The award recognized the phone’s computational photography, new Macro Focus capability, improved zoom and launch-era value. It was that publication’s editorial choice—not an industry-wide certification or a current camera-phone ranking.
Why the Pixel 7 Pro won Android Headlines’ 2022 award
In its November 7, 2022 award article, Android Headlines’ Alexander Maxham pointed to a combination of camera improvements and Google’s established reputation for computational photography. The case was not that one feature alone made the phone the winner: Macro Focus added a new kind of close-up photography, improved zoom broadened what the camera system could do, and Google’s image processing remained central to the Pixel’s appeal.

That rationale describes the outlet’s judgment. The article does not publish a scoring rubric, a list of finalists, standardized test results or a sample-by-sample comparison, so it cannot establish how each factor was weighted or prove that every competing phone was evaluated on the same terms.

What the camera improvements meant
Macro Focus added close-up versatility
The article identifies Macro Focus as a much-requested addition. In practical terms, macro photography is about capturing small subjects at close range; its presence expands the kinds of shots a phone can attempt. The award article does not provide detailed technical specifications or test examples, so it supports the claim that the feature helped make the Pixel 7 Pro more versatile, not a broader claim about how its close-ups compared with every rival.
#1 Best Overall
- Google Pixel 7 Pro is Google’s best-of-everything phone; powered by Google Tensor G2, it’s faster, more efficient, and more secure, with the best photo and video quality yet on Pixel[1].Other camera description:Front,Rear
- Unlocked Android 5G phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel’s Adaptive Battery can last over 24 hours; when Extreme Battery Saver is turned on, it can last up to 72 hours[3]
- The Google Pixel 7 Pro 6.7-inch Smooth Display makes everything stunning and immersive[4]; it intelligently adjusts up to 120Hz for smoother, more responsive performance[4]
- Google Pixel 7 Pro has a 5x telephoto lens with 30x Super Res Zoom[5]; the upgraded ultrawide lens powers Macro Focus to capture the smallest details
Zoom was part of the case
Android Headlines also cited significant progress in zoom capability. That mattered to the award’s versatility argument: a camera phone is useful across more situations when it can frame subjects at different apparent distances. The article does not quantify the improvement or report comparative zoom testing, so the claim should be read as the outlet’s assessment rather than a measured ranking.
Processing mattered alongside camera hardware
The article presented Google’s computational-photography reputation as part of the Pixel’s continuing strength. That is a software-and-imaging argument as much as a hardware one: the award rationale was not simply a claim about camera components. It also did not assess every part of camera performance. In particular, the article offers no dedicated comparison of video, motion capture, skin tones, portrait edges, low-light artifacts or manual controls.
Rank #2
- Google Pixel 7 Pro featuring a large 6.7-inch QHD+ LTPO OLED display, offering vivid colors and ultra-smooth 120Hz performance powered by the advanced Google Tensor G2 chip for optimized on-device AI and daily responsiveness.
Why price strengthened the award case
Android Headlines cited the Pixel 7 Pro’s $899 launch-era price and contrasted it with competing flagship phones priced at $999 or more. Those figures are the article’s 2022 context, not current prices. The comparison suggests that value contributed to the selection: the outlet was judging the camera experience in the context of the phone’s price, rather than presenting the award as a camera-only laboratory result.
The article also discussed broader phone improvements
The award article mentioned Direct My Call and Clear Calling, along with improved modem performance, signal strength and battery life compared with the predecessor. It also acknowledged that battery life was not class-leading. These points help explain the phone’s broader appeal as a flagship, but they are not evidence of camera quality and should not be confused with the reasons for the camera award.

What the award does—and does not—establish
- It establishes Android Headlines’ choice: the publication selected the Pixel 7 Pro as its Best Camera Smartphone for 2022.
- It does not establish consensus: the article does not show that the wider industry or all reviewers agreed, or document every competitor considered.
- It is not a reproducible test result: there is no disclosed formal rubric, benchmark, finalist list or side-by-side sample set.
- It is not a timeless ranking: a 2022 editorial award cannot show that the Pixel 7 Pro is the best camera phone in 2026 or beats phones released after it.
“Best camera” also depends on what a buyer values. Still-photo consistency, zoom, close-ups, video, portraits, color rendering and price can point to different choices. The award article emphasizes computational photography, Macro Focus, zoom and value, but does not explain how it would rank those priorities against one another.

Treat the award as historical context for why the phone stood out to Android Headlines in 2022, not as current buying advice. The cited article does not establish present-day availability or pricing, remaining software support, condition of used or refurbished devices, or performance against newer camera phones. Those questions require current, separate verification.

For a second-hand device, the specific unit matters: battery health, screen and camera-module condition, warranty, seller grading and return terms can affect the purchase more than an award it received years earlier. Network compatibility and warranty coverage may also vary by region. The 2022 article does not answer those questions.
