Netflix is competing with regional and global streamers across Asia, and live sports is one of the tools they are using. The “$6 billion Asia sports arena” figure, however, does not trace to a single verified measurement of the region’s sports market. The dollar figures circulating in coverage of this topic describe different things: one cricket league’s media-rights value, a premium video advertising forecast, a proposed combined company’s revenue, and a broader sports-economy estimate. None of them shows that total Asian sports rights or sports streaming is worth $6 billion. What the evidence does support is a country-by-country picture of who holds which live rights, and that is what viewers and industry readers can use.
What the $6 billion number actually measures
Each figure below is accurate in its own context, but none of them measures the same thing. When you see “$6 billion” attached to Asian sports, the first question to ask is which of these it refers to.

| Figure | What it measures | Source and date | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Approximately $6 billion | Media-rights value for one five-year Indian Premier League cycle | The Economic Times cricket-economy coverage, 2025 | One league’s historical rights figure, not a regional market total |
| More than $6 billion by 2028 | Forecast for Asia-Pacific premium video-on-demand advertising | Media Partners Asia report catalog forecast | Advertising revenue, not sports rights |
| $6.6 billion in annual recurring revenue | Combined annual recurring revenue of a proposed Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery combination, as estimated for Asia-Pacific | Media Partners Asia, as reported by Variety, December 8, 2025 | A proposed entertainment business, not the size of any sports market |
| $16.2 billion in 2026 | Asia-Pacific commercial sports economy, with rights-fee growth slowing to 1%–2% a year | Media Partners Asia report, as summarized by Yahoo Sports in 2026 | Secondary summary with a broader scope than rights fees or streaming revenue; not verified against the full report |
Netflix’s position in the region
S&P Global Market Intelligence estimated in a January 13, 2026 analysis that Netflix contributed roughly 17% to 18% of total subscription-streaming revenue across major Asia-Pacific markets. That estimate excludes mainland China and measures subscription revenue, not spending on sports rights. S&P Global also says Netflix’s growth has moderated in some key markets, which is one reason major competitors are pushing live sports and ad-supported subscription tiers. Its country examples cover South Korea, Japan, India, and Singapore only, so they should not be read as a description of every Asian market.
Live sports rights are set market by market
Rights in this region are local and event-specific. The table lists the examples named in S&P Global’s January 2026 analysis, plus the Premier League launch reported by the Associated Press on February 26, 2026. Services and rights change, so confirm the current position in your country before acting on any row.

| Market | Sport or event | Rights holder or service | Access model | Status as reported |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| South Korea | KBO baseball | TVING, exclusive carriage | Ad-supported subscriptions | Described as exclusive in January 2026; current terms not stated |
| Japan | MLB-related content | Prime Video, expanding its MLB-related offering | Not stated | Described in January 2026; current coverage not confirmed |
| Japan | 2026 World Baseball Classic | Netflix, exclusive rights | Not stated | Tournament held in March 2026; the rights description comes from the January 2026 analysis |
| India | Cricket competitions | Netflix did not hold the must-watch cricket rights described in the analysis | Not applicable | Netflix India produced cricket documentaries instead |
| India | WWE programming | Netflix, exclusive streaming rights with Hindi commentary | Not stated | Described in January 2026; this is wrestling, not cricket |
| Singapore | Premier League matches | Premier League Plus, a league-run direct service | Direct-to-customer subscription | Planned for the next season as of February 2026; launch status not confirmed here |
The pattern is that Netflix’s sports-related steps in these markets are selected rights and documentary or non-live content, not a regional live-sports package. Rival services hold live rights in specific countries, and some of them rely on advertising to offset subscription costs.
The Premier League’s direct model in Singapore
The Associated Press reported that the Premier League planned to launch its own streaming service in Singapore. Chief executive Richard Masters framed the move as a business-building exercise and a learning project, not a guaranteed template for other markets:

The second quotation describes an intention to learn from the Singapore launch. Masters did not say the service would expand to other markets. For viewers, the practical difference is that a league-run service takes on the marketing, pricing and subscriber retention that a broadcaster or streamer would otherwise handle, which makes it a direct competitor to established streamers in that market.

There is no single Asia-wide answer, because rights are assigned country by country and event by event. Work through these steps:

- Identify the exact competition and season, such as KBO baseball, MLB-related content, the 2026 World Baseball Classic, or the Premier League.
- Check the rights holder’s official website or app-store listing for your country. Availability in one market does not carry over to another.

- Check the date of any information you find. The sources behind this article are dated between December 2025 and February 2026, and rights can change within a single season.
What is not established
- There is no evidence of a universal Asian sports subscription that covers all markets or competitions.
- There is no evidence that Netflix holds a comprehensive live-sports package across Asia. Its reported moves are market-specific.
- Mainland China is not covered by the Netflix market-share estimate, so nothing here describes that market.
- The current status of the Singapore Premier League service, and whether it has launched as planned, is not confirmed by the sources cited here.
