There is no single open-source PowerPoint replacement for every workflow: LibreOffice Impress and ONLYOFFICE are visual slide editors, while impress.js is a code-based browser framework. The right fit depends on whether you need to build slides conventionally, exchange editable PowerPoint files, or author presentations with HTML and CSS. The title’s claim that only one tool “stuck around” reflects an individual experience; the available product documentation cannot establish which one that was or which will suit you.
Three tools, but two different kinds of workflow
LibreOffice Impress and ONLYOFFICE Presentation Editor are conventional slide editors: you create and arrange slides in a graphical workspace. impress.js is a framework for constructing presentations with web technologies and presenting them in a browser. It is not a drop-in visual editor.

That distinction matters more than a feature checklist. If you want to replace PowerPoint with another app that feels like a slide editor, start with Impress or ONLYOFFICE. If you are comfortable working with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and want more control over a browser presentation, consider impress.js.

Impress is the presentation module in LibreOffice. Its guide describes ODP as the default presentation format and documents a familiar slide-making workspace: a Slides pane for selecting, reordering, duplicating, hiding, or deleting slides, alongside Normal, Outline, Notes, and Slide Sorter views. It also supports layouts, master slides, speaker notes, and slide-show controls.

The LibreOffice Impress Guide says, “ODP presentations can be opened by other presentation software like Microsoft PowerPoint and exported in different formats, such as PPT.” That describes a format workflow, not a guarantee that every font, animation, chart, or layout will look identical after opening or exporting a particular deck.
If your goal is to share a presentation for viewing rather than continued editing, LibreOffice documentation recommends PDF as a standard handoff format. Exporting to PDF avoids asking the recipient to use the same presentation editor, though it does not preserve an editable slide deck in the same way as a presentation file.

ONLYOFFICE Presentation Editor: try it against your actual PowerPoint files
ONLYOFFICE describes Presentation Editor as working with PowerPoint slides and says presentations can be saved as PDF, PNG, or JPG. It also states that its free desktop editors can edit local presentations offline. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not independent compatibility results.
Recommended Free Tools
If you regularly receive or exchange PowerPoint files, test the files that matter to you rather than relying on a broad compatibility claim. Open a representative deck, then inspect its fonts, charts, animations, transitions, and slide layouts. Make a copy before editing an important file, and check the exported or round-tripped version in the application your collaborators use.

impress.js: build slides as a browser presentation
impress.js is a presentation framework based on CSS3 transforms and transitions. You author the presentation using web technologies and present it in a modern browser, which makes it a different proposition from replacing PowerPoint with another graphical editor.

The project README says recent versions of Firefox and Chrome are known to work well and describes presenting from a laptop with a known-working browser as a typical use case. It also includes a “Classic Slides” example for people who want a traditional rectangular-slide appearance. That example does not change the underlying authoring model: you still need to be comfortable constructing the presentation with code.

How to choose without risking an important deck
- Choose LibreOffice Impress if you want a conventional desktop slide workspace and are comfortable working in ODP or checking exported PowerPoint files in their target application.
- Try ONLYOFFICE if PowerPoint-file editing and offline desktop use are important. Treat compatibility as something to verify with your own presentations, not a promise of perfect conversion.
- Choose impress.js if you want a browser-based presentation and have the skills to author with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Send a PDF when recipients only need to view the slides. Keep an editable presentation file for people who need to continue editing.
Before moving a presentation workflow, test with a copy of a real deck. Compare the result in the software your audience will use, especially when the file relies on distinctive fonts, animations, charts, or transitions. Documentation establishes that formats and export options exist; it cannot tell you whether a complex presentation will survive your particular exchange unchanged.
What “only one stuck around” can—and cannot—mean
A tool sticking around is a personal outcome shaped by the files you receive, how you prefer to author slides, and how you share them. Public documentation can describe formats, interfaces, and stated capabilities, but it cannot verify an author’s hands-on experience or identify which of these tools remained in use. For a reader choosing among them, the practical test is whether the tool fits the work you actually do—not whether it wins a universal comparison.
