Rehearse the Conversations You Dread: What Building an AI Practice Simulator Taught Me

An AI practice simulator lets you rehearse a hard conversation out loud, then review where you stalled. Here is how the loop works, what the cosskill builder learned, and what the evidence does not show.

An AI practice simulator lets you rehearse a difficult conversation by speaking it aloud with an AI counterpart that can push back, interrupt, or change its tone, then reviewing where you stalled. The clearest account of how one of these tools was built and what its creator took from it is a first-person post by Neo Xia on DEV Community, dated September 30 (the listing shows no year). The tool is cosskill. The lessons below are the builder’s own observations from using it. They are not measured results, and the post does not present data showing that the practice improves real-world outcomes.

How a practice session runs

The builder describes a three-step loop. The steps are simple, but the order matters, because the review only means something after you have actually spoken the conversation.

  1. Choose a scenario. Pick the specific conversation you are dreading and state what you want to come out of it. A vague goal such as “handle my boss” gives the AI little to work with; “ask for a 10 percent raise without apologising for asking” gives both sides a target.
  2. Speak with the AI counterpart. You talk through the exchange out loud. The counterpart responds in character and can push back on your reasoning or shift its tone, so your first sentence rarely ends the conversation.
  3. Review what worked and where you got stuck. The session ends with a reflection on the exchange. The useful part is the specific moment you hesitated, lost the thread, or started defending yourself, and what you would say at that point next time.

The situations the builder had in mind

The post names four kinds of conversation that people commonly put off:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Asking for a raise
  • Delivering hard feedback to someone who reports to you or works beside you
  • Saying no to a boss
  • Difficult personal conversations

Each scenario has a different failure mode. A salary request tends to stall on the first counter-offer. Feedback tends to collapse into apology. Saying no to a manager tends to end with a vague promise to “look into it.” A rehearsal is most useful when you already know which of these you are likely to do.

What the builder learned

The post offers three lessons. Each one describes what the author noticed while building and testing the tool, which is a narrower claim than a controlled study.

Rehearsal beat reading about negotiation

The author’s experience was that reading about negotiation did not prepare them for the other person’s unexpected response nearly as well as practising a counter-move did. The point is less about the content of the advice than about having a response ready when the conversation goes off script. Quoted directly: “Rehearsal beats research.”

The second attempt is where the skill shows up

The author says the first run through a scenario usually feels rough, and that replaying the same scenario changed the rhythm of the conversation. A longer version of the observation: “The first run through a scenario is rough. By the third replay the rhythm changes — you stop defending and start steering.” The phrase “the second attempt is where the skill is” is the post’s shorthand for the same idea.

Practical implication: plan for at least two runs of the same scenario. The first run is often for finding your weak spot. The later runs are for testing a fix.

Saying it out loud is a different exercise

The author argues that speaking to a counterpart that interrupts and pushes back exercises a different skill from drafting an argument in text. Writing gives you time to polish each sentence. Speech forces you to recover in real time when the other person cuts in. The post’s phrasing is “Saying it out loud matters.”

What the evidence does and does not show

The post is an experience report from the person who built the product. It does not compare cosskill with other simulators, it does not measure how often people improve after using it, and it does not cite a study of AI role-play and communication outcomes. Treat its lessons as a reasonable hypothesis about practice, which you can test on your own conversations, rather than as proof that the tool works.

The same caution applies to general claims about AI role-play. Rehearsing a hard conversation is an established way to prepare, but whether a particular AI counterpart is realistic enough to help you is something you have to judge from your own sessions.

Trying cosskill

According to the post, cosskill can be tried for free with limited use before you sign in, and a Pro plan offers unlimited use. Plans and limits can change, so check the current terms on the cosskill site before relying on them. The post does not describe any affiliate or referral arrangement.

If you try it, start with the scenario you are least comfortable with, run it at least twice, and write down the one moment in each run where you lost control of the conversation. That moment is the thing to rehearse next.

The builder’s central point is simple. Reading advice about a hard conversation tells you what to say; speaking it aloud, hearing the other person push back, and trying again shows you whether you can actually say it.
