Choose the Razer Kraken V4 X instead if retractable microphone storage, Chroma RGB lighting, Razer software or a USB-C-first setup are your priorities.
Neither headset has been established as the objective sound or microphone winner: no controlled head-to-head measurements of frequency response, latency, isolation or recording quality are available here. Driver diameter is not a sound-quality ranking. A larger driver can be tuned differently from a smaller one, and enclosure design, damping, equalization and fit affect what you hear more than the diameter printed on the box.
Sound hardware and tuning
Cloud III: larger dynamic drivers and a broad stated range
HyperX lists 53 mm dynamic neodymium drivers and a 10 Hz–21 kHz frequency response for the Cloud III. Those are useful design and specification points: neodymium magnets are common in lightweight dynamic headset drivers, while the stated response extends below and above the nominal range of human hearing. They do not, by themselves, show how evenly the headset plays bass, midrange or treble.

GamesRadar’s October 2026 review characterizes the Cloud III’s sound as balanced. That is an editorial listening impression rather than a controlled laboratory comparison, but it suggests the model is aimed at an even presentation instead of an overtly bass-heavy gaming signature.
Kraken V4 X: TriForce driver architecture
Razer specifies 40 mm TriForce drivers with a 20 Hz–20 kHz response. Razer describes its patented three-part design as separating the driver into sections for highs, mids and lows so the output is more dynamic and less muddy. That is the manufacturer’s explanation of the design, not an independent measurement of tonal accuracy.
The Kraken V4 X also includes 7.1 surround sound. Surround processing can change positional cues in games, but its usefulness depends on the game mix, the platform’s audio settings and whether you prefer processed or stereo sound. Treat it as an optional feature rather than proof that the headset has better imaging.
What the specifications cannot settle
No controlled test in the available evidence measures either model’s frequency-response curve, total distortion, channel balance, latency or passive isolation. You should not infer that the Cloud III automatically sounds better because its driver is larger, or that the Kraken V4 X is more detailed because its driver uses a three-part design. The safest conclusion is that Cloud III has the broader published hardware range and a reported balanced presentation, while Kraken V4 X adds a manufacturer-described driver architecture and selectable surround processing.
Connections and platform coverage
Cloud III: the flexible choice for mixed devices
The Cloud III’s published specification includes both 3.5 mm and USB-A/USB-C connection options. Its compatibility list names PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Mac and mobile devices. That combination is valuable if you move between a controller, a laptop and a desktop, or if you want an analog fallback when a console or phone does not accept a USB headset.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
HyperX explicitly states that the headset is compatible with those platforms. Compatibility still depends on the port and adapter arrangement on your particular device: a phone may require a USB-C audio connection or a suitable 3.5 mm adapter, and console controller support can vary by controller model.
Kraken V4 X: USB-C with Type-A flexibility
Razer’s support documentation identifies the Kraken V4 X as model RZ04-0518 and documents a USB-C connector supplied with a USB Type-A adapter. This lets you plug into a modern USB-C port or a traditional USB-A port without buying a separate adapter.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchRazer markets it as one headset for favorite platforms, but the available specification does not provide the same platform-by-platform list that HyperX publishes. Before ordering, check the exact console, handheld or phone you intend to use and confirm that it accepts USB audio through the included connector arrangement. If you need a guaranteed analog 3.5 mm path, Cloud III is the safer choice because that connection is explicitly part of its specification.
Connection decisions that matter in practice
- Choose 3.5 mm first if you regularly connect to an Xbox or PlayStation controller, a handheld console or an audio jack on a laptop.
- Choose USB if you want a digital connection to a computer and plan to use the headset’s platform software or processing features.
- Check port access on a phone or tablet. A USB-C socket may support charging and data but still require the device’s permission for USB audio.
- Confirm the bundle before buying. Razer’s documented Type-A adapter is part of the Kraken V4 X connection arrangement; regional packages and colorways should be checked on the seller’s listing.
Microphone design and everyday storage
Cloud III: detachable microphone
Cloud III uses a detachable microphone. You can remove it completely for music, travel or single-player sessions, then store it separately when you do not need voice chat. Detachable designs are also replaceable in principle, although the availability and price of replacement parts are not established here.
The practical trade-off is that a detached microphone can be misplaced, and you must reconnect it before joining a call. The physical connection point should be kept free of dust and protected when the microphone is removed.

