What Win32/Virut does—and why manual removal is risky
Microsoft describes Virut variants as polymorphic file infectors that target Windows .EXE and .SCR files. Depending on the variant, the malware can also open an IRC backdoor that may let an attacker issue commands or download and run files. Microsoft’s descriptions of these variants date to 2009 and were updated in 2017, so they document known behavior rather than establish how common the threat is today. Microsoft Security Intelligence states on its Virut.L threat page: “Manual removal is not recommended for this threat.” Use security software rather than trying to edit, disinfect, or repair infected executable files yourself. Virut can damage files beyond repair, and a clean backup of the operating system and applications may be needed to restore a pre-infection state. - Disconnect the affected computer from shared networks. Turn off Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet while you prepare to scan. This is a precaution because some Virut variants can provide a backdoor; it is not a guarantee that the malware cannot spread or communicate.
- Avoid using the suspect PC for sensitive accounts. Use another trusted device to change passwords or access important accounts if needed.
- Update your security product’s threat definitions, then scan the entire system. Follow the product’s instructions to quarantine or remove detections. If the antivirus product cannot remove a detection, or it reappears after a restart, continue to the offline scan. Do not assume that a single clean result repairs files already damaged by the infection.

Step 2: Run Microsoft Defender Offline if detections persist
Microsoft Defender Offline restarts Windows into the Windows Recovery Environment and scans outside the active Windows session. This can help when malware persists or returns during an ordinary scan. Save open work first because the PC will restart.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection, then Scan options.
- Choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan and select Scan now.
- Allow the PC to restart and complete the scan. Review the results in Windows Security after Windows starts again.

Step 3: Clean-install Windows if infection or damage remains suspected
If detections continue, Windows files may be damaged, or you cannot trust the installation, use Microsoft installation media for a clean Windows installation. Microsoft recommends a clean reinstall from installation media when malware infection is suspected. A clean installation removes Windows, files, apps, and settings from the selected drive, so treat it as destructive. Microsoft Support: Reinstall Windows with the installation media

- Back up essential personal files before reinstalling. Avoid copying programs or executable files from the suspect installation. Scan restored personal files with current security software before opening them. Microsoft advises backing up important files before recovery or reinstallation. - Create installation media on another working PC. Microsoft’s instructions specify a USB drive with at least 8 GB of space. This is a requirement for the media-creation process, not a malware-removal tool. Microsoft Support: Create installation media for Windows
- Boot the affected PC from the media and follow Windows Setup to perform a clean installation. Check Microsoft’s instructions for the Windows version and device you are reinstalling; be certain which drive is selected before proceeding because its contents will be removed.
- After setup, reinstall applications from trusted sources. Restore only the personal files you need, then scan them before use.
If this is a work- or school-managed PC, contact your IT administrator before wiping or reinstalling it.

Choose between another scan and a clean reinstall

Check other computers and shared folders
If the affected PC used shared folders or connected to other computers, cleanup should not stop at one device. Microsoft advises keeping antivirus software up to date on computers that can access or host shares, scanning available network shares, and restricting share permissions as appropriate.
