Google Drive for desktop is the better default for most people who want a familiar Finder or File Explorer experience, cloud-first streaming, and a simple switch to a complete offline copy. rclone is better for technically comfortable users who need command-line control, scripted transfers, explicit one-way copy or sync behavior, or a carefully managed two-way workflow.
The choice is not a general speed contest. Official documentation does not establish a universal performance winner. Decide instead how much local storage you can allocate, whether files must work offline, whether you use shared drives or Google-native documents, and how much control you want over automation, conflicts, and deletions.

Google Drive for desktop and rclone solve different problems
Google Drive for desktop is an integrated desktop application. It presents Google Drive in Finder or File Explorer and gives you two storage modes for My Drive: streaming and mirroring. You choose the behavior in the app rather than constructing a transfer command.

rclone is a command-line file-transfer and synchronization tool. You authorize a Google Drive remote, give it a name, and operate on paths with commands such as copy, sync, mount, and bisync. That makes it adaptable to scripts, scheduled jobs, local folders, and other cloud backends, but it also means you are responsible for choosing safe semantics and reviewing changes.

Neither product should be treated as an automatic backup merely because it synchronizes files. A deletion or unwanted edit can propagate to another location. Keep an independent backup when recovery matters.
At-a-glance comparison
| Decision area | Google Drive for desktop | rclone |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday workflow | Files appear in Finder or File Explorer through one desktop app; choose streaming or mirroring for My Drive. | Configure a Google Drive remote, then run commands or build your own scheduled workflow. |
| Local storage | Streaming keeps most content in the cloud; mirroring keeps a complete local copy and uses disk space. | Storage depends on the operation: a local copy consumes disk space, while a mount presents remote files without one universal local-storage mode. |
| Offline access | Mirrored My Drive files are offline by default. Streamed files must be marked available offline. Shared drives are stream-only. | Files copied to a local path are available locally. Mount behavior depends on the operating system and application. |
| Interface and setup | Graphical preferences and built-in account integration. | Browser authorization followed by command-line configuration. |
| Control | One integrated sync experience with fewer choices. | Explicit source and destination semantics, scripting, dry runs, and advanced conflict handling. |
| Risk profile | Mode changes and unfinished uploads can cause loss if handled incorrectly. | sync and bisync can modify or overwrite destination files; safe use requires previews and an understanding of state and conflicts. |
For the documented behavior behind Drive’s modes, see Google’s stream and mirror guide. rclone’s command semantics are described in its official documentation.
How Google Drive for desktop’s two modes work
Streaming: cloud-first files with a smaller local footprint
Streaming keeps files primarily in Google’s cloud. Drive for desktop uses local storage for files you open and for recently or frequently used content, so the computer does not need room for the entire My Drive. Normally, a streamed file requires an internet connection unless you explicitly make it available offline, and streamed files generally require Drive for desktop to be running.
Streaming is the practical choice when My Drive is larger than the computer’s free space, when several computers access the same account, or when you want to avoid maintaining a second full copy. It is less suitable for travel, unreliable connectivity, or software that expects every file to be a conventional local file at all times.
Mirroring: a complete local copy
Mirroring stores files both in the cloud and on the computer. As Google’s help page puts it, “Mirrored files will always be stored on your computer and in the cloud.” My Drive files in the mirrored folder are available offline and use local disk capacity equal to the material being retained, subject to the space needed by the operating system and other applications.

Google says applications involving extensive writing, video editing, or high-resolution photo editing can be faster with mirrored files because those programs work against local data. That is a workload-specific advantage, not a universal speed guarantee.
What can and cannot be streamed or mirrored
- My Drive can be streamed or mirrored.
- Shared drives can only be streamed through Drive for desktop.
- Other computers and backed-up USB devices can only be streamed.
- Local folders on the computer can only be mirrored.
If you need a full offline copy and the selected folder will not fit on the internal drive, an external drive can provide additional capacity. It is an optional way to satisfy the storage requirement, not a requirement imposed by rclone or Drive for desktop itself.

Let all local changes finish uploading before changing from mirroring to streaming or moving the old mirrored folder. Google warns that deleting or moving a mirrored folder before unfinished changes upload can lose those files. When you switch to mirroring, Drive downloads My Drive into the folder you select. If a local file and the cloud version differ, Drive may retain both versions rather than silently choosing one.
Google documents additional platform and offline details in its Drive for desktop advanced guide, including behavior that can matter on macOS’s File Provider implementation.
What rclone’s commands actually do
copy: add or update files without making the destination identical
rclone’s copy operation transfers files that are not already copied and skips files it considers unchanged. It does not, by itself, remove destination files that no longer exist at the source. This is often the safer starting point for a one-way upload or download because an unrelated destination file is not deleted merely for being absent from the source.

