What the 6 Next to Your Wi‑Fi Icon Means

What does the 6 on my WiFi mean? It identifies the Wi‑Fi generation for the connection shown: Wi‑Fi 6, based on the 802.11ax standard. It is not a signal-strength rating or a reading of your internet speed.

What does the number next to the Wi‑Fi symbol mean?

When a device shows a small 6 beside its Wi‑Fi icon, the number indicates that the connection represented in the interface is using Wi‑Fi 6. The Wi‑Fi Alliance introduced Wi‑Fi 6 as the consumer-facing name for products and networks that support IEEE 802.11ax. Operating-system interfaces can use these generation labels to show which Wi‑Fi generation a device is connected through; the label may change when the device changes networks. Wi‑Fi Alliance’s 2018 announcement describes the naming scheme, and Sony support confirms that its displayed 6 represents a connection using 802.11ax.

The generation names make newer technical standards easier to recognize. For context, Wi‑Fi 5 corresponds to 802.11ac and Wi‑Fi 4 to 802.11n. These names describe generations, not frequency bands.

Does Wi‑Fi 6 mean the connection is using 6 GHz?

No. Wi‑Fi 6 is the generation name for 802.11ax; the 6 in the icon does not by itself indicate a 6 GHz connection. Wi‑Fi 6E is the name associated with Wi‑Fi 6 devices that also support the 6 GHz band.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

To connect over 6 GHz, both the router and the device need compatible hardware. Many older devices do not support that band, and availability can also depend on regional rules. Microsoft explains the router and device compatibility requirement in its guidance on Wi‑Fi and home layout.

Does the 6 tell you how fast or strong the connection is?

No. It identifies the Wi‑Fi generation shown by the device interface. It does not report measured internet speed, signal strength, or guarantee that your connection will be faster. Actual performance depends on the network and connection conditions; the icon alone cannot diagnose a slow or weak connection.

Why might the 6 be missing?

Interface support differs by device and software, so a missing number does not prove that your hardware lacks Wi‑Fi 6. For example, Sony says its devices removed support for these generation icons with Android 13. That change applies to the Sony devices described by its support page, not necessarily to every Android device. Check your device’s network specifications or support information if you need to confirm its Wi‑Fi capability.

Do you need a new router because you see the 6?

No. The icon is information, not a request to upgrade. A Wi‑Fi 6 router matters only if your current access point does not support Wi‑Fi 6 and you want a compatible device to use that generation. The icon by itself is not a reason to replace equipment.
