Work from least disruptive to most advanced: check service status, test the PS5 connection, update the app and console, restart, reinstall the app, then use license and Safe Mode options only if necessary. Try playback again after every step so you can identify which change resolved the problem.

Start by defining exactly what is broken

- Black screen: menus may work, but the video area stays blank.
- Buffering or freezing: playback starts and repeatedly pauses, or the picture stops while controls remain responsive.

Compare the scope before troubleshooting
Try another episode or show in the same app, then try a different streaming app on the PS5. If possible, play the same service on another device using the same home network. For a support request, note the PS5 system-software version, the app version, your region, the affected shows or episodes, whether you use subtitles or a dub, the exact error details, and whether the app crashes at launch or during playback. Crunchyroll specifically asks for these details in its PlayStation troubleshooting intake.
Check outages before changing the console
Open PlayStation’s official service-status information and the anime provider’s own status or support page. If either service reports an outage, repeated reinstalls will not restore playback; wait for the incident to clear and test again. An outage can affect sign-in, catalogs, video delivery, or only a subset of users, so the absence of an alert does not rule out a smaller incident.
When no outage is reported, continue with the local connection test. If an outage appears while you are troubleshooting, stop changing settings and retry after the provider says service has recovered.

On the PS5, open Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. Let the test complete, then compare the result with your observations on other devices and apps.
Use the result to choose the next branch
- If several PS5 streaming apps and other devices have trouble, investigate the home network or internet service first.
- If other apps play normally but one anime app fails, continue with that app’s update and installation steps.
- If the test succeeds but video still buffers, compare the same service on another device. A successful console connection test does not guarantee that a particular provider’s video service is available.
- If only one show or episode fails while other titles play, check the provider’s catalog and regional-availability information before changing network settings.
Do not treat a connection-test result as a diagnosis by itself. Its value is in showing whether the failure is broad or limited when combined with the comparison tests above.
Repeat the comparison after a change
Use the same episode for each retest, then try one different title. If you change several settings at once, you will not know which action helped. A simple log of the time, error message, and result after each step is useful if you later contact support.
Update the streaming app and PS5 software
Update the app
- Highlight the affected streaming app on the PS5 home screen.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Select Check for Update and install any available update.
- Open the app and retry the same episode that failed.
An app update can correct launch crashes, playback errors, subtitle problems, or compatibility issues introduced by a service-side change. If no update is offered, continue rather than repeatedly checking.

Update PS5 system software
- Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Install an available system-software update and allow the console to restart if prompted.
- Launch the streaming app again and test playback.
Software requirements change. For example, the Crunchyroll supported-device page reviewed in October 2026 listed PS5 as supported and gave system software 6.00.00.00 as the minimum at that time. That requirement is changeable, so check Crunchyroll’s current supported-device information rather than treating the number as permanent or as a requirement for every anime app.

Do not use Crunchyroll’s minimum version as a universal requirement for Netflix, Hulu, or another service. Each provider can publish different supported-device rules and app versions. If the provider’s current page conflicts with what the app displays, capture both versions for support.
Restart the PS5 completely
Restart the console from the control center after installing updates, or when the app has become stuck. A restart closes the app, clears its active session, and reloads system services without deleting installed games or applications. Reopen the app and test the same title, then test a second title if the first one still fails.
Do not confuse a normal restart with a factory reset. A restart is a routine troubleshooting step; resetting the console is a destructive action and is not appropriate for an ordinary playback error.
Delete and reinstall the affected app
If the app remains broken after updating and restarting, remove the app and download it again from the PS5 media area or PlayStation Store. Reinstallation replaces damaged or incomplete application files and can resolve an app that crashes, shows a black screen, or refuses to start playback.
- Highlight the affected app on the PS5 home screen.
- Press Options and choose the delete or remove command shown by the console.
- Download the app again from the PS5 media/app area or PlayStation Store.
- Sign in if required, open the app, and retry the previously failing content.
Reinstalling an app does not establish that the provider’s service is available in your region, and it will not correct an episode that the service has removed or restricted. If only one title remains unavailable after a clean installation, move to the catalog and region checks below.
Crunchyroll installation and storage checks
Crunchyroll’s PS4/PS5 video guidance specifically recommends reinstalling its app when playback problems persist. If Crunchyroll is installed on extended storage, its guidance also recommends moving the app to Console Storage for best performance, then testing again.
Moving the app is relevant to Crunchyroll’s published instructions, not a blanket requirement for every anime service. Check where the app is installed before changing storage, and retest after the move rather than combining it with several other changes.
Perform Crunchyroll’s full power shutdown
For Crunchyroll playback problems, fully turn off the PS5 rather than leaving it in Rest Mode. Unplug the console’s power cable for 30 seconds, reconnect it, turn the PS5 on, and try the app again. This is a provider-specific instruction; do not assume every streaming app publishes the same requirement.

Check catalog and regional availability
If one show, season, or episode fails while other videos play, licensing may explain the behavior. Providers can offer different catalogs by country or region, and a title can be unavailable even when the application itself is working correctly.
Check the service’s catalog or availability guidance for your region and compare the affected title with another title. Do not use a VPN as a presumed fix: Crunchyroll says VPN use is unsupported and may cause playback or access problems. A VPN can therefore introduce another variable instead of resolving the original restriction.
When only a single episode is affected, include the exact show, season, episode number, language track, and region in a support request. That information helps the provider distinguish a catalog issue from a broken video asset or account-specific error.
How to tell a catalog issue from a playback issue
- If every episode in the app fails, treat the problem as an app, network, outage, or console issue and continue the main sequence.
- If one series fails but another series plays, check the title’s regional listing and try another episode.
- If only a subtitle or dub option fails, record that language choice; the provider may need to investigate one track rather than the entire video.
- If the title is absent or marked unavailable on another device in the same region, changing PS5 settings is unlikely to restore it.
