Yes, a Windows PC usually keeps running after its version stops receiving updates, but it is no longer as safe as a supported installation. When Microsoft ends support, the computer does not suddenly shut down; it loses regular security fixes, other software updates and technical assistance. New vulnerabilities can therefore remain unpatched. For Windows 10 version 22H2, the end-of-support date was October 14, 2025.
Your practical choices are to upgrade an eligible computer to Windows 11, enroll an eligible personal device in Windows 10 consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) for a limited bridge period, or replace an ineligible computer. Antivirus helps detect some threats, but it cannot supply the operating-system fixes that Microsoft no longer publishes.

What “no longer gets updates” actually means
“No updates” can describe several different situations, so start by identifying the exact Windows version and edition. A temporary failure in Windows Update is not the same as a Microsoft support deadline. Windows support is tied to a release and edition, not to the brand name alone.
For Windows 10 version 22H2, Microsoft ended normal support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides the normal stream of software updates, security updates, fixes or technical assistance for that release. The machine can still boot, run installed programs and connect to the internet. The security problem is that newly discovered weaknesses may remain open because the operating system is no longer receiving the fixes distributed to supported versions.

Microsoft summarizes the consequence this way: “Without regular security updates from Microsoft, the operating system remains exposed to new threats.” That warning applies to an unsupported release; it should not be generalized to every Windows edition or every Windows 10 version without checking its lifecycle.
Identify your Windows release before deciding
Do not apply the Windows 10 22H2 date to a different release automatically. Check both the version and the edition on the computer you are making a decision about.
- Check the version number: press
Windows key + R, enterwinver, and select OK. Record the Windows edition and version shown in the dialog. - Check the installed edition and hardware details: open Settings > System > About. Note whether the installation is Home, Pro or another edition, along with the processor, installed RAM and system type.
- Check update status: open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10, or Settings > Windows Update where that page is available. A notice about end of support is different from an ordinary download error.
- Check whether an upgrade is offered: use the Windows Update page to see whether Microsoft marks the PC as eligible for Windows 11. Eligibility is assessed for the specific device, so do not infer it from another computer’s result.
Keep a note of the version, edition and the date displayed by Windows Update. Those details determine whether an upgrade or consumer ESU enrollment is offered.
Your three realistic paths
The right choice depends on whether the current hardware can run a supported Windows release, how long you need the computer, and whether your region and device qualify for ESU.
| Path | Best fit | What support you receive | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upgrade to Windows 11 | The current PC is marked eligible and you want a continuing supported installation | Moves the device to a supported Windows version under Microsoft’s normal servicing terms | Requires compatible hardware, free storage and time for the upgrade; compatibility is device-specific |
| Windows 10 consumer ESU | An eligible personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 PC needs a temporary bridge | Critical and important security updates during the enrollment period | No new features, non-security updates or technical support; regional terms and dates apply |
| Replace the computer | The hardware is ineligible, unreliable or no longer meets your workload | A new Windows 11 computer can start with a supported operating system | Up-front cost, migration work and the need to choose hardware that fits your tasks |
ESU is not a full continuation of normal support. It is a way to reduce exposure while you arrange an upgrade or replacement.

Option 1: Upgrade an eligible PC to Windows 11
If Windows Update says your computer is eligible, Microsoft identifies upgrading as the preferred way to move to a supported version.
Before you start
- Back up documents, photos, browser data and any application files to a separate location. A major operating-system change is not a substitute for a backup.
- Install pending Windows 10 updates and restart the computer before checking eligibility again. A stale update state can obscure the current offer.
- Confirm that applications, peripherals and accessibility tools you rely on have Windows 11-compatible versions.
- Make sure the computer is plugged into power and has enough free storage for the installer and temporary files.
Run the supported upgrade
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and allow the page to finish evaluating the device.
- If Windows 11 is offered as an eligible upgrade, read the compatibility and restart notices, then choose the offered install control.
- Keep the computer connected to power and do not force a shutdown while the installation restarts.
- After Windows 11 starts, open Settings > Windows Update and install all available updates. Reconnect printers, storage and other devices only after confirming they are recognized.
If Windows Update does not offer Windows 11, treat that result as a compatibility signal rather than repeatedly forcing an installation. Microsoft’s supported route is to use the eligibility result, a temporary ESU bridge where available, or replacement hardware.

