Recovered File Checks: What You Can Verify Without a Reference

A hash can confirm a byte-for-byte match to a trusted reference, but it cannot prove completeness or authenticity by itself. Learn how to check a recovered file and describe the evidence accurately.

A checksum can show whether recovered bytes match a trusted reference, but it cannot prove a file is the intended original when no independent reference exists. A file that opens may still be incomplete, and a hash calculated only after recovery is a useful baseline for detecting later changes—not proof of what was recovered.

What a hash actually tells you

A hash, also called a message digest, is a compact fingerprint calculated from the bytes given to a hashing tool. If you compare that digest with a trustworthy digest recorded for the exact expected file, a match supports the conclusion that the byte sequences are identical. If you calculate and save a digest now, then compare it later, a difference can reveal that the file changed.

NIST defines file integrity checking as software that generates, stores, and compares message digests to detect changes to files: NIST Computer Security Resource Center: File Integrity Checking. The reference matters. A digest created only after recovery tells you what bytes you have now; on its own, it cannot tell you whether they are the intended file or whether the sequence was already incomplete.

What a matching digest does not prove

  • Provenance: A match does not identify who created the bytes, where they came from, or how they reached the recovery tool.
  • Completeness: It does not show whether original bytes were overwritten, omitted, or replaced before the digest was calculated.
  • Correct attribution: It cannot establish that the recovered content belongs to the filename or person you associate with it.
  • Meaning: A byte-for-byte match to a reference says nothing by itself about whether the file’s contents are accurate or appropriate for your purpose.

NIST’s discussion of potentially recovered files identifies comparison with a known SHA-256 hash as one way to increase confidence, alongside checking whether the file opens and renders properly. These are different kinds of evidence, not a universal authenticity certificate: NIST-hosted paper by Eoghan Casey, Alexander J. Nelson, and Jessica Hyde (2019).

How to check a recovered file

  1. Preserve the recovered output. Keep the file as obtained and record where and how it was recovered. Avoid changing the file you are evaluating; work from a copy if you need to inspect or modify it.
  2. Calculate a digest and record its scope. Note the algorithm and that the digest represents the bytes supplied to the hashing tool. Keep the digest with the file and the recovery record. This gives you a baseline for detecting later changes, even if no earlier digest exists.
  3. Compare only against a trustworthy reference. Use a prior digest only if it is known to belong to the exact expected file. A matching value supports a byte match to that reference; a digest generated after recovery cannot serve as independent confirmation of the recovery.
  4. Check whether the file behaves like its format. See whether it parses, opens, and renders as expected. Structural usability is evidence about whether the file can be read, not proof that all original data survived.
  5. Check context and related traces. Compare expected size and content with available file-system records, dates, embedded metadata, thumbnails, or cached copies. Assess whether the clues agree rather than treating one as decisive.
  6. Record uncertainty. If partial overwrite or omission cannot be ruled out, say so. In a forensic setting, document the acquisition, tool and version, hashes, observations, and custody of the material so another person can review the result.

Use contextual evidence to assess whether it is the right file

Metadata can help connect recovered bytes to an expected item, but its value depends on context. For a photograph, NIST describes examining EXIF dates and geolocation alongside the filename and other file-system information, and comparing a full-size image with an embedded thumbnail or a Windows thumbnail cache. Agreement among independent traces can strengthen an assessment; disagreement may flag a problem. Neither agreement nor a plausible filename substitutes for a trusted digest when the question is whether the bytes exactly match a known file.

Recovery can also return extraneous material rather than a clean, complete file. NIST’s 2022 review of the scientific foundations of digital investigation discusses that limitation and notes that changes between software revisions can affect the meaning of digital artifacts: NIST, Digital Investigation Techniques: A Review of the Scientific Foundations (2022).

Describe the result without overstating it

Use language that matches the evidence. For example: “The recovered file’s SHA-256 digest matches the digest recorded for the expected file” is justified when that reference is reliable. If you have no prior reference, say that you calculated a digest after recovery and retained it for future change detection. If the file opens, report that it opens; do not turn that observation into a claim that the recovery is complete.

For evidence handling, process reliability matters as well as the bytes: preserve integrity, document chain of custody, and make methods reviewable and repeatable. NIST’s glossary defines digital forensics in terms that include preserving information integrity and chain of custody, and describes practices such as validated tools and reporting: NIST Computer Security Resource Center: Digital Forensics. NIST’s data-integrity recovery guidance provides further context for preserving and recovering data: NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2, Initial Public Draft.
