Peacock does not officially list Linux as a supported desktop operating system. Its current desktop-browser requirements name Windows and macOS, even though Linux browsers can support Widevine, the DRM technology Peacock uses. That means Linux playback may sometimes work, but it is not a supported or dependable setup.
What Peacock officially supports on desktop
Peacock’s supported devices and platforms page lists these desktop browser requirements, with Linux absent from the operating-system column:
| Browser | Minimum version shown | Desktop operating system shown |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome | 125 or later | Windows or Mac |
| Firefox | 127 or later | Windows or Mac |
| Microsoft Edge | 125 or later | Windows or Mac |
| Safari | 17.3 or later | Mac |
The versions above are those shown on Peacock’s support page when checked on August 16, 2026; its requirements can change. The page does not say every Linux setup is actively blocked, but it does not offer Linux desktop support. A browser that loads Peacock or plays a title once is not proof of an officially supported configuration.
Why Linux DRM support does not guarantee Peacock playback
Protected streaming involves more than a video codec. A browser needs to support HTML5 video and Encrypted Media Extensions, have a compatible content-decryption module such as Widevine, and meet the service’s requirements for the particular stream and playback device.

Google’s Widevine platform documentation lists Linux support, and Google’s Widevine overview identifies Peacock as a Widevine user and Chrome on Linux as Widevine-compatible. That establishes that Linux can handle Widevine in supported configurations; it does not establish that Peacock accepts Linux browsers.
Streaming services set their own supported operating systems, browser combinations, DRM security requirements, and device checks. HDCP or other output-protection requirements, hardware acceleration, advertising delivery, and live-content validation can also affect playback. Peacock’s public device page does not disclose the precise check behind every Linux playback failure, so it is more accurate to describe a platform-support gap than to claim a single confirmed cause.

What to test in Firefox or a Chromium-based browser
If you want to diagnose your setup, treat the following as limited experiments, not a Peacock-approved Linux fix. Menu wording varies by browser release and distribution.
- Update your browser to its current stable release, then restart it.
- In Firefox, check that protected-content playback is enabled and that Widevine is installed and allowed to run. In a Chromium-based browser, check that its Widevine component is present and enabled.
- Temporarily disable extensions that modify user agents, cookies, scripts, playback, or ad delivery. Test in a private window if the browser permits the DRM component there.
- Clear Peacock site data, sign in again, and test without a VPN, proxy, or DNS filter that could interfere with regional or account checks.
- Try a normal desktop session rather than a remote desktop, container, or heavily hardened browser environment.
- Note where playback fails: login, player startup, license acquisition, advertisements, a live stream, or a particular title. Different content can exercise different playback paths.
If these checks do not help, repeated codec installs or browser swaps are unlikely to turn an unsupported operating system into a supported one. The support page does not provide a Linux-specific troubleshooting procedure.

Why common workarounds are unreliable
User-agent spoofing
A user-agent switch can change the browser identity a website sees, but it does not necessarily change DRM capability, hardware security, output protection, the license request, or eligibility for ads and live programming. Linux users have reported mixed results; those reports are anecdotal, not a dependable compatibility guarantee. See the community discussion at Reddit.
Installing more codecs or changing browsers
Codecs and browser DRM components can resolve local playback problems, but they cannot establish Peacock support for Linux. Chrome, Firefox, or Edge on Linux remains outside the operating systems Peacock names for desktop use.

Virtual machines and Android containers
A Windows or Android virtual machine may be worth experimenting with, but protected playback can fail when hardware acceleration, DRM, or protected video output is unavailable. An Android container on a Linux desktop is not equivalent to an officially listed Android TV device. Neither approach is a guaranteed substitute for a supported receiver.

Peacock lists many non-desktop platforms on its official support page. Use the app on a supported device where possible:

- Consoles: PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
- Phones and tablets: Android 7.0 or later and iOS 16 or later.
- Other listed options: NVIDIA Shield and certain cable-provider set-top boxes.
Model and software requirements vary, so check Peacock’s current list before buying hardware. If you already own a smart TV, console, or streaming device, its Peacock app is usually the simplest choice. Google TV or Chromecast casting is a possibility, but Peacock listing Chromecast support does not guarantee that every Linux browser can cast successfully. Prefer playback in the receiver’s Peacock app or casting from a supported mobile device over desktop mirroring.
Should you subscribe if Linux is your only playback device?
If Linux is your only device and you have no supported TV, console, phone, or streaming box, do not subscribe on the assumption that a browser workaround will work. Confirm playback on a device you can use first; plan offers and cancellation terms may vary at checkout.
Quick Recap
Paying for a higher tier does not appear to add Linux desktop compatibility: Peacock’s plans page describes content, advertising, downloads, and live programming, while the device page separately defines supported platforms. The U.S. prices shown on Peacock’s plans page on August 16, 2026 were Select at $7.99 monthly or $79.99 annually, Premium at $10.99 monthly or $109.99 annually, and Premium Plus at $16.99 monthly or $169.99 annually. Prices and availability can change. Premium Plus has exceptions to its no-ads benefits, including some sponsored pages, live sports and events, and certain programs.
