RedReader was the Reddit alternative that Android Police author Marvin Velasco chose to keep. Its draw for him was a flexible reading interface without ads or a subscription; its drawbacks were missing NSFW browsing and fewer recommendations for discovering communities. That is one Android user’s preference, not a universal ranking.
Which Reddit alternatives did the author try?
In an article published September 12, 2026, Velasco named Relay for Reddit, Infinity for Reddit, and Now for Reddit as the alternatives he tried before settling on RedReader. The article describes the three as attractive and customizable, but says each required a subscription at some point. Those are the author’s findings at publication, not confirmation of their current prices or terms. The accessible article text names three alternatives despite its title’s reference to four; it does not identify a fourth, so there is no basis to add one.

Velasco’s starting point was dissatisfaction with Reddit’s official app, which he characterized as increasingly bloated, with more promoted posts and distracting recommendations. That is his assessment, not an independently measured change to the app.
Why did RedReader suit him?
Velasco valued RedReader’s combination of ad-free, subscription-free browsing and interface controls. He adjusted themes, font sizes, layout, thumbnails, and media display until the app felt more readable to him. He also found that its front page followed the selected sort—such as Hot, Rising, or Best—rather than the recommendation-led experience he associated with Reddit’s official app. This describes his experience, not an audit of either app’s feed algorithms.

For video, the article says RedReader can use its internal player or an external player. It does not establish that every video behaves identically or that any particular external player is required.
What trade-offs came with switching?
- No NSFW subreddit browsing: Velasco says RedReader did not support browsing NSFW subreddits. He suggested using Reddit.com in a browser when that access was needed.
- Less guided discovery: He missed the official app’s recommendations and help finding subreddits. A feed that follows a chosen sort may suit readers who know what they want to follow, but it offers less of the discovery experience he missed.
- Setup takes patience: The available controls helped him tune the interface, but he reports that getting it to his liking took time.
How meaningful is the storage comparison?
Velasco reported that RedReader used about one tenth of the official app’s storage in his comparison after he cleared both apps’ caches. The figure is a single-author, device- and app-specific comparison from 2026, not a general benchmark or a guarantee for another phone, usage pattern, or app version.

How certain is continued access to third-party apps?
Reddit’s official app download page directs users to the App Store or Google Play. Community discussion has described earlier third-party client shutdowns after API changes, but that does not establish the future status of RedReader or the other named apps. Check an app’s current availability and terms before relying on it.

Who is RedReader a good fit for?
- Consider it if you want a customizable, ad-free Reddit reading experience without a subscription, as described by Velasco.
- Look elsewhere or keep a browser option if NSFW subreddit browsing or recommendation-led discovery is central to how you use Reddit.
- Allow time to configure the interface, and treat the author’s storage comparison as a personal result rather than a promise.
