Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBefore redirecting someone to a login page, check whether the application can renew the existing session safely. A server-managed session may rotate its identifier, or a token-based app may exchange a valid refresh token for a new access token. Neither method should bypass absolute expiry, revocation, or a rule requiring fresh authentication.
First distinguish the browser cookie from the application session
A browser may retain and send a session cookie, but that does not mean the server should still authorize the session. The cookie carries an identifier; the server decides whether that identifier is valid. Some browsers can also restore session cookies after a restart, so persistence in the browser is not proof of authorization. See MDN’s guide to HTTP cookies.

Keep three server-enforced limits distinct:
- Idle timeout: ends a session after a period without activity.
- Absolute timeout: caps the total lifetime, regardless of activity.
- Renewal timeout: prompts the system to replace or refresh credentials without necessarily asking the user to authenticate again.
Renewal must not turn an expired session into a perpetual one. The server remains authoritative about expiry and revocation; client-side timers and cleanup can improve interface behavior, but cannot replace server enforcement. Timeout choices depend on the sensitivity and use of the session, so there is no universal duration.
Choose renewal based on how the application manages sessions
Server-managed cookie session
At a renewal timeout, the server can issue a new session identifier and invalidate the old one. This limits how long an intercepted identifier remains useful without routinely making users authenticate again, as MDN’s session-management guidance explains. Regenerate the identifier whenever a user authenticates, too, and invalidate its predecessor to reduce session-fixation risk.

- Requires 3 "AAA" batteries (included)
- Unit auto-locks for 30 minutes after 5 consecutive incorrect PINs
Protect the identifier with an appropriately configured cookie. MDN recommends HttpOnly to keep JavaScript from reading it, Secure to restrict transmission to encrypted connections, and the narrowest workable Domain and Path. Select an appropriate SameSite setting and use CSRF defenses as well; cookie attributes do not by themselves eliminate request-forgery risk. See MDN’s secure cookie configuration guidance.
Access token plus refresh token
A token-based application can request a new access token while its refresh token remains valid. The token server should refuse the request after the refresh token has been revoked or otherwise invalidated. Protect token storage: a stolen token can enable session hijacking. This pattern makes refresh-token validation and revocation decisions a separate control point from access-token expiry; MDN discusses it in its session-management guidance.

Browser or federated credential mediation
Browser credential APIs and federated identity providers can sometimes reauthenticate without showing a prompt, but silent sign-in is conditional. With the Credentials API, silent mediation does not display a login prompt and may return no credential when user consent is needed. Check browser and API support, and do not treat an empty result as proof that the account or session is invalid. For a sensitive action, request user mediation rather than relying on silent authentication. See MDN’s documentation for CredentialsContainer.get() and federated sign-in; automatic reauthentication also depends on the identity provider and browser.

Renewal is appropriate only while the server’s rules permit it. Invalidate sessions when events suggest compromise, and require fresh authentication when policy calls for it, including for some high-risk actions. A renewal flow must not silently override revocation, absolute expiry, or a step-up authentication requirement.

Practical renewal flow
- Identify what expired. Determine whether the idle timeout elapsed, the absolute lifetime ended, or only a renewable credential needs replacement.
- Ask the server. Have the authoritative session or token service decide whether renewal is permitted, considering expiry, revocation, and authentication policy.
- Renew safely if allowed. For a cookie session, rotate the identifier and invalidate the old one. For token authentication, exchange a still-valid refresh token for a new access token.
- Fall back to interactive authentication if needed. If renewal is refused, the session is revoked or absolutely expired, or the action requires fresh authentication, send the user through the appropriate login or reauthentication flow.
