A remake is rebuilt much more extensively, with redesigned assets, mechanics, controls, structure or content. Rerelease is the broad category for making an older game available again, whether through a straightforward port, emulation, a collection, a remaster or a remake. A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is a specific upgrade format: it contains the original Switch game plus a title-specific upgrade pack, and it is not automatically a remake.
The four labels answer different questions
Nintendo game labels are useful starting points, but they do not provide a universal technical or legal test for every title. Nintendo does not publish a master glossary that establishes exactly how many assets or systems must change before a game becomes a remake. The reliable approach is to identify what was actually rebuilt, what was merely improved, and how the new edition is distributed.

| Edition type | What usually changes | Underlying game | Typical way to obtain it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remaster | Visual quality, frame rate, loading, resolution and selected systems | Usually the same core game | Separate digital or physical purchase |
| Remake | Assets, systems, controls, level structure or content may be redesigned | Partly preserved, but substantially rebuilt | Separate digital or physical purchase |
| Rerelease, port or collection | Availability on a new platform; changes vary from none to major technical adjustments | Often the same game, sometimes with platform-specific changes | eShop release, package, collection or subscription library |
| Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Title-specific improvements delivered in an upgrade pack | The original Switch game remains included | Bundle, upgrade pack or selected subscription benefit |
Think of “rerelease” as the umbrella and “remaster” and “remake” as descriptions of how much work was done to the game itself. A port can be a rerelease without being either a remaster or a remake. A collection can package several older games without changing them substantially. An emulated classic can reproduce the original software on newer hardware.
What a Nintendo remaster is
A remaster keeps the original game as its foundation and improves presentation or selected technical systems. The exact scope differs by title, so the word alone is not a promise of a complete redesign.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Common remaster changes
- Higher resolution textures, cleaner models or an HD presentation.
- More stable or higher frame rates.
- Shorter loading times.
- Modern display, audio or accessibility options.
- Reworked menus, controls or quality-of-life systems.
- Occasional bonus content, modes or downloadable material.
Nintendo’s store listing for The Wonderful 101: Remastered describes “improved visuals, framerate, and loading time.” That wording illustrates the normal remaster promise: the same recognizable game, presented and running better rather than rebuilt from the ground up. Nintendo’s LUMINES REMASTERED listing uses the phrase “An HD remaster of the original game,” another direct indication that the original remains the base experience.
What a remaster does not guarantee
A remaster does not necessarily add new levels, redesign every mechanic, replace the art direction or solve every problem in the original. Some remasters are modest technical updates; others include substantial quality-of-life work. Check the feature list, supported modes and video comparisons for the individual title instead of treating “remastered” as a fixed specification.
What makes a Nintendo remake
A remake is a substantially rebuilt version. Developers may recreate the art and environments, rewrite systems, change controls, restructure levels, add or remove content, or alter the way progression works. It can preserve the story and broad identity while delivering a materially different game.

Questions that reveal the rebuild’s scope
- Were the environments and character models recreated rather than simply rendered at a higher resolution?
- Are combat, movement, progression or user-interface systems redesigned?
- Were levels, puzzles, camera behavior or world layouts changed?
- Does the remake add missions, modes, accessibility features or narrative scenes?
- Can original saves, strategies or control habits be used without adjustment?
Because Nintendo has no universal threshold, describe those concrete changes. Calling a title a remake tells readers that the experience may differ substantially; it does not tell them exactly how. A remake can be faithful, adventurous or somewhere between those approaches, and the only dependable comparison is the documented feature set for that game.
Rerelease, port, collection and emulated classic
“Rerelease” means an older game has been made available again. It says little about the amount of modification. The same term can cover several formats.
Port
A port adapts a game to different hardware or an operating system. Developers may change resolution, controls, display ratios, save handling or performance to fit the new platform. A port can be nearly identical to the original or include technical upgrades, but it is not automatically a remaster.

Collection
A collection places multiple games in one product. The individual games may be emulated, ported or lightly enhanced. Review the collection’s contents, regional versions, bonus material and menu features; the word “collection” does not indicate that every game was remade.

Emulated classic
Emulation runs software designed for older hardware through an emulator on the newer system. The game itself may remain largely unchanged, although the service can provide save states, display options, rewind, manuals or other platform features.
Why the broad label matters
If a listing only says “rerelease,” ask what changed, how it is licensed, whether it is sold or subscription-based, and whether your existing hardware can play it. Those answers are more useful than the umbrella term by itself.
How Nintendo distributes older games
Nintendo identifies three main routes for classic software on newer platforms: Nintendo Classics libraries, individual Nintendo eShop releases and packaged collections. The route determines ownership, access and sometimes the available features.
Nintendo Classics through Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo Switch Online members receive access to included NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries. The Expansion Pack tier adds Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy and Nintendo GameCube libraries. The exact catalogue can vary by region and can change over time.
Nintendo’s support wording says members can play included games for as long as the applicable membership remains active. This is subscription access, not an individual purchase of every classic in the catalogue. If the membership expires, access to those included libraries stops until a qualifying membership is active again.

