For a Windows PC connecting to Remote Desktop Services (RDS), start with the Remote Desktop client unless your administrator directs you to another entry point. Microsoft recommends Windows App where it supports the required RDS connection, while its current RDS platform table still lists the Remote Desktop client for Windows and web-browser access. On macOS, iPhone, iPad and Android, Windows App is listed where supported, although the Remote Desktop client may remain available for particular resources. Browser access works only when your organization has published the Remote Desktop web client, supplied its URL and configured the required gateway.
The most important distinction is naming: RD Web Access usually means an RDS server role and portal, while the Remote Desktop web client is a separate browser-based session client. They can expose published desktops and apps, but they are not interchangeable URLs or products.

What the names mean
“RD Web Access” can describe the Remote Desktop Services Web Access role and the web page that lists published resources. The Remote Desktop web client is a separate browser client that opens those resources in a browser session. Microsoft explicitly says the web client does not replace the RD Web Access page; an organization can publish resources through either browser entry point. Ask your administrator which URL they intend you to use before troubleshooting a sign-in failure or an empty resource list.

Windows App is Microsoft’s successor to the Remote Desktop client, and Microsoft says, “You should use Windows App to connect to Remote Desktop Services where possible as it replaces the Remote Desktop client.” That recommendation applies to RDS connections covered by the relevant support matrix; it should not be automatically transferred to Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365 or Dev Box, which have separate guidance.

In practical terms, you may encounter three choices:
- Remote Desktop web client: a browser session at an administrator-provided URL.
- Remote Desktop client: a native client listed for Windows and browser access in Microsoft’s current RDS matrix, with platform-specific feature support.
- Windows App: Microsoft’s preferred successor where the required RDS platform and resource are supported.
Which option should you use?
| Your situation | Best starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Windows device connecting to RDS | Remote Desktop client | Microsoft’s cited RDS matrix does not list the Windows App RDS entry as supported for this Windows scenario; confirm the client required by your IT team. |
| macOS, iPhone, iPad or Android device | Windows App where the resource is supported | Check the particular RDS resource and feature requirements; the Remote Desktop client is also listed for these environments in Microsoft’s comparison material. |
| Browser access from a Windows, macOS, ChromeOS or Linux PC | Remote Desktop web client | Your administrator must publish it and provide its URL. You also need a supported browser and an RDS Gateway. |
| You were given an “RD Web Access” portal URL | Use that portal as instructed | Confirm whether the URL is the Web Access page or the separate web-client endpoint; the two addresses are different. |
| You need local files, advanced clipboard use, peripherals or several displays | Compare a native client with the web client | Check the feature matrix for your exact service, client and operating system before choosing browser access. |
There is no official performance benchmark in the cited Microsoft documentation that establishes one option as universally faster. Device, network, gateway configuration and the features enabled by your organization matter more than a generic ranking.
Remote Desktop web client: when it fits
Supported computers and browsers
Microsoft’s web-client guide supports Windows, macOS, ChromeOS and Linux PCs. Supported browsers listed there include Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Mozilla Firefox 55 or later. Mobile devices are not supported by that guide, so a phone browser is not a substitute for the Windows App or another supported client.
You need the URL sent by your administrator and your organization account. Do not assume that a public Microsoft address will work: the web client is hosted as part of your organization’s RDS deployment, and the administrator controls whether it is exposed.
Gateway and deployment requirements
The Microsoft FAQ answers the question “Can I use the web client without a gateway?” with “No. The client requires a Remote Desktop Gateway to connect.” The documented deployment also includes RD Connection Broker and RD Web Access. Administrators must account for trusted certificates and licensing configuration, and should match the setup instructions to the deployed Windows Server version and architecture rather than treating every command as universal.