Kraken V4 X: retractable HyperClear cardioid microphone
The Kraken V4 X has a retractable HyperClear cardioid microphone. It slides into the headset when you are not speaking, so there is no loose part to carry or lose. Retracting the boom is quicker than unplugging a microphone, which is useful if you switch repeatedly between chat and ordinary listening.
“Cardioid” describes the intended pickup pattern: the microphone is designed to emphasize sound from the front and reduce some sound arriving from the sides and rear. It does not guarantee a cleaner recording in every room. Keyboard noise, fan noise, microphone distance and each platform’s voice processing still matter.
Microphone quality: what is and is not known
There is no controlled recording comparison establishing that either microphone is clearer, louder or better at rejecting background noise. Select based on storage preference and connection needs rather than assuming the model with the more elaborate name will sound superior. For competitive voice chat, position either boom close to the corner of your mouth without touching it, and use the game or operating system’s input-level meter to prevent clipping.
Comfort and long-session fit
Cloud III’s reported comfort
GamesRadar’s October 2026 review describes the Cloud III as comfortable. That is a reviewer’s fit assessment, not a universal measurement: head shape, glasses, hair, room temperature and clamp preference all change the result. The review also notes that the $99.99 MSRP is difficult to justify without a discount, which makes comfort more compelling when the headset is on sale than at full list price.
Kraken V4 X fit considerations
The available specifications do not provide a controlled comfort test or a standardized clamp-force, cushion-depth or weight comparison for the Kraken V4 X. You should therefore treat fit as something to verify through the seller’s return policy or an in-person try-on where possible. A retractable microphone keeps the boom out of the way when stored, but it does not determine ear-cup pressure or heat buildup.

Five-minute fit check
- Adjust the headband so the ear cushions surround, rather than press directly on, your ears.
- Wear the headset with your usual glasses, if applicable, for at least 10 minutes.
- Move your head left and right and check whether the cups shift or the cable pulls on one side.
- Play a familiar voice or music track at a moderate volume and check whether you need to tighten the band to maintain a seal.
- Confirm that the microphone can reach your normal speaking position without touching your cheek.
This check cannot replace a long return window, but it catches obvious pressure and cable-routing problems before you commit to a headset.
Software, RGB and surround features
Why the Kraken V4 X suits a Razer setup
Kraken V4 X is the feature-led option. It supports Razer Chroma RGB lighting, integrates with Razer’s software ecosystem and offers 7.1 surround sound. Those features are most useful if you already manage other Chroma devices, want synchronized lighting, or prefer to adjust headset settings from the same desktop application.
RGB has no direct effect on audio quality. It consumes attention and may require software running on a computer, while console use generally depends on the headset’s hardware connection and the console’s own audio controls. If you never use lighting or software profiles, the extra feature set should not outweigh a less suitable connector or a higher price.
Cloud III’s straightforward appeal
The published Cloud III information used here emphasizes drivers, connectors, compatibility and the detachable microphone rather than a specific RGB or surround feature. That makes it easier to evaluate as a conventional wired headset: connect it through the port your device supports and use the platform’s audio controls. Do not assume that the absence of a listed lighting feature means the headset cannot work with software; it means a particular RGB or surround capability is not established in the specification available for this comparison.
Build details and warranty
Cloud III’s warranty advantage
HyperX lists a two-year warranty for the Cloud III. A longer stated coverage period can reduce the risk of paying for a repair or replacement if a covered defect appears after the retailer’s return period. Read the regional warranty terms, exclusions and proof-of-purchase requirements because coverage can differ by country and seller.