Individual eShop releases and packaged collections
A remaster, remake or standalone port is generally bought as an individual game, either digitally or in a physical package. Collections follow the same purchase model but contain several titles. The product page should state which version is included, whether additional downloads are required and which platform features are supported.
Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?
You need the required Nintendo Switch Online tier for games provided through Nintendo Classics or another membership-based library. You do not need Nintendo Switch Online merely because a remaster, remake or port runs on a Nintendo console and is sold as an individual game. Online multiplayer, cloud saves and other service features can have separate requirements, so check the specific title’s support information.
What a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition actually is
Nintendo defines a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition as “a bundle that includes the original Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack.” The upgrade pack is tied to a particular title and can add visual improvements, new features or additional game modes. Those enhancements work only on Nintendo Switch 2.

If you already own the Nintendo Switch version, you can purchase the upgrade pack through Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store or participating retailers, according to the title’s sales setup. Some upgrade packs may be included with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Inclusion is title-specific, so do not assume every Switch 2 Edition upgrade is covered by that membership.
If you buy a Switch 2 Edition bundle, the original Switch game remains part of the package. The format therefore differs from a remake: it is a platform-upgrade product that preserves the existing game and adds a defined set of Switch 2 enhancements.
What to check before paying for an upgrade
- Whether you already own the original Switch game in physical or digital form.
- The exact improvements in the upgrade pack: resolution, frame rate, features, modes or other changes.
- Whether the pack works only on Switch 2 and whether the original version remains playable on Switch.
- Whether your region, cartridge edition or account qualifies for the upgrade path.
- Whether Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack includes that particular pack or whether it must be purchased separately.
Game Trials are not rereleases you own
A Game Trial is a separate Nintendo Switch Online benefit. Nintendo defines it as “a free, downloadable full version of a game made available to Nintendo Switch Online members.” It is not the same as a demo and is not a permanent purchase.

A trial is playable only during the announced trial period and while the qualifying membership remains active. When either condition ends, the trial stops being playable unless you buy the game. Treat a Game Trial as temporary access to a complete game, not as another edition of the software.
How to decide between the original and a newer edition
The best choice depends on what you value, what hardware you own and how you want to access the game. Use this sequence before buying.
- List the actual changes. Separate visual and performance improvements from new content, redesigned systems and structural changes. A higher resolution alone points toward a remaster or port; rebuilt levels and mechanics suggest a remake.
- Check the access model. Determine whether the game is an individual purchase, part of a collection, included in Nintendo Classics or available only as a time-limited Game Trial.
- Confirm platform support. Verify whether the edition runs on original Switch, Switch 2 or both, and whether enhancements are restricted to Switch 2.
- Compare ownership and subscription access. A purchased game remains tied to your account or physical copy under the platform’s rules; a Nintendo Switch Online classic library requires an active qualifying membership.
- Check upgrade eligibility and cost. Existing owners may have an upgrade-pack route for a Switch 2 Edition. Do not buy the full bundle until you know whether your copy qualifies.
- Decide how much originality you want. Choose the original or a close port if preserving original behavior matters. Choose a remaster for improved presentation with familiar mechanics. Choose a remake if you want a rebuilt interpretation.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every new release is a remake
A new platform listing can be a port, collection or remaster. Read the change list and identify whether the underlying systems and content were rebuilt.
Assuming “remaster” means all problems are fixed
Remasters can improve frame rate and loading while retaining original design decisions. Look for specific statements about controls, interfaces, accessibility and online functionality.
Confusing a Switch 2 Edition with a new game
The Switch 2 Edition includes the original Switch game and an upgrade pack. It is not automatically a separate remake, and its improvements vary by title.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConfusing a Game Trial with a purchase
A trial is temporary, even though it contains the full downloadable game. Record the end date and membership requirement before relying on it for continued access.

Assuming all classic libraries are permanent purchases
Nintendo Classics access is linked to the applicable Nintendo Switch Online membership. If you want standalone ownership, look for an individual eShop release or physical collection instead.
A practical comparison checklist
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What changed? | Distinguishes presentation upgrades from a broad rebuild. |
| Is the same underlying game still present? | Shows whether strategies, levels and controls will feel familiar. |
| Is new content included? | Identifies added modes, missions, features or downloadable material. |
| How is it obtained? | Separates purchase, subscription library, collection and temporary trial access. |
| Which hardware supports the improvements? | Prevents paying for features unavailable on your console. |
| Do you already own a compatible version? | Determines whether an upgrade pack is available instead of a full-price bundle. |
| Can you still play the original? | Important for comparing controls, preservation and multiplayer compatibility. |
The short answer for each reader question
What is the difference between a remake, remaster and rerelease?
A remaster enhances an existing game, a remake substantially rebuilds it, and a rerelease is the broad act of making an older game available again. Ports, collections, emulated classics, remasters and remakes can all be rereleases.
Is a Switch 2 Edition a remake?
Not by default. It is a bundle containing the original Switch game and a title-specific Switch 2 upgrade pack. Only the documented scope of that pack tells you how extensive the changes are.
Recommended Free Tools
Do you need Nintendo Switch Online to play old Nintendo games?
You need the relevant membership tier for Nintendo Classics libraries and Game Trials. You do not need Nintendo Switch Online simply to play a separately purchased remaster, remake, port or collection.
Should you buy the remaster or the original?
Buy the remaster when its documented improvements address what you want—such as frame rate, loading, display quality or controls. Choose the original when preservation of the original presentation or behavior matters more, or when the newer edition adds little for your hardware and budget.
