You can hide or disable many browser AI features, but there is no single setting that controls your browser, search engine, websites, and extensions at once. Firefox offers the clearest built-in option: on desktop Firefox 148 and later, where available, turn on Settings → AI Controls → Block AI enhancements. Chrome users can hide Gemini, restrict what it can access, and manage on-device models; Brave users can disable Leo and remove its interface. Search summaries and AI tools on websites need separate controls.
First, identify which AI feature you want to remove
“AI bloat” can mean an unwanted button, a feature that processes page content, a model stored on your device, or AI results supplied by a search engine or website. Hiding an entry point is not the same as disabling a feature, and neither necessarily removes the browser code behind it.

| What you see | Likely source | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Assistant in a toolbar, sidebar, address bar, or context menu | Browser | Browser AI settings and toolbar or sidebar customization |
| AI summary or answer in search results | Search engine | Search-provider settings or a different search provider |
| Chat, writing, or summary feature on a page | Website or extension | That site’s settings or the extension’s controls |
| Downloaded model files | Browser or app using on-device AI | On-device AI model settings |
It helps to choose the outcome you want: hide the controls, disable the feature, prevent local model downloads, or remove the software itself. Ordinary browser settings often handle the first three, but rarely promise removal of every AI-related component.
Do a general cleanup before changing browsers
- Open the browser’s Settings and search for terms such as
AI,Gemini,Copilot,Leo,assistant, writing, summarize, tab groups, andlink previews. - Turn off or hide the entry points you do not want: toolbar buttons, sidebars, address-bar prompts, new-tab panels, notifications, and context-menu options where the browser provides controls.
- Review permissions and defaults for page or tab sharing, microphone, precise location, password-manager access, and autonomous browsing. Disable access you do not want an assistant to have.
- Audit extensions. Remove AI extensions you did not deliberately install or no longer use; browser-level controls do not govern every extension’s calls to outside services.
- Check the new-tab page, default search engine, and frequently used sites separately. Their AI features may be independent of the browser assistant.
- Restart the browser, then test a new tab, address bar, right-click menu, sidebar, PDF viewer, search results, and extensions. If available, inspect the browser’s task manager or process list for unexpected activity.
This pass can reduce clutter and access, but it cannot promise to remove AI from websites or search results.

Firefox: use the central AI block
Mozilla announced AI Controls for desktop Firefox 148 and later. Availability can vary by operating system, release channel, geography, and rollout. When the panel is present, open the Firefox menu, choose Settings (or Preferences), select AI Controls, and turn on Block AI enhancements. Mozilla says this global control blocks current and future generative-AI enhancements. Mozilla’s AI Controls guide explains the setting.
Block only selected features
In Settings → AI Controls, set an individual feature to Blocked if you want to keep other browser functions. Mozilla describes three states: Available (visible and usable), Enabled (the user has opted in), and Blocked (hidden and unusable). Controlled features include website translation, PDF image alt-text generation, AI-enhanced tab groups, link previews, and the sidebar chatbot. See Mozilla Support’s AI Controls documentation.
Mozilla says blocking on-device AI features removes models already downloaded for those features and prevents the blocked feature from appearing. This does not stop extensions from independently using third-party AI services. If you rely on translation or generated PDF alt text, block selectively rather than disabling every enhancement.

For managed computers
Administrators can use Mozilla’s documented generative-AI policies and preferences, including browser.ml.chat.enabled, browser.ml.chat.page, browser.ml.linkPreview.optin, and browser.tabs.groups.smart.userEnabled. These are deployment controls, not the normal route for an individual user. Details are in Mozilla’s administrator policy reference.
Chrome: hide Gemini, restrict access, and manage local models
Hide Gemini’s browser entry points
Google’s documented path is More → Settings → AI innovations → Gemini in Chrome. Under Preferences, turn off Show Gemini at the top of the browser. Depending on the device, you can also turn off Show Gemini in Mac menu bar or Show Gemini in system tray on Windows. Another documented option is to right-click the browser’s top area and choose Unpin Gemini. Follow Google’s Gemini in Chrome instructions for current labels.
Limit what Gemini can access
In the same Gemini settings area, review Precise location, Microphone, Share current tab by default, and Let Gemini browse for you. Turn off any access or agentic browsing you do not want. Google says Gemini in Chrome can use the current tab and, on computers, share up to 10 open tabs with Gemini; availability and requirements depend on factors including account, age, region, language, sign-in, and device. The feature is not available in Incognito mode, according to Google’s documentation.

