There is no official Red Dead Redemption 2 dedicated-server RAM or CPU specification. Rockstar publishes hardware requirements for the Windows game client: 8 GB of RAM and an Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300 at minimum, or 12 GB of RAM and an Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X at the recommended level. Those figures describe the computer running the game, not a server you can rent or operate.
To avoid buying the wrong hardware, separate three different needs: playing the PC version, connecting reliably to Red Dead Online, and running an RP experience through Rockstar’s Creator Platform. Rockstar documents all three areas, but it does not turn the client requirements into a dedicated hosting recipe.

What “server requirements” means for Red Dead Redemption 2
Searches for server requirements usually combine several different questions. The answer changes depending on which one you mean:
- What PC do I need to play? Rockstar’s published minimum and recommended specifications answer this.
- What internet connection and ports do I need? Rockstar’s Red Dead Online troubleshooting guidance gives speed targets and UDP ports.
- What hardware do I need to host a dedicated world? The official material reviewed does not publish RAM, CPU, player-capacity, operating-system, or bandwidth specifications for a standard dedicated RDR2 server.
Keeping those categories separate matters. A 12 GB client recommendation is not a promise that 12 GB is enough to host players, and a 7.5 Mbps download target is not a server-bandwidth guarantee. Rockstar’s support pages describe different functions under different conditions.

Official PC hardware requirements
Rockstar Games Customer Support’s “Red Dead Redemption 2 PC system requirements” page, updated April 30, 2024, lists the following requirements. The page says downloadable content and programming changes can affect requirements over time.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300 | Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 12 GB RAM |
| Graphics | Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 with 2 GB or AMD Radeon R9 280 with 3 GB | Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 GB or AMD Radeon RX 480 with 4 GB |
| Storage | 150 GB | 150 GB |
These are client requirements. They describe the computer rendering and running the Windows game. They do not define a headless server build, a maximum player count, or a hosting plan.
Minimum versus recommended memory
Eight gigabytes is Rockstar’s minimum listed system memory. That is the threshold for the PC game specification, not a sensible figure to reserve for a hypothetical host process. Twelve gigabytes is the recommended client figure. If you are purchasing a modern PC for the game, additional memory may help the operating system and background applications, but Rockstar’s published table itself stops at 12 GB for the recommended tier.
Processor requirements
The minimum processor choices are the Intel Core i5-2500K and AMD FX-6300. The recommended choices are the Intel Core i7-4770K and AMD Ryzen 5 1500X. These model names are useful when checking an older desktop, but they should not be interpreted as a dedicated-server CPU benchmark. Rockstar does not state how many hosted sessions, players, scripts, or RP resources any processor can support.

Graphics and storage still apply to the player PC
The graphics requirement is especially clear evidence that this table is for the client: Rockstar specifies a GTX 770 or Radeon R9 280 at minimum and a GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 480 at the recommended level. A dedicated service process would not normally be described with a rendering-card requirement in this way. The 150 GB storage figure applies to the game installation in both tiers. Leave room for updates and other files rather than treating 150 GB as a universal server-disk allowance.
Online prerequisites and what they do not prove
Rockstar’s PC requirements page states that online play requires an internet connection and a Rockstar Games account. Those are access prerequisites for the player. They do not establish that a player can launch a conventional dedicated server from the same installation.
Valve’s Steam listing independently presents Red Dead Redemption 2 as a PC product and also reports 8 GB of RAM in its requirements. Use that listing for product and retail context; Rockstar’s support page remains the primary source for the complete operating-system, processor, memory, graphics, and storage table.

Not in the Rockstar support material covered here. No official RAM-per-player formula, CPU tier, supported server operating system, database requirement, network capacity, tick rate, or maximum-player specification is provided for a standard Red Dead Redemption 2 dedicated server.

- Printed on Highest Quality Poster Paper.
- Poster measures 16" x 24" inches
That means it would be misleading to take the 8 GB minimum or 12 GB recommended client figure and advertise it as a hosting requirement. It is equally unsupported to promise that a particular rented virtual machine will run an RDR2 world, or to calculate capacity by dividing a server’s memory by the client requirement.
Why a private session is not dedicated hosting
Rockstar documents an Invite Only Session as a way to create a private online session from the game. The feature controls who joins a session; it does not give you a server binary, an administrator console, a published hardware profile, or independent control of the service infrastructure.
What Rockstar says about RP servers
Rockstar’s “Policies and guidelines regarding Roleplay (RP) Servers,” updated September 15, 2026, says: “Rockstar Games allows RP Servers through our Creator Platform, provided they follow our policies and guidelines at the links below.” The policy points to Rockstar’s Terms of Service, Creator Platform License Agreement, and Mod Guidelines.
This establishes policy permission for qualifying RP servers through the Creator Platform. It does not publish RAM or CPU requirements, confirm that ordinary players can rent a third-party dedicated machine, or define performance targets. Before building an RP project, read the current policy documents and verify what the Creator Platform actually provides for your intended use.

