That claim is the FT’s, not an established fact here. We could not locate the FT article, so its named investors, financing vehicle, timing, and whether $100 billion is a target or a committed amount are not known. What SoftBank has confirmed in 2026 is a separate $30 billion follow-on investment in OpenAI, completed on October 1, 2026. None of the SoftBank disclosures reviewed establish Gulf investor participation in any current AI fundraising.

The OpenAI follow-on SoftBank has completed
SoftBank’s February 2026 announcement set out a $30.0 billion follow-on investment in OpenAI, paid in tranches on a schedule that ends in October 2026. On October 1, 2026, SoftBank executed the final $10.0 billion tranche through SoftBank Vision Fund 2 and said this completed the announced $30.0 billion commitment.

After that tranche, SoftBank reported cumulative investment in OpenAI of $64.6 billion and ownership of approximately 13%. These figures describe SoftBank’s existing position in one company. They do not show whether SoftBank is raising additional capital from outside investors, and they should not be read as evidence of a $100 billion effort.

In its 2026 follow-on announcement, Chairman and CEO Masayoshi Son said: “AI is transforming the world at an unprecedented pace.” That is a statement about the company’s general AI outlook. It is not a comment on the reported Gulf fundraising, and no verified named quote about the $100 billion report has been published in the sources available here.
How SoftBank says it finances AI investment
SoftBank’s 2026 CFO message lists the financing options it uses or may use for investment and AI infrastructure. They are:
Rank #2
- Asset sales
- Asset-backed financing
- Hybrid financing
- Loan facilities
- Bond issuance
- Nonrecourse project finance for AI infrastructure
This list shows the range of tools SoftBank discusses publicly. It does not name an investor, a vehicle, or a size for any Gulf-backed raise, so it cannot confirm the FT’s reported effort.
The Gulf link: what the 2016 Vision Fund context does and does not show
SoftBank has a documented history with Gulf sovereign capital. In October 2016, the company said Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund would consider investing up to $45 billion in the proposed Vision Fund under a non-binding memorandum of understanding. In the same announcement, the fund’s potential overall size was put at up to $100 billion.
Rank #3
Two points limit how far that history can be pushed. The 2016 arrangement was non-binding and described a possible investment, not a commitment. It also belongs to a different fundraising effort more than nine years before the current report. The matching $100 billion figure is notable, but the sources available here do not show whether the FT’s number is connected to the 2016 fund size. Treat the historical ties as context for SoftBank’s relationship with Gulf capital, not as proof of current participation.
Industry context: AI venture funding in 2025
SoftBank cites a figure of $211 billion in global AI venture funding in 2025, up 85% from the prior year, attributed to Crunchbase and dated January 2026. The original Crunchbase report has not been checked directly, so the figure should be treated as a secondhand attribution. It describes the wider market, not any single company’s fundraising.

What would confirm or change the picture
Until the FT report’s terms are public, the headline’s wording alone does not show whether $100 billion is a goal or money already committed. If the details emerge, these are the points that separate a reported target from an actual raise:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- The amount sought compared with any amount already committed
- The named investors and where they are based
- The financing vehicle, such as a fund, a bond, or a loan facility
- The intended use of the proceeds, including whether it covers OpenAI or other AI infrastructure
- The timing of any closes or tranches
Until those points are reported, the verified facts are limited to SoftBank’s completed $30 billion OpenAI follow-on, its disclosed financing tools, and its 2016 Gulf history.
