Its 3x optical periscope camera is the standout feature, but a weaker ultrawide camera, merely midrange performance, and software clutter keep it from being the best all-rounder. Whether it is worth buying now depends on the current price, condition, and regional version.
What the realme 12 Pro+ does best
Announced on January 29, 2024, the realme 12 Pro+ was built around a camera feature that was unusual in its launch price class: a periscope telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. Its rear cameras are a 50 MP main camera, a 64 MP periscope telephoto, and an 8 MP ultrawide. The main camera has optical image stabilization, according to launch-period specifications. realme described its camera system as offering five “lossless zoom levels”: 0.6x, 1x, 2x, 3x, and 6x. That is the company’s description of the system, not an independent guarantee that every zoom level matches the quality of an optical lens. realme’s January 2024 announcement and its Philippines specifications page give the launch and hardware details; regional specifications can differ.

Zoom portraits are the main reason to consider it
The dedicated telephoto camera gives you a useful way to frame distant subjects and portraits without relying only on digital cropping from the main camera. That makes the phone a more interesting camera choice than a handset whose rear cameras are all wide or ultrawide lenses. Reviewers highlighted the telephoto as the defining strength, while noting that image quality is less consistent across the full camera set. GSMArena’s verdict and the Gadgets 360 review discuss its camera performance.
Battery life and design are other positives
Reviews also praised the phone’s comfortable design and battery endurance. Gadgets 360 recorded 26 hours and 46 minutes in its standard video-loop test on its review sample. This is a publication-specific laboratory-style result, not a prediction of how long every owner will get between charges. Some versions use a vegan-leather finish and are rated IP65; check the exact regional model and finish rather than assuming those details apply to every listing. Gadgets 360’s review describes its battery test and design observations.

Where it falls short
Performance is adequate, not a selling point
The Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 is a midrange platform. It should suit ordinary phone tasks, but the realme 12 Pro+ is not a performance leader, and reviews point to alternatives with stronger chipsets. Buyers who play demanding games, care about sustained frame rates, or want the fastest-feeling phone for the money should compare performance before choosing it. Android Central’s review and GSMArena’s specifications and review cover the platform and performance context.
The ultrawide camera is a weaker link
The 8 MP ultrawide is less capable than the main and telephoto cameras, so switching focal lengths can mean a noticeable drop in consistency. If you often photograph wide landscapes, interiors, or groups, compare actual camera results across all lenses rather than judging the phone by its telephoto headline or megapixel counts alone. Android Central notes the camera compromises.

Software may need tidying
The phone launched with Android 14 and realme UI 5.0, but that launch specification does not establish the software version currently installed on a new or used unit, nor how much update support remains. Reviewers reported preinstalled-app clutter, recommendations, or unwanted notifications. Check the current software and update status for the exact device you are considering. Android Central and GSMArena discuss the launch-era software experience.
It is not an across-the-board upgrade over its predecessor
GSMArena’s comparison notes that the 12 Pro+ gave up some headline hardware versus its predecessor, including a lower-resolution main-camera specification and slower charging. Those tradeoffs may or may not matter more than the 12 Pro+’s periscope camera; weigh them against the actual price and your priorities rather than treating a newer model number as an automatic improvement. GSMArena’s verdict discusses the comparison.

Who should buy it—and who should look elsewhere?
| Consider it if… | Look elsewhere if… |
|---|---|
| You want a dedicated 3x optical telephoto camera for zoom shots and portraits. | You prioritize gaming performance or the strongest chipset in your budget. |
| You value battery endurance and a comfortable design. | You need a consistently strong ultrawide camera as well as good main and zoom cameras. |
| You can find a suitable current deal with clear seller, condition, warranty, and return terms. | You want a particularly bright display, faster charging, or a clean software experience without checking the exact alternative and version. |
When comparing similarly priced phones, check whether the rival has a real telephoto lens, how its main and ultrawide cameras perform, sustained gaming speed, screen brightness, charging, software, and regional support. The 12 Pro+ makes the most sense when its zoom camera and battery life matter more to you than the areas where competitors may be stronger.
Price, region, and what to check before buying
The launch-era India pricing was reported as INR 29,999 by MySmartPrice and rounded to about INR 30,000 by GSMArena. These are historical 2024 figures, not current quotations; the available evidence does not establish today’s market price or stock. MySmartPrice’s launch-day review and GSMArena’s verdict provide that launch context.
The specifications cited here include realme’s Philippines product page, while the cited launch price is Indian. Before purchasing in any other market, verify the precise model and configuration, network-band compatibility, warranty and service coverage, software-update status, and the seller’s terms. The launch price should not be used to judge whether a current listing is good value.
