To reload a Google Cloud Secret Manager value in a running Go service, the application must resolve the secret again and apply it. Storing a new secret version does not update an already-loaded Go value, and a Pub/Sub notification is only a signal to act—not a reload. mamori documents a GCP provider that can poll for changes or be wired to an on-demand load.
Understand what changes—and what does not
Secret Manager stores secret data as versions. Google’s Go example calls AccessSecretVersion for a version resource name; that version can be a numeric ID or an alias such as latest (Google Cloud: Access a secret version). A running process that has already read a value does not receive a replacement merely because another version is added.

Google’s event notifications are Pub/Sub messages describing resource changes. They do not carry a newly resolved secret value into your process, and calls to Get, List, or Access do not themselves publish change notifications (Google Cloud: Set up notifications on a secret). Your application needs a refresh path that reads the desired version and updates its own configuration.

Choose whether the reference follows latest or pins a version
mamori documents GCP references in this form: gcp-sm://<project>/<secret>[#json-key][?version=<v>]. If the version query is omitted, the provider defaults to latest; an explicit version selects a particular version (mamori GCP provider documentation).

| Reference policy | Operational effect | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
Omit version to follow latest |
A subsequent refresh can resolve the alias to the current latest version. The service still needs refresh logic and a safe point to apply the value. | A changing credential should be picked up through a managed rotation workflow. |
Set ?version=N |
The reference remains pinned until you change the configured version. This supports reproducible deployments and deliberate rollback, but adopting a new version requires an explicit promotion. | A configuration change should be reviewed and promoted on a controlled schedule. |
Google’s production guidance advises applications to specify a version ID rather than use latest (Google Cloud: Create and access a secret). That is a recommendation to weigh against your rotation design, not a substitute for one: a pinned reference gives control over adoption, while following latest makes the refresh path responsible for safe change handling.

Register the provider using the blank import shown in mamori’s documentation:
import _ "github.com/xavidop/mamori/providers/gcp". -
Give the service an Application Default Credentials (ADC) identity and grant it access only to the secrets it needs. Consult current Google Cloud IAM documentation for the precise permissions and role choices for your deployment; the mamori provider page identifies ADC but does not establish a least-privilege role mapping.

Refresh safely while the service is running
mamori documents polling for its Secret Manager watch behavior, using an interval and jitter. It also describes using Pub/Sub to trigger an on-demand load when the application wires that path (mamori GCP provider documentation). These are two ways to initiate a fresh lookup; neither makes configuration adoption safe automatically.

- 🔊 Visualize Distance – Visualize distance using UWB technology within Bluetooth range, allowing you to immediately see the distance
- Polling: the provider periodically checks for a change and can load the value again. The observed delay depends on the configured polling cadence and the application’s reload work; no fixed latency or performance figure is established by the documentation cited here.
- Pub/Sub-triggered load: a subscriber can use an event as a cue to request an on-demand load. The event is not the new secret itself, so the service must still resolve the configured reference.
For either route, treat refresh as a configuration transaction: load the candidate value, validate it, and only then replace the active configuration. If validation or a dependent connection fails, retain the working configuration or move to a defined failure state rather than partially applying the change. Ensure any component using the secret can observe the updated value; copying a new value into one struct will not update a client that captured the old credential during initialization.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use rotation notifications as workflow triggers
Secret Manager’s scheduled rotation sends a SECRET_ROTATE message to configured Pub/Sub topics at the scheduled time. Google describes this as a notification workflow: a subscriber must carry out the rotation action, which may include creating a new secret version and deploying changes (Google Cloud: Create rotation schedules in Secret Manager).

Have a subscriber respond to the rotation message by performing the system-specific rotation work, such as obtaining a new credential and creating a secret version.
-
After the new version is available, have the Go service refresh its reference—through polling or a Pub/Sub-triggered load—and validate it before adoption.
-
Confirm that the downstream system accepts the new credential before retiring the old one, according to that system’s rotation procedure.

The scheduled message does not create or deploy a replacement credential on its own, and it does not mutate application state. The subscriber and service refresh path are separate pieces of the rotation design.
Decide how the service should adopt a valid change
Automatically using each valid value can suit credentials whose lifecycle is managed continuously, but it makes the service’s refresh and validation behavior part of the availability design. Deliberate promotion suits configuration that must be reproducible or reviewed: publish a new version, update the pinned version reference through the normal deployment process, and retain the ability to roll back by restoring the prior reference. These are operational trade-offs, not measured performance claims.