A typical pattern after configuring a remote named gdrive is:
Recommended Free Tools
rclone copy /path/to/local-folder gdrive:remote-folder
Replace the paths with your own values. Read the command documentation and test the exact source and destination before using it in an automated job.
sync: make the destination match the source
sync changes the destination as needed so it becomes identical to the source. That can include deleting destination files that are not present in the source. It is useful for a deliberate one-way mirror, but dangerous when the direction, path, or account is wrong.
rclone sync /path/to/local-folder gdrive:remote-folder
Use a preview before applying changes:
rclone sync /path/to/local-folder gdrive:remote-folder --dry-run
Inspect the planned additions, updates, and deletions. While learning, rclone specifically recommends the interactive flag: “Please use the --interactive/-i flag while learning rclone to avoid accidental data loss.”
rclone sync /path/to/local-folder gdrive:remote-folder --dry-run --interactive
bisync: two-way synchronization with state
bisync synchronizes changes in both paths. It is an advanced feature, not a drop-in clone of Drive for desktop’s always-running desktop behavior. It keeps state between runs, has explicit resynchronization behavior, and must handle conflicts when both sides changed.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The documented learning sequence is:
- Configure and verify both paths.
- Run an initial resynchronization as directed by the bisync documentation.
- Review a dry run and the proposed conflict outcomes.
- Run later synchronizations without repeatedly forcing the resync flag.
A resync or conflict choice can overwrite a differing version. Treat that decision as an operational procedure, not as a harmless refresh button. Keep a separate backup of important data before experimenting.
Offline access, shared drives, and Google-native files
Offline requirements
Choose mirroring in Drive for desktop when all My Drive content must remain available without internet access. With streaming, select individual files or folders for offline use and confirm that the local disk has enough room. Shared drives remain stream-only in the desktop app, so their offline behavior cannot be changed to the mirrored model.
With rclone, a file copied to a local directory is an ordinary local file and remains available offline. A mounted remote is different: applications read through the mount, and behavior depends on the mount implementation, operating system, caching, and the application itself.
Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and shortcuts
rclone’s Google Drive backend notes that native Google Docs can have unknown sizes in some operations. They transfer with copy and sync, but downloading them through mount can fail or produce a zero-sized file depending on the application and operating system.
Bisync supports Google Docs starting with rclone v1.66. When syncing from Drive to a non-Drive backend, rclone’s documented default export formats include DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and SVG. URL shortcuts exported to a non-Drive side behave as read-only placeholders rather than ordinary editable files. Check the current Google Drive backend documentation for format and mount details before designing an archive or cross-provider workflow.

Setup paths for each choice
Set up Google Drive for desktop
- Install and sign in to Drive for desktop with the Google account that owns or can access the files.
- Open the app’s preferences and locate the Google Drive section.
- Choose Stream files for cloud-first access with lower local storage use, or Mirror files for a complete local My Drive copy.
- If streaming, mark the specific files or folders needed offline and verify their offline status before disconnecting.
- If mirroring, select a local folder with enough free capacity and wait for the initial download and synchronization to finish.
- Before changing modes or relocating the folder, confirm that pending uploads and downloads have completed.
Remember that the mode applies differently to My Drive, shared drives, other computers, backed-up USB devices, and local computer folders. The options are not interchangeable across those locations.
Set up an rclone Google Drive remote
- Install rclone from its official distribution and run
rclone config. - Create a new remote, choose the Google Drive storage type, and complete browser-based authorization.
- Give the remote a short name such as
gdrive; that name becomes part of every path you use. - List the remote and inspect a small directory before transferring a large tree.
- Choose
copyfor additive one-way transfers, syncwhen you intentionally want the destination to match the source, orbisynconly after studying its state and conflict rules. - Run with
--dry-run, review the output, and use--interactivewhile learning. - Only then schedule the command or remove the preview flag for a production run.
Google Drive can rate-limit requests, and many small-file transfers may take longer. The backend documentation also warns that duplicate uploads can occur in some circumstances. During 2026, rclone’s shared client ID is being retired; current guidance says users should create and use their own client ID to avoid interruption. Because that policy is time-sensitive, follow the current instructions in the backend guide when configuring authorization.
Sync safety: the mistakes that matter most
Confusing synchronization with backup
A synchronized destination reflects later source changes, including deletions in workflows designed to make both sides identical. A backup preserves historical or independent copies. If accidental deletion, ransomware, or a bad edit is a concern, maintain a separate backup rather than relying on either tool’s sync view.
Running the wrong direction
For rclone, source comes first and destination comes second. A reversed path can overwrite the location you meant to preserve. Use a dry run against a small test directory, read every deletion line, and verify the remote name before expanding the scope.
Forcing bisync resynchronization
Bisync’s resync behavior is designed for recovery and initialization, not casual repeated use. It can choose one side as authoritative and replace a differing version. Record which copy is authoritative, resolve conflicts deliberately, and retain a backup before resyncing.
Changing Drive modes too early
With a mirrored Drive folder, wait for all changes to upload before deleting, moving, or replacing the folder. An apparently complete local operation can still have pending cloud work.
Which option fits your situation?
- Choose Google Drive for desktop streaming when local disk is limited, you want files in Finder or File Explorer, and internet access is normally available.
- Choose Google Drive for desktop mirroring when you need a straightforward full offline copy of My Drive and have enough local storage.
- Choose rclone copy for controlled one-way transfers that should not remove unrelated destination files.
- Choose rclone sync only when a destination that exactly follows a known source is the intended result and deletions are acceptable.
- Choose rclone bisync when you genuinely need two-way changes, can manage state and conflicts, and are prepared to review dry runs and recovery procedures.
- Prefer Drive for desktop over rclone if you do not want to maintain commands, credentials, schedules, and conflict policies.
- Prefer rclone over Drive for desktop if automation, scripting, explicit transfer direction, or integration with local and other cloud paths is more important than a polished desktop interface.
There is no documented overall winner independent of workload. The reliable decision is to match the tool’s storage model and risk controls to the files you actually handle: stream when cloud-first access is enough, mirror when offline completeness matters, and use rclone when command-level control justifies the additional responsibility.