For users, this means a browser error may reflect a server-side deployment issue rather than a bad password. If the administrator has not published the web client, installed the gateway path or configured a trusted certificate, changing browsers will not solve the problem.
What browser sessions can and cannot do
The web client is useful when you cannot install software on a managed computer or need a temporary session from a supported desktop browser. Its documented limitations are important for routine work:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Clipboard support is text-only through
Ctrl+CandCtrl+V. - You cannot copy and paste files through the clipboard.
- The separate file-transfer controls document a 255 MB maximum download size.
- Printing uses the browser’s Remote Desktop Virtual Printer workflow to create a PDF.
These constraints can be acceptable for line-of-business applications and occasional access, but they can make a native client preferable for file-heavy work, complex peripheral use or workflows that depend on richer clipboard behavior.
Remote Desktop client and Windows App: choosing a native option
Remote Desktop client
The Remote Desktop client remains the relevant choice in parts of Microsoft’s RDS matrix, including Windows and browser access entries. It is also still listed in Microsoft’s cross-platform client material. A native client is generally the safer starting point when your organization gives you a server name, feed URL or connection file rather than a browser URL, or when your work needs capabilities that the web client limits.
Do not infer that every feature available in one native build exists on every platform. Microsoft maintains a platform comparison for display redirection, audio, clipboard, drives, printers, peripherals and other capabilities. Use that matrix for the operating system and client version you will actually run.

Windows App
Windows App is the successor Microsoft recommends where possible for RDS. The current platform table lists Windows App for macOS, iOS/iPadOS and Android scenarios, while the Remote Desktop client remains the listed path for Windows and web-browser access in the RDS comparison. This is why “use Windows App everywhere” is not a reliable instruction for an RDS user on Windows.

Compare the features you actually need
Choose by task rather than by the word “web” or “client.” List the operations you perform in a remote session, then check the exact platform matrix linked by Microsoft.
| Requirement | Remote Desktop web client | Native client or Windows App decision |
|---|---|---|
| Text copied between local and remote sessions | Documented with Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V |
Verify the platform-specific clipboard entry in Microsoft’s feature comparison. |
| Copying files through the clipboard | Not supported; use the separate transfer controls where enabled | Check whether drive or file redirection is available in the exact client and policy. |
| Downloading a file from the remote session | Documented maximum: 255 MB | Confirm the client’s transfer and redirection limits with IT. |
| Printing | Browser Remote Desktop Virtual Printer creates a PDF | Check printer redirection and the supported workflow for your platform. |
| Multiple monitors | Support depends on the browser client and deployment | Use the platform feature matrix and test the organization’s configuration. |
| Sound, peripherals and other advanced redirection | Support varies by platform and deployment | Verify audio, USB, drive, printer and device requirements before standardizing. |
Microsoft’s FAQ documents enabling multiple monitors for a remote desktop and describes bidirectional sound configuration in the Windows client. Those references do not guarantee identical behavior in every browser or mobile build. If monitors, audio, scanners, smart-card readers, USB devices or local drives are essential, make the feature check part of acceptance testing rather than discovering a limitation after deployment.
How to start with each access method
Using the Remote Desktop web client
- Ask IT for the Remote Desktop web-client URL, not merely an “RD Web Access” address, and confirm that your account is entitled to the published desktop or app.
- Use a supported desktop operating system: Windows, macOS, ChromeOS or Linux. Do not use a phone or tablet browser for this workflow.
- Open the URL in a supported, current browser: Edge, Chrome, Safari or Firefox 55 or later.
- Sign in with the organization account and select the published resource.
- Test the specific functions you need: text clipboard, file transfer, printing, monitors and audio. A successful sign-in does not prove that every redirection feature is enabled.
- If the page loads but no resources appear, ask the administrator to verify RD Web Access publication, Connection Broker permissions and the account’s assignment.
Using a native Remote Desktop client
- Confirm which client your organization supports for your operating system and RDS deployment.
- Obtain the exact feed URL, server name or connection file from IT. Do not substitute the web-client URL unless the administrator says both endpoints are configured.
- Install or open the approved client and add the supplied workspace or connection.
- Sign in using the organization’s required authentication method.
- Before relying on local resources, check policy and client settings for clipboard, drives, printers, audio, displays and peripherals.
- Record the client version and operating system when reporting a problem; support behavior is platform-specific.
Using Windows App
- Check that Windows App is the supported RDS client for your device and the particular published resource.
- Use the workspace or connection details supplied by the administrator.
- Sign in and open the assigned desktop or application.
- Validate the features your work requires against Microsoft’s cross-platform comparison, especially if you are moving from the older Remote Desktop client.
RD Web Access page versus web-client URL
The two browser addresses often cause the most avoidable confusion. The RD Web Access page is an RDS web portal managed as part of the server role. The Remote Desktop web client is the browser session interface. Microsoft says either can show published resources, but the web client does not replace the RD Web Access page.

