Then ask for a written quote that spells out the files, revision stages, schedule, payment terms, credit, and usage rights. “Stream use” does not automatically include merchandise or every kind of monetized promotion.
Decide what to commission
Make a short asset list before requesting a quote. A commission might cover emotes, badges, an overlay, a logo, an avatar, or a character illustration; each has different production needs and deliverables. Identify the platform or platforms where each asset will appear, such as Twitch or YouTube, and whether it will also be used on social media or elsewhere.

Set a budget range and a deadline, and decide whether you want the artist to interpret a broad idea or follow a detailed design. Note the channel’s audience and visual identity, desired colors and text, variants you need, and anything that must or must not appear. Find an artist whose work fits
Look at finished work in a context and at a scale similar to your intended use. For example, an emote needs to remain legible when displayed small; an overlay needs to work with your scene layout. Ask whether commissions are open and whether the artist takes on the kind of project you have in mind.

You can contact artists directly or look through marketplaces. Their processes, fees, protections, and dispute handling differ, so check the current terms of the specific artist or service rather than assuming one route works the same as another. A portfolio shows style and past work; it does not by itself establish availability, a delivery date, or what rights are included.
Send a useful brief and request a scoped quote
Share reference images and explain what you like about each—such as its palette, linework, mood, or composition—rather than asking an artist to copy another creator’s work. Include your platform requirements, the number of assets and variants, any required text, and the planned uses. Confirm exact dimensions and file types with the artist; requirements and deliverables vary by asset and provider.
Ask the artist to confirm the following in writing before you pay:

- How many assets and variants are included, and their dimensions and file formats.
- Whether editable or source files are included, or only final exports.
- The work stages, when you can review drafts, and how approval works.
- How many revisions are included at each stage, what counts as a revision, and the charge for additional work or a new concept.
- The expected schedule, queue position, and whether any priority option changes the timing.
- The total price, payment schedule, any add-ons, and applicable payment fees.
- Cancellation and refund terms, plus whether work-in-progress or final art may be shown publicly.
Artist listings illustrate why these details should be confirmed rather than assumed. One published offer specifies emote PNG sizes and overlay deliverables; another describes sketch approval, limited minor revisions after approval, upfront payment, and an optional split for larger commissions. Those are individual artists’ terms, not industry-wide standards. The listings also show provider-specific prices, including one artist’s $60-per-emote and $200 overlay/thumbnail-art examples and another’s €70 animated-emote and vector-logo pricing from €200. Agree on usage rights before work starts
Describe each planned use explicitly and get the artist’s answer in the agreement. Ask separately about streaming on Twitch or YouTube, monetized channel content, social promotion, merchandise, print sales, and future adaptations. “Commercial rights” and “stream use” can mean different things in different artists’ terms. One listing permits specified platform uses but treats merchandise as requiring a separate license; another describes included platform use and separate commercial fees for other uses. These are examples, not universal rules. Review the actual terms and ask what additional permission or payment would be needed if your use expands: artist license example.
Also agree whether you may crop, resize, animate, recolor, or otherwise modify the art, and whether the artist can show drafts or finished work in a portfolio. Set out how you will credit the artist and where that credit should appear. If a use is important to your channel, do not rely on an ambiguous phrase; name the platform, context, and type of monetization.

Review the work and archive the final files
Use the agreed review stages and send consolidated, specific feedback at each one. Separate corrections to the approved brief from requests that add a new concept, asset, or variant; the latter may fall outside the quote. Before marking the job complete, check that the delivered files match the agreed formats, dimensions, and asset count.

Credit custom art on Twitch
Twitch documents emote attribution controls and a channel-specific Artist Badge for up to five contributors.
