That is why one symbol can look different, appear in black and white, or break into separate pieces on another platform. If its exact meaning matters, check it in the recipient’s context or add a few clarifying words.
What Unicode standardizes—and what it does not
Unicode standardizes characters and recommended emoji sequences, not one universal set of illustrations. Its charts show reference images, while each platform supplies the artwork used to render those characters. The same encoded emoji can therefore have different shapes, colors, or details across platforms. Unicode notes that emoji presentation can vary by platform in its Emoji & Pictographs FAQ; its emoji charts are reference material, not a guarantee of what a recipient’s screen will show.

Why does an emoji look different on my phone?
The sender’s keyboard or preview shows how that sender’s software renders a character. The recipient’s software renders the same text using its own implementation. A different operating system, app, or font can change the visible glyph, including whether it appears in color or monochrome. A preview on your phone is therefore not proof that the recipient will see identical artwork.
Can a character request emoji or text style?
For applicable characters, Unicode defines invisible variation selectors that request a presentation style. U+FE0F requests emoji-style presentation, typically colored; U+FE0E requests text-style presentation, typically black and white. The selector follows the base character. Unicode describes these as requests, not a way to force identical rendering in every app or on every device. See the Unicode emoji FAQ and variation-sequences FAQ.

Why can a combined emoji split apart?
Some things people think of as one emoji are sequences of multiple code points. Keycaps, flags, and modifier combinations are among the sequence types in Unicode’s Emoji Sequences chart. A zero-width joiner (ZWJ) sequence can combine characters into one glyph when the receiving implementation supports and renders it that way. If it does not, the recipient may see separate symbols or a missing-glyph box instead.
Support and handling can vary by implementation. Unicode’s technical guidance says keyboards should generate fully-qualified ZWJ sequences, while implementations determine how to handle less-qualified forms; that guidance does not ensure every recipient’s software will display every sequence as one picture. The version 11 technical specification describes this implementation-dependent behavior in UTS #51.

How to check before you send
- Decide whether the exact image matters. If the emoji carries a joke, emotional nuance, identity detail, or instruction that could be misunderstood, treat it as potentially ambiguous.
- Check the destination, not just your keyboard. When possible, view the message in the recipient’s app and device context. A generic font preview or a chart can help identify the character, but it may not reproduce the destination app’s rendering.
- Add words when interpretation matters. A brief clarification makes the intended meaning less dependent on platform artwork.
These are cautious practical steps based on Unicode’s documented variation; they are not a claim that any particular platform was tested.

The Unicode chart index currently labels its charts Emoji v18.0 and says they draw on UTS #51 emoji data and CLDR annotations and ordering. Unicode also warns that charts and images can be updated, and advises production users to consult the underlying data files when accuracy matters. The chart index is the place to check the current version and materials.

Emoji 17.0 was released on 2025-09-09, according to Unicode’s UTS #51 update document. That release date is historical context: the chart index currently identifies its charts as v18.0, so 17.0 should not be described as the latest chart version.