When an administrator says “go to RD Web,” ask these precise questions:
- Is this the RD Web Access portal or the Remote Desktop web-client endpoint?
- Should I select a resource in a portal, or open a browser session directly?
- Which account, gateway and multifactor-authentication steps are required?
- Is my device supported, and are there restrictions on file transfer, printing or monitors?
Getting the wrong URL can produce a valid sign-in page that nevertheless lacks the expected launch behavior. The remedy is to obtain the organization’s documented entry point, not to guess at a path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting by symptom
“The web client will not connect”
- Confirm that you are using the URL issued by the administrator and that it is the web-client URL.
- Ask whether the RD Gateway is online and configured; Microsoft requires a gateway for the web client.
- Check the browser and operating system against the supported list, and retry with a current desktop browser.
- Have IT verify trusted certificates, RD Web Access, Connection Broker and licensing settings in the deployment.
“I can sign in, but the desktop or app is missing”
- Verify that your account has been assigned the published resource.
- Confirm that you are signing in to the correct organization’s endpoint rather than a different RD Web Access site.
- Ask the administrator to check publication and broker permissions.
“Copy and paste works for text but not files”
This is expected in the documented web-client behavior: clipboard copy and paste is text-only, and files cannot be copied and pasted that way. Use the separate file-transfer controls if your organization has enabled them, and remember the documented 255 MB download limit. If your workflow requires unrestricted file movement, compare a native client and the organization’s security policy.
“Printing produces a PDF instead of my local printer”
The web client uses the browser’s Remote Desktop Virtual Printer workflow to create a PDF. Save or open that PDF locally, then print it through the local operating system. Ask IT about printer redirection if your process requires a directly mapped printer and the native client supports it.

Version and browser changes to watch
Microsoft’s release notes list Remote Desktop web client version 2.1.85.0, published August 20, 2026, with bug fixes and security updates. Client versions change, so record the version when diagnosing a problem and check the current release notes rather than relying on an old setup article.
The same release notes announce that the next release will require a browser no more than 12 months old on a rolling basis, AVC codec support and WebGL enabled. Those are announced upcoming requirements; the notes do not state that they were already mandatory for version 2.1.85.0. Keep browsers updated and verify the requirement at the time your organization upgrades.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the service: confirm that you are connecting to Remote Desktop Services, not Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365 or Dev Box.
- Identify the endpoint: determine whether IT supplied an RD Web Access portal, a web-client URL, a native-client feed or Windows App instructions.
- Match the device: check the RDS platform matrix for Windows, macOS, iOS/iPadOS, Android or a desktop browser.
- Confirm the gateway: web-client sessions require an RD Gateway.
- List required features: clipboard, file transfer, printing, multiple monitors, sound and peripherals can change the correct choice.
- Check limits: browser clipboard is text-only, browser file downloads are documented up to 255 MB and printing creates a PDF.
- Check freshness: review current release notes and browser requirements before a rollout.
- Follow organizational policy: the supported client may be determined by authentication, licensing, certificates and help-desk procedures as well as technical capability.
Bottom line
Use the Remote Desktop client on a Windows PC when your organization has not directed you to another RDS path. Use Windows App where Microsoft’s RDS matrix supports your device and resource, particularly on macOS, iOS/iPadOS and Android. Choose the Remote Desktop web client when your administrator has published it and you value browser access from a supported desktop computer, while accepting its gateway dependency and limits on clipboard, file transfer and printing. First clarify whether “RD Web Access” means the portal page or the separate web-client URL; that distinction prevents most setup mistakes.
