How to Hide the Recycle Bin from the Desktop in Windows 11 and 10

Use Desktop icon settings to hide the Recycle Bin in Windows 11 or 10. The change hides the icon but does not empty or disable the Recycle Bin.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can hide the Recycle Bin icon without deleting the Recycle Bin or its contents. In Windows 11 and Windows 10, open Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings, clear Recycle Bin, then select Apply and OK. To show it again, check the box instead. Microsoft documents this setting for both Windows versions.

Hide the Recycle Bin icon in Windows 11

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Personalization, then Themes.
  3. Under related settings, select Desktop icon settings.
  4. In the Desktop Icons list, clear the Recycle Bin checkbox.
  5. Select Apply, then OK.

The icon should disappear from the desktop. This changes desktop icon visibility; it does not remove the Recycle Bin from Windows. Microsoft’s desktop-icon instructions cover Windows 11 and Windows 10. Labels or page layout may vary slightly between builds.

Hide the Recycle Bin icon in Windows 10

  1. Open Settings and select Personalization.
  2. Select Themes, then Desktop icon settings.
  3. Clear Recycle Bin.
  4. Select Apply or OK.

The route is the same in Windows 10 and Windows 11, though the Themes page can look different depending on the build. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; this setting still applies to existing installations, but Windows 10 no longer receives ordinary free security updates or technical support through Windows Update. Microsoft’s Recycle Bin help page gives the support-end date.

Restore the Recycle Bin icon

  1. Open Settings > Personalization > Themes.
  2. Select Desktop icon settings.
  3. Check Recycle Bin.
  4. Select Apply or OK.

This is the same setting in reverse; Microsoft also lists it as the way to restore a missing Recycle Bin icon. See Microsoft’s recovery instructions.

If every desktop icon is missing

Windows has a separate control that hides or displays all desktop icons. Right-click an empty area of the desktop, select View, then enable Show desktop icons. If other icons return but Recycle Bin does not, open Desktop icon settings and check Recycle Bin. These are distinct controls: one affects all desktop icons, while the checkbox affects the individual built-in icon. Microsoft documents both checks.

Hiding the icon does not delete files

Clearing the checkbox only hides the desktop icon. It does not empty the Recycle Bin, permanently erase its contents, or change normal file deletion and recovery behavior. Do not choose Empty Recycle Bin unless you intend to remove its contents. The built-in Recycle Bin is a Windows shell item, not an ordinary shortcut that can be uninstalled like an app.

Open Recycle Bin without a desktop icon

Hide it from more places on a managed PC

For organization-managed devices, Microsoft documents a NoRecycleBinIcon policy. Unlike the normal desktop checkbox, this policy removes most occurrences of the icon, including from File Explorer, File Explorer-based programs, and the standard Open dialog. Microsoft lists it for Windows 10 version 2004 and later, specified Windows 10 releases, and Windows 11 version 21H2 and later; its supported editions include Pro, Enterprise, Education, and certain enterprise-oriented editions, not ordinary Home installations. A user must sign out and back in for a policy change to take effect. See Microsoft’s policy details.