- Privacy Screen Filter Size: If the visible area of your display has the following dimension: Width x Height (Exclude Frame/Arrow 1 to 3 mm errors): 20 15/16" x 11 13/16" (532 mm x 299 mm), then this filter is good for you. Very Important to double check your screen's Width and Height excluding frame before ordering. It's not recommended to make your selection based solely on your screen's diagonal size
- Left and Right Privacy: Not block visibility directly behind you, regardless of distance. The privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (left and right 30 to 180 degree), but clear when looking directly at it. To change the privacy levels, simply adjust your monitor's brightness level accordingly
- Matte and Glossy Sides: It's a reversible privacy screen filter, giving you the flexibility to choose glossy or matte finish. The matte side will have less glare, however the glossy side will have stronger privacy
- Perfect for Open Workspaces: Ensure your working space is bright and well lit. Privacy screens do not work in dimly lit areas
- Two Installation Option: Option 1 uses clear double side adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to take out the privacy screen filter easily as needed
Delete on-device model files
Chrome also provides controls for managing on-device generative-AI models. Use the current Chrome Settings interface to find that control rather than relying on a fixed menu path, which can move. Google says deleting model files makes dependent features unavailable, removes the files from the device, and prevents Chrome from downloading them again while the relevant setting remains off. See Google’s model-management instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThese controls are not a documented universal switch that removes all AI from Chrome. Hiding Gemini does not mean Chrome contains no AI-related code, and it will not remove AI summaries from Google Search, AI-enabled websites, or extensions. Avoid treating chrome://flags as a lasting fix: experimental options can change or disappear; Google community guidance warns that options may not persist across updates (Chrome community thread).
Brave: disable Leo and remove its interface
Brave documents controls to disable Leo, hide its toolbar and sidebar entry points, and clear Leo data. Open Settings, find the Leo or Leo AI Assistant section, and disable it; use Clear Leo data if you want to remove stored Leo-related data. Brave says Leo is opt-in before it becomes active, but you may still want to remove visible controls. See Brave’s Leo disablement guide.

To hide the toolbar icon, use Settings → Appearance → Customize Toolbar; Brave also documents removing Leo from the sidebar. For the address-bar integration, its help material identifies Settings → Appearance → Leo AI Assistant. Current labels may vary; consult Brave’s feature-hiding instructions and Leo’s usage guide.
Hiding an icon is not the same as uninstalling its underlying component. Brave’s enterprise Group Policy can disable Leo more forcefully, including its sidebar chat button and address-bar integration; that is an administrator control for managed devices, documented at Brave Group Policy. Leo controls also do not necessarily control Brave Search AI or experimental AI browsing features, which may have separate controls (Brave’s AI browsing overview).
If you use Edge or Safari
Do not assume that a control documented for Chrome applies to Edge, or that an operating-system AI setting removes every browser feature. Exact labels and availability can depend on browser and operating-system versions, account type, country or language, enterprise policy, and staged rollout. In your browser’s settings, search for Copilot, AI, writing assistance, summaries, and sidebar; then inspect permissions and toolbar customization. Verify the current steps in the browser maker’s own support material rather than relying on an old menu path.

Remove AI from search, sites, and extensions separately
Browser assistants and search results are different layers. Turning off Gemini in Chrome does not automatically remove AI answers from Google Search; disabling Leo does not necessarily remove AI features from Brave Search. A chat box on a website belongs to that site, while a writing button may come from the site or an extension. For search AI, review the search provider’s own settings or choose another provider. For site tools, use the site’s controls or a blocker that targets that site. For extensions, inspect their permissions and remove ones you do not trust.
If a browser assistant still seems to contact an AI service after you disable it, check extensions, site permissions, account-connected apps, and the search engine. Clear AI activity or history where the service offers that option. A browser-wide switch cannot govern every external service.
Should you switch browsers?
| Choice | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Firefox | Readers who want the clearest documented central AI block | Blocking translation, PDF alt text, tab grouping, or link previews can reduce useful functionality; extensions remain independent. The cited AI Controls are desktop-focused. |
| Brave | Readers who want Chromium compatibility and controls for Leo | Leo is one part of a broader product surface; search AI is separate, and hiding controls does not establish that all related code is removed. |
| Chrome | Readers tied to Chrome profiles, Google Workspace, or Chromium compatibility | Google documents Gemini visibility, permission, and local-model controls, not a single durable switch for every AI feature. |
For a reader seeking a mainstream browser with a documented global AI block, Firefox is the strongest fit among these options. Brave is a reasonable alternative if Chromium compatibility matters and you are comfortable managing its separate features. Browser versions change, so no setting should be treated as a promise that future releases will add nothing new.
Do not choose a stripped-down fork solely because it advertises less AI. Check its security-update speed, operating-system support, extension compatibility, telemetry, update behavior, accessibility and translation support, and whether it really disables features or merely hides them. A browser that falls behind on security fixes may be a worse trade than one with controls you must review after updates.
Verify the result and troubleshoot what remains
- The assistant button is gone, but search summaries remain: those results come from the search provider. Change that provider or its settings rather than expecting browser controls to remove them.
- A feature returns after an update: recheck AI settings, toolbar and sidebar customization, and extensions. On managed devices, an administrator policy may override a personal setting.
- A useful function stops working: re-enable only that feature if per-feature controls are available; translations and PDF alt text can be helpful.
- AI still appears on one page: check the site’s own settings and extensions. Browser settings do not control every site’s interface.
- An experimental flag stops working: return to supported settings or use a browser with a documented control; flags are not a durable removal method.
Finally, do not assume that disabling AI makes a browser measurably faster or improves battery life. Removing a model can reduce local storage use, and blocking a feature can prevent related downloads, but a universal performance gain is not established. Test the specific browser and version if speed or battery use is the reason for changing settings.
