If recovery mode asks for a password, first identify what you’re using: an Android phone, an iPhone or iPad, or a Windows PC. The prompt may be for a screen lock, a Google or Apple Account, Windows sign-in, or a BitLocker recovery key. A factory reset is not a universal password bypass: it can erase local data and may still require the account previously associated with the device.
Before a factory reset: identify the prompt and protect your data
Write down the exact wording on the screen and note the device model and operating system if you know them. A recovery-mode screen lock and an account-activation check are different protections; a Windows recovery key is different again. The right next step depends on which prompt you see.

- Check for a backup. A factory reset can permanently remove data stored only on the device. Google recommends trying other fixes first when resetting an Android device to solve a problem and warns that the reset erases its data. Google’s Android factory-reset guidance explains what may be restored from a Google Account and what is removed.
- Verify the account credentials before wiping. For Android, confirm the username and password for a Google Account previously used on the phone. For Apple’s on-device forgotten-passcode reset, you need the Apple Account password. These credentials may still be needed during setup or activation after erasing.
- Try a less disruptive fix when the device is frozen. If an Android device freezes or will not respond, follow Google’s troubleshooting steps before choosing a reset.
- Check what recovery will require. Depending on the device and route, you may need internet access, a computer and cable, the manufacturer’s instructions, or a BitLocker recovery key.
Android recovery mode: use the previously associated Google Account
Android recovery menus and their button combinations vary by manufacturer and model. Google directs users to the manufacturer for hardware-button reset instructions; there is no single combination that applies to every Android phone. Consult Google’s current reset instructions and the device maker’s guidance for your exact model.
Before resetting an Android phone
- Make sure you know the Google Account username and password used on the phone, and verify that the password works by signing in elsewhere.
- Back up anything important that is not already backed up. A reset removes apps and their local data, even if some Google Account data can later be restored.
- Charge the phone and ensure you can connect to a network for setup afterward. Google’s current guidance recommends charging to at least 70% and notes a factory reset can take up to an hour; details may vary by device and Android version.
- If the prompt appears after a reset or during setup, use the account previously associated with the device. If you cannot access it, use Google’s official account-recovery process rather than a purported bypass.
Some steps in Google’s guidance apply only to Android 14 and newer. Manufacturer menus and behavior can differ, so do not assume instructions for one phone apply to another.

Why a reset may not remove the account check
Factory Reset Protection (FRP) can require the previously associated account after a reset. Its behavior can depend on the reset method and device management. Google’s Android Enterprise guidance on factory reset protection describes management variations and advises contacting the manufacturer if an already locked device was not configured for enterprise FRP. A reset should not be treated as a way to remove account protection.
iPhone or iPad: forgotten passcode means erasing, then restoring if possible
Apple’s supported recovery routes erase the device to regain access after a forgotten passcode. If a backup exists, you can restore it afterward; erasing does not itself recover data that was never backed up.

Reset with a Mac or Windows PC
Apple’s computer-based procedure requires a Mac or Windows PC, an internet connection, and a cable compatible with the iPhone and computer. Connect the iPhone, put it into recovery mode using the button sequence for that model, then choose Restore in Finder or the Apple Devices app. Follow Apple’s instructions to reset an iPhone and passcode with a computer for the correct sequence and app.

Which recovery route fits your situation?
| Device and route | Data impact | Credential or requirement to check | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android factory reset | Erases local data; some account data may be restored if backed up. | Google Account previously used on the phone; manufacturer-specific reset instructions. | FRP may still require the associated account after reset. |
| iPhone reset using a computer | Erases the iPhone; restore a backup afterward if available. | Mac or Windows PC, internet connection, compatible cable, and model-specific recovery-mode sequence. | If recovery mode exits during download, let it finish and enter recovery mode again. |
| iPhone on-device erase | Permanently erases data and settings; restore a backup if available. | Supported OS, prior Find My setup, active network connection, and Apple Account password. | Available only from the Security Lockout screen when eligibility requirements are met. |
| Windows recovery or Reset this PC | Depends on the option: keep personal files or remove everything. | BitLocker recovery key may be required; internet is needed for cloud download. | Choose a recovery tool based on the problem and Windows version. |
If you still cannot get past the prompt
- For Android, confirm you are using an account previously added to the phone; for model-specific reset steps or an already FRP-locked device, contact the manufacturer.
- For an iPhone that cannot be reset with the available computer or on-device route, use Apple’s service guidance or contact an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider.
- For Windows, stop if you are asked for a BitLocker recovery key you do not have and look for the key through the account or organization that manages the PC before attempting a reset.