How to start an Invite Only Session
If your goal is to play privately with selected friends rather than operate a dedicated server, use Rockstar’s documented session feature. The help page was updated May 26, 2026.
- Launch Red Dead Redemption 2 and enter Story Mode.
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Select Online.
- Choose Find New Session.
- Select Invite Only Session.
This is the appropriate built-in option when you want a private session. It should not be described as self-hosted dedicated-server software, because Rockstar’s instructions do not provide that capability or a host specification.
Network requirements for Red Dead Online on PC
Rockstar’s “Red Dead Online PC Connection Troubleshooting” page, updated July 1, 2025, gives connection targets for troubleshooting. They are guidance for connecting the game, not universal requirements for hosting.

|---|---|---|
| Download speed | 7.5 Mbps | A troubleshooting target for the PC connection |
| Upload speed | 1 Mbps recommended | Preferred troubleshooting target, not a server-capacity formula |
| Upload speed | 0.5 Mbps minimum | Minimum troubleshooting target stated by Rockstar |
| UDP ports | 6672, 61455, 61456, 61457, 61458 | Ports Rockstar identifies for connection troubleshooting |
| Connection medium | Try wired connectivity when wireless problems persist | A diagnostic step, not a guarantee of a fix |
The separate “Red Dead Online Error Code 0x10001023” page, updated September 18, 2025, repeats the same UDP port list. A port reference tells you what traffic Rockstar wants checked; it does not tell you to expose a new public game server or prove that forwarding those ports will solve every error.
Practical connection checklist
- Run a current speed test on the same connection used by the gaming PC. Compare the result with 7.5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps recommended upload, and 0.5 Mbps minimum upload.
- If wireless play is unstable, test with a wired Ethernet connection, as Rockstar recommends. This helps isolate local Wi-Fi interference from service-side or account problems.
- Check the router, firewall, or security software for blocking of UDP port 6672 and UDP ports 61455 through 61458. Router interfaces differ, so use the labels supplied by your equipment rather than assuming one universal menu path.
- Retest after changing one setting at a time. If the issue remains, do not infer that the PC is underpowered: network errors and hardware limitations are separate problems.
Choosing the right answer for your situation
You only want to play on PC
Use the client table. Check for Windows 10 64-bit, at least 8 GB of RAM, one of the listed minimum processors, a supported graphics card, and 150 GB of storage. The recommended tier—12 GB of RAM, a Core i7-4770K or Ryzen 5 1500X, and a GTX 1060 or RX 480—gives you Rockstar’s preferred baseline, but it is still not a server specification.
You want a private group session
Use the Invite Only Session path from Story Mode. Focus on account access and connection troubleshooting rather than shopping for a “server” with a specific RAM amount.
You want to create an RP server
Start with the Creator Platform policy and its linked legal and modification rules. Treat hardware and hosting details as an implementation question that must be answered by the platform documentation for your approved setup. Do not claim that the regular PC requirements certify a third-party host.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou are comparing hosting offers
Be cautious if a listing presents 8 GB or 12 GB as an “official RDR2 server requirement.” Rockstar has not published those numbers for dedicated hosting. Ask the provider what software is actually being offered, whether it is authorized, which platform it supports, how player capacity is measured, and what happens when the platform or policy changes. Without an official specification, no honest comparison can promise performance from RAM and CPU labels alone.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Mistake: Calling the client minimum a server minimum. Fix: label 8 GB RAM and the i5-2500K/FX-6300 as PC-game requirements.
- Mistake: Treating recommended client hardware as a hosting tier. Fix: state that 12 GB and the recommended CPUs are for running the game client.
- Mistake: Confusing Invite Only with dedicated hosting. Fix: describe it as a private session reached through the in-game Online menu.
- Mistake: Treating connection speeds as server bandwidth. Fix: identify 7.5 Mbps download and the upload figures as Rockstar troubleshooting targets for Red Dead Online on PC.
- Mistake: Assuming port forwarding guarantees a solution. Fix: check the listed UDP ports only as part of troubleshooting, and remember that wireless, router, account, and service problems can have different causes.
- Mistake: Assuming RP policy supplies technical specifications. Fix: read the Creator Platform terms and guidelines separately; the September 15, 2026 policy statement permits compliant RP servers but does not specify hardware.
Bottom line
For playing Red Dead Redemption 2 on Windows, plan around Rockstar’s 8 GB minimum or 12 GB recommended RAM, the corresponding listed processors, the stated graphics cards, Windows 10 64-bit, and 150 GB of storage. For online connection problems, use Rockstar’s 7.5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps recommended upload, 0.5 Mbps minimum upload, UDP port list, and wired-connection advice as troubleshooting guidance. For hosting, there is no official dedicated-server RAM or CPU recipe in these sources; an Invite Only Session is private play, while RP servers are governed through the Creator Platform and its policies.