Kraken V4 X documentation
Razer’s support page identifies the Kraken V4 X as RZ04-0518 and documents the USB-C connector and Type-A adapter. The available product information does not state a comparable warranty duration. Verify the warranty for your region before purchase, especially when buying from a marketplace seller rather than the manufacturer or an authorized retailer.
Durability habits for either model
- Disconnect by gripping the plug or adapter, not the cable.
- Keep the microphone connector or retractable boom free of grit.
- Store the headset on a stand or flat surface instead of hanging it from the cable.
- Do not force a USB-C plug at an angle; intermittent digital audio is often a connector or port problem.
- Save the receipt and serial-number information while the warranty is active.
Price and value in 2026

The two models were close in one 2026 promotion, with the Cloud III at about $57.99 and Kraken V4 X at $59.99. Those figures are editorially observed deal prices, not controlled testing and not a guarantee that the same offer remains available. HyperX’s $69.99 displayed sale price and $99.99 MSRP likewise describe the US product page at the time it was indexed.
At roughly the same sale price, Cloud III gives you the broader published platform list, analog support, a detachable microphone and a two-year warranty. Kraken V4 X earns its value through Chroma RGB, retractable microphone storage, Razer software integration and USB-C/USB-A operation. Compare the live checkout total, shipping, taxes, seller status and return period rather than relying on an old deal headline.

Which headset should you buy?
Pick the HyperX Cloud III when these priorities match
- You need both 3.5 mm and USB connection choices.
- You use several platforms listed by HyperX, including Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Mac and mobile.
- You want a microphone that can be removed completely.
- You value a two-year stated warranty.
- You are buying during a discount and want the strongest specification set per dollar.
- You prefer the balanced sound impression reported by GamesRadar over a feature-heavy software package.
Pick the Razer Kraken V4 X when these priorities match
- You want Chroma RGB lighting synchronized with other Razer devices.
- You prefer a microphone that retracts into the headset instead of detaching.
- You use or plan to use Razer software on a computer.
- You specifically want 7.1 surround processing as an available mode.
- Your devices have USB-C or USB-A ports and you do not require a documented 3.5 mm connection.
Use price as the tie-breaker, not the headline
If both are within a few dollars, choose based on the connector and microphone design you will use every day. If one is substantially cheaper, make sure the lower price does not come from a different colorway, an open-box listing, a missing adapter or a seller with weaker returns. The Cloud III’s list-price value improves significantly when discounted; the Kraken V4 X can be the smarter purchase when its software and lighting features would otherwise require separate accessories or a different headset.
Setup guide for a new owner
Cloud III on a computer
- Choose the USB connection for a digital computer setup, or plug the 3.5 mm connection into the computer’s compatible headset jack.
- Open the operating system’s sound settings and select the Cloud III as the output and, when attached, the microphone input.
- Run the input meter while speaking normally. Lower the input level if your voice peaks or clips.
- In each game or chat application, select the same output and microphone instead of leaving a previously used device selected.
- For a console, connect through the supported controller or console port and confirm that the console shows the headset as the active output.
Kraken V4 X on a computer
- Insert the headset’s USB-C connector into a compatible USB-C port, or use the supplied USB Type-A adapter for a USB-A port.
- Wait for the operating system to recognize the USB audio device, then select it for playback and microphone input.
- Install or open Razer’s software only if you want Chroma lighting, surround or other available controls.
- Test stereo first. If you enable 7.1 surround, compare it in the games you actually play and keep the mode that gives you clearer positional cues.
- For consoles and handhelds, verify USB-audio support and port compatibility before assuming the adapter will work in every mode.
Important limits of this comparison
The available evidence supports a specification and buying decision, not a laboratory winner. There is no controlled head-to-head test of frequency response, latency, isolation, microphone recordings or long-term durability. GamesRadar’s comfort and balanced-sound comments about Cloud III and PC Gamer’s 2026 deal prices are time-specific editorial observations. They should inform your decision, not be treated as universal measurements.
Regional bundles, firmware, colorways, retailer stock and warranty terms can change. Before paying, verify the exact model name, connector package, included adapter, current price, seller, return window and warranty for your country.
Bottom line
Buy the HyperX Cloud III for the safer all-round recommendation: it combines the wider published compatibility list, analog and USB options, detachable microphone, two-year warranty and strong sale pricing. Buy the Razer Kraken V4 X when retractable microphone storage, Chroma RGB, Razer software or USB-C/USB-A operation are the features that will genuinely improve your setup. Neither model has a proven objective sound or microphone advantage without controlled testing, so let your devices, feature preferences and live price decide.