Microsoft describes consumer Extended Security Updates for qualifying personal-use devices running Windows 10 version 22H2 in most markets. Enrollment is presented through Settings for devices that meet the requirements. Availability can depend on your region, the device’s circumstances and the terms shown during enrollment.
What ESU does and does not provide
- Included: critical and important security updates for the enrolled Windows 10 device.
- Not included: new features, ordinary non-security updates and technical support.
- Purpose: a short-term reduction in risk while you arrange a supported upgrade or replacement, not a permanent substitute for a supported operating system.
How to check and enroll
- Sign in to the personal Windows 10 account used on the computer.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Look for the consumer ESU enrollment notice. If it is absent, the device or region may not qualify, or the offer may not yet be available for that account.
- Read the eligibility, coverage and end-date information shown in the enrollment screen before accepting.
- Complete enrollment, restart if Windows requests it, and continue checking Windows Update so the ESU security updates can install.
Official Microsoft pages currently show conflicting consumer ESU end dates: one Windows end-of-support page says eligible devices receive updates through October 13, 2026, while a Microsoft Support article says protection can continue until October 12, 2027. Do not treat either date as universal. Use the date and terms displayed for your region and enrollment in Settings, and recheck them if your circumstances change.
Option 3: Replace an ineligible or unsuitable PC
Replacement is the durable answer when the current computer cannot receive a supported Windows 11 upgrade, cannot qualify for ESU, or no longer handles your work reliably. Microsoft lists a new Windows 11 PC as an option; the specific model should be chosen around your needs rather than a one-size-fits-all specification.

Match the computer to the job
- Workload: office documents and web use have different processor, memory and storage needs from video editing, software development or 3D work.
- Portability: a desktop can offer easier upgrades, while a laptop trades some upgradeability for a screen, battery and built-in input devices.
- Accessibility: check display size, keyboard feel, touch support, ports, audio and compatibility with screen readers, magnification or other assistive tools.
- Longevity: select a configuration that leaves practical headroom for the applications you expect to use during the computer’s service life.
- Migration: plan time to transfer files, reinstall applications, sign in to accounts and securely erase or recycle the old device.
Do not buy new hardware solely because an unsupported Windows installation is inconvenient if your existing PC is eligible for Windows 11. Replacement is most compelling when compatibility, reliability or workload needs make an upgrade impractical.

Why antivirus cannot make an unsupported Windows installation equivalent to a supported one
Antivirus software can help identify malicious files and activity, but Microsoft explicitly says it is not a substitute for operating-system security updates. Windows itself contains components, drivers, networking code and system services that can need fixes. An antivirus product cannot publish Microsoft’s patches for those components.
Keep antivirus enabled and updated, but do not use a clean scan as proof that an unsupported PC is safe. A scan reports what the product detects; it does not prove that every unpatched vulnerability has been closed.

When an upgrade or replacement cannot happen immediately, reduce avoidable exposure while you arrange one of the supported paths. These steps limit opportunities for compromise; they do not restore missing Microsoft updates.
- Enroll in consumer ESU immediately if Windows offers it and you meet the displayed conditions.
- Keep the browser, password manager, productivity applications and device firmware on their latest supported versions.
- Use a standard user account for everyday work instead of administering the computer continuously.
- Enable the firewall, use unique passwords with multifactor authentication where available, and remove software you no longer need.
- Maintain offline or otherwise separately protected backups. Test that you can restore an important file.
- Avoid opening unexpected attachments, installing pirated software or bypassing security warnings.
- Do not use an unsupported PC for especially sensitive activities if a supported device is available.
Set a concrete replacement or upgrade date rather than allowing a temporary workaround to become your permanent security plan.

Common decision mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every Windows version shares the Windows 10 date
Support timelines differ by version and edition. Record the result of winver and verify the lifecycle notice for that exact release.
Confusing “the PC still works” with “the PC is supported”
Functionality after October 14, 2025 does not mean Windows 10 version 22H2 continues receiving normal fixes. The absence of a shutdown message is not evidence of ongoing support.
Treating ESU as a feature upgrade
ESU supplies only the security coverage described in its terms. It does not add Windows 11 features, restore ordinary non-security servicing or create a support hotline.
Relying on an old ESU date found in a general article
Microsoft’s published pages currently disagree on whether consumer coverage ends October 13, 2026 or October 12, 2027. Check the enrollment screen for your market instead of copying a date from a different region or an earlier page.
Forcing Windows 11 onto unsupported hardware
If Windows Update does not mark the computer eligible, forcing an installation can create compatibility and servicing problems. Use Microsoft’s supported eligibility result, ESU where offered, or replacement.
A practical decision sequence
- Identify: record the Windows version and edition with
winverand Settings > System > About. - Check: open Windows Update and see whether Windows 11 is offered.
- Choose the time horizon: select an upgrade for ongoing support, ESU only for a qualifying bridge period, or replacement when the device is ineligible or unsuitable.
- Verify terms: if ESU appears, read the region-specific coverage and end date shown during enrollment.
- Protect during transition: keep backups, antivirus, firewall and applications current while scheduling the supported end state.
The important distinction is between continued operation and continued security servicing. A computer that no longer receives updates can remain useful, but its risk profile changes on the day regular security fixes stop.
