To delete a Dropbox computer backup from Windows 11, open the Dropbox desktop app and go to account menu > Preferences > Backups > Manage backups > Delete backup, then confirm. This removes the backup from your Dropbox account—not the files stored on your PC.
Delete the backup from the Windows 11 PC
- Make sure the Dropbox desktop app is installed and running. Click the Dropbox icon in the taskbar notification area. If it is hidden, use the up-arrow to show hidden icons.
- Open the round account menu. Depending on your account, it may display a profile photo, initials, or a person icon.
- Select Preferences, then open the Backups tab.
- Under Manage backups, select Delete backup for the computer you want to remove.
- Confirm the computer-backup deletion when prompted.
Dropbox documents this desktop-app deletion option for customers on all plans. Follow the current labels in Dropbox’s instructions for deleting Dropbox Backup.

If you cannot access the PC
If the computer is unavailable, Dropbox says to remove its backup by unlinking that device from your Dropbox account. The cited deletion instructions do not specify the exact account-page clicks for unlinking, so use Dropbox’s current account settings and identify the correct device before removing it. If you still have the PC but uninstalled the desktop app, reinstall Dropbox and use the desktop-app steps above.

What deleting a Dropbox backup changes
The action deletes the computer backup from Dropbox; it does not erase the files on the Windows PC or an external hard drive. Dropbox states, “Deleting the old backup in Dropbox will not delete any files on your computer or external hard drive.” See the Dropbox Backup FAQs.

A Dropbox Backup is stored in your Dropbox account, not downloaded into the Dropbox folder shown in Windows File Explorer. To locate or manage backed-up content, use Dropbox’s Backup area or desktop app; Dropbox describes the feature in its Dropbox Backup overview.
Before removing a backup you may need
Dropbox describes Backup as one-way protection for device content, rather than a way to edit or share backed-up files. If you are switching to a new backup, check that it contains the files you need and download anything missing before deleting the old one. The Dropbox Backup management guide covers managing backups; its interface guidance includes older and updated experiences, so labels may differ from the current deletion flow.

Recovery depends on your Dropbox plan
Dropbox says recently deleted files and folders can be restored for 30 or 180 days, depending on the plan. That range is not a universal promise that a whole deleted computer backup can be restored for the same period: Dropbox says recovery of a deleted backup follows the data-retention period for your plan. Check your plan’s terms before deleting a backup you might need.

Dropbox has documented older and updated Backup interfaces, and the account-menu icon can vary. Check the Dropbox desktop app preferences guide for the Backups tab and “This PC” reference, then follow the current deletion instructions for the actual removal sequence.
