events that older accounts often combined: initial landfall, sustained settlement across a region, population growth and later social consolidation.
| Development phase | Modeled timing | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Initial North Island settlement | AD 1250–1275 | The earliest modeled settlement in the island where later population growth became concentrated. |
| Initial South Island settlement | AD 1280–1295 | A measurable later settlement range than the North Island in the 2022 synthesis. |
| Expansion of moa hunting | Approximately AD 1300–1320 | Rapid exploitation of a large, previously unfamiliar prey resource. |
| End of the main moa-hunting phase | Approximately AD 1400–1415 | A major change in subsistence as moa populations were depleted and communities adjusted. |
| Northward population growth | Approximately AD 1350–1450 | Settlement and population increasingly favored northern areas, influenced by climate and resource availability. |
Archives New Zealand summarizes the broader evidence as Polynesian people arriving from East Polynesia around 1250 to 1300 CE. The narrower ranges are model outputs, not eyewitness dates or exact sailing records.

Why the arrival date became clearer
The 2022 chronology assembled 2,254 previously published radiocarbon ages from 712 archaeological sites. Combining many sites allows researchers to identify patterns that a single charcoal sample cannot establish, including a statistical difference between North and South Island settlement.
Radiocarbon dating in Aotearoa is technically difficult. Marine foods can carry a reservoir offset that makes a sample appear older than it is. Charcoal may come from wood that was already old when burned, while shell, bone and eggshell have different dating reliability. A Scientific Reports study used paired dates from 52 archaeological contexts to build a temporal marine-reservoir model, demonstrating why earlier estimates could be broad.

The improved approach also distinguishes a first landing from sustained, widespread occupation. A voyaging party could reach a coast before communities established repeated settlement, food production and exchange networks elsewhere. Archaeological, oral and environmental evidence therefore cannot be reduced to one unquestionable year.

How the first communities adapted to Aotearoa
Learning a temperate ecology
The ancestors of Māori arrived from East Polynesia with voyaging knowledge and a familiar set of cultural practices, but Aotearoa presented a colder, larger and climatically varied environment. Plants, animals and seasonal cycles differed from those of the tropical islands. The archaeological sequence indicates rapid experimentation rather than a static transplantation of an island way of life.

Moa as an early major resource
Moa hunting began around AD 1300–1320, soon after the modeled settlement windows. The birds were large, flightless and initially widespread, making them an important early source of meat and other materials. The main hunting phase ended around AD 1400–1415. That short interval shows both how quickly communities could exploit an abundant resource and how quickly a subsistence strategy could become unsustainable.
Gathering, horticulture and exchange
Seasonal food gathering remained important. Horticulture was particularly significant in warmer regions, where cultivated plants could be grown more reliably. Communities also moved resources through extensive trade networks, linking places with different climates and ecological specialties. The resulting economy was a flexible mix of hunting, gathering, gardening and exchange rather than a single national system.

How settlement and population patterns changed
Early Māori communities did not remain distributed evenly across both islands. Models summarized by the University of Waikato show population growth and a shift toward northern areas between about AD 1350 and 1450. Climate variability and changing access to resources formed part of this demographic story.

Southern environments supported distinctive adaptations, while warmer northern regions offered better conditions for horticulture. The evidence supports regional trajectories rather than one uniform pattern for all of Aotearoa.

From kin communities to iwi and hapū
Descent was the organizing principle
Te Ara describes society as organized around groups tracing descent from common ancestors. Kin relationships structured obligations, leadership, access to resources and cooperation. Such groups could split, combine or establish new settlements as populations changed; they should not be imagined as a fully formed, unchanging hierarchy present from the first landfall.
Regional institutions developed over generations
By the time of European contact, Archives New Zealand reports that independent and often competing iwi and hapū had developed over roughly six centuries. They also had multiple dialects and regional traditions. This long development turned related settlement communities into distinct political and cultural groups with their own histories and authority structures.
The sequence matters: first came small communities adapting to local conditions; later came durable descent-based institutions, regional identities and competitive relationships. Iwi and hapū were therefore products of historical growth, migration, alliance and separation, not labels that describe an unchanged social order from AD 1250 onward.
What this timeline changes about early Māori history
The clearer chronology links environmental adaptation to social development. Initial settlement occurred within a relatively narrow period, but the society that emerged was not created in a single event. Within decades, communities had developed new hunting strategies and regional settlement patterns. Over the following centuries, resource limits, climate variation, horticulture and exchange reshaped where people lived and how they cooperated.
The best-supported conclusion is consequently a sequence rather than a single date: East Polynesian voyagers reached Aotearoa in the mid-to-late 13th century; North Island settlement probably preceded South Island settlement; moa hunting expanded around AD 1300 and ended by the early 15th century; northern population growth accelerated between about AD 1350 and 1450; and kin-based communities eventually became the diverse iwi and hapū societies recorded at European contact.
