If you already use Playwright, its screenshot assertions are a natural starting point; if you want configurable, self-hosted scenarios, consider BackstopJS; if your component states live in Storybook and you want a managed review workflow, consider Chromatic. Keep reg-suit in the running if you already have a capture pipeline and want a diff report over images you supply.
What reg-suit does—and what it leaves to your team
Reg-suit is a command-line tool that compares current images with earlier snapshots and creates an HTML differences report. Its documentation gives Amazon S3 and Google Cloud Storage as examples of external storage for snapshots. It can run locally or in CI, detect the parent commit as the expected comparison for a GitHub-flow topic branch, and post results to a pull request through its GitHub app. The key distinction is that reg-suit expects your project to provide the screenshots and configure the surrounding capture and storage workflow. That makes “alternative” a workflow question, not simply a search for another diff algorithm. A replacement might capture screenshots inside your existing browser tests, run scripted scenarios you maintain, or provide cloud rendering and a collaborative review interface.

- Carefully designed questions: Ensuring a solid understanding of concepts
- Engaging activities: Offering a mix of enjoyable exercises
- Problem-solving techniques: Providing strategies for tackling challenges
- Vibrant, full-color visuals: Enhancing learning with captivating illustrations
How to choose: six questions that expose the real trade-offs
- Where should rendering happen? Capturing in the browser environment your CI already runs can fit an existing test suite. A hosted service may instead render in its own cloud browsers. Decide whether you need to control that environment or prefer a managed one.
- How will you describe coverage? Existing Playwright tests can assert screenshots directly. Storybook stories can represent component states for Chromatic. BackstopJS uses scenario configuration. Reg-suit compares images produced elsewhere.
- Who owns the baselines? Playwright’s references are commonly kept with the project in version control. Reg-suit uses external cloud storage such as S3 or Google Cloud Storage. A hosted service may manage references for you; confirm the exact behavior in its current docs.
- Can you make rendering repeatable? Pin the browser and operating-system environment where possible, and control fonts, viewport and dynamic page state. Playwright cautions: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” Playwright: Visual comparisons.
- What review experience does the team need? An HTML report or CI artifact may be enough when Git review is already the norm. A pull-request integration or collaborative visual review can be valuable when reviewers need to inspect and approve image changes together.
- What work and cost are you taking on? Compare CI setup, storage, browser maintenance and team time with any vendor’s current pricing and usage rules. What to expect from each main alternative
Playwright: visual assertions where your tests already run
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() compares a captured screenshot with a reference. On its first execution it creates the reference image; later executions compare against it. Snapshot names can include browser and platform identifiers, and the documented update command is --update-snapshots. This suits teams that want image assertions in the same test runner and are comfortable reviewing and committing baseline changes. Keep baseline generation and comparison on a consistent environment: OS, browser version, settings, hardware and other conditions can affect pixels. Playwright visual comparison documentation.
BackstopJS: configurable scenarios under your control
BackstopJS lets a team define scenarios and viewport configurations, script interactions, and use either Puppeteer or Playwright. Its Docker mode is intended to reduce differences between rendering environments. It is a fit when you want explicit control over capture and are prepared to maintain scenario definitions, reference images, CI integration and the reporting workflow. BackstopJS repository.

Chromatic: managed visual review for Storybook states
Chromatic builds on Storybook and documents cloud-browser rendering. Storybook stories can capture component states and variations as visual test cases; Chromatic also documents integrations with Vitest, Playwright and Cypress tests. This can reduce the need to assemble a review workflow yourself, but check that its cloud rendering model and current usage-based pricing suit your team. Chromatic documentation.
Other hosted products: validate the fit directly
Argos, Percy and Applitools are candidates to investigate if you want a hosted review or rendering workflow. A July 2026 comparison from Argos groups hosted services separately from local tools such as Playwright and BackstopJS, and characterizes reg-suit as a bring-your-own-images toolkit. Treat those descriptions as vendor-authored starting points: verify capture behavior, review features, openness and pricing in the provider’s own current documentation. Argos comparison.

Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first when you need website screenshots for a visual-regression pipeline, rather than another diff engine: one GET request captures a URL, while the service accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
Example cURL call (replace the URL as needed; get an API key first):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and output options. ScreenshotNeo returns the capture; use your chosen test runner or diff workflow to compare images and review changes. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card required.

Common problems and practical fixes
Differences appear even when the page seems unchanged
Check whether the baseline and current capture used different operating systems, browser versions, fonts, viewport sizes, headless settings or hardware. Also look for changing timestamps, rotating content, animations and network-loaded data. Align the environment and stabilize page state before accepting a baseline update.
A baseline update creates noisy or unexplained changes
For Playwright, update snapshots deliberately with --update-snapshots only after reviewing the rendered result. Confirm that the update ran under the environment intended to own the baseline; otherwise the new reference may encode a machine-specific rendering difference.
Best Value
Reg-suit has no images to compare
Reg-suit compares images your project supplies. Check that the capture step ran, output paths and storage configuration point to the expected files, and the relevant snapshot is available before the comparison step starts.
BackstopJS results differ between local and CI
Compare browser engine, viewport, fonts, dependencies and scripted state between environments. BackstopJS documents Docker mode as a way to reduce cross-environment rendering differences; it does not remove the need to keep inputs and scenarios consistent.

A hosted product’s price or feature list does not match an old comparison
Vendor capabilities and pricing change. Treat third-party comparison pages as discovery aids and confirm current terms, browser coverage, limits and review features on the vendor’s official pages before committing.
A practical decision
- Choose Playwright if you already run Playwright tests and want screenshot assertions with version-controlled references.
- Choose BackstopJS if you want scenario-based, self-hosted capture control and will maintain the surrounding workflow.
- Choose Chromatic if your component states live in Storybook and managed cloud rendering and review fit your needs.
- Keep reg-suit if you already produce screenshots and want its image comparison report, external snapshot storage and pull-request integration.
- Use ScreenshotNeo as a capture service when clean website screenshots are the missing input to your pipeline; it is not presented here as a visual diff or baseline-review replacement.
