Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) launched in the United States on September 17, 2025, with a starting price of $379. Meta advertises up to eight hours of moderate use—about twice the original model’s roughly four-hour rating—but the improvement is smaller for continuous audio and calls. Gen 2 also adds 3K video, and it remains a display-free pair of camera-and-audio glasses that requires a compatible phone, the Meta AI app, and a Meta account.

The $379 price is an entry price for basic frame and lens configurations, not necessarily the price of prescription or upgraded lenses. Here’s what the battery figures mean, what else changed, and what to check before buying.

What the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 upgrade changes

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is an evolution of the display-free glasses platform, not a phone replacement or an in-lens augmented-reality display. It combines a camera, open-ear speakers, microphones, and Meta AI features that work with a phone and companion app.

The principal hardware changes are longer advertised battery life and higher-resolution capture. Meta says Gen 2 records 3K Ultra HD video. Ray-Ban’s FAQ lists still-image resolution of 2203 × 2938 pixels (6.5 megapixels), compared with 1360 × 1880 pixels (2.6 megapixels) for the previous model. Meta also announced features such as conversation focus and expanded live translation; availability can depend on country, language, account, app, firmware, and rollout.

Frame families include Wayfarer, Headliner, and Skyler, with different colors and lens configurations. Prescription options are available for some configurations, but buyers should confirm compatibility and price for their exact frame and prescription.

Price and value: what $379 means

The US starting price is $379 for basic frame and lens configurations. Prescription, Transitions, polarized, specialty, and upgraded optical options can cost more. Compare the total configured price rather than assuming every version costs $379. Ray-Ban’s Gen 2 Headliner listing also states that a Meta account and the Meta AI app are required.

Ray-Ban’s product pages and retailer listings may describe included accessories and case capacity differently by configuration. Check the exact listing for what comes in the box. Best Buy advertises up to 48 additional hours from the charging case on one listing; treat that as a retailer- and configuration-specific claim, not a guaranteed runtime for every purchase.

The original model may be a less expensive option if available at a substantial discount and you mainly want occasional hands-free photos and audio. The Associated Press reported a $299 price for the previous model when Gen 2 launched; current pricing and availability can differ.

Battery life: interpreting the up-to-2x claim

The “2x” headline applies most directly to the manufacturer’s moderate-use figure. It does not mean twice the runtime for every activity. Ray-Ban’s published figures distinguish mixed or moderate use from continuous audio, calls, and standby.

Battery measure Original Ray-Ban Meta Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2
Moderate-use claim Up to about 4 hours Up to 8 hours
Continuous audio About 3.5 hours Up to 5 hours
Calling About 4 hours About 5.3 hours in Ray-Ban’s FAQ; another Ray-Ban page says 5.5 hours
Standby About 12.5 hours Up to 19 hours

These are manufacturer figures, not independent test results. The eight-hour figure is an “up to” moderate-use claim; continuous listening, calls, camera recording, streaming, AI use, temperature, and network conditions can change runtime. Ray-Ban’s FAQ is the source for the activity-specific figures and gives two different calling figures across its pages.

What changes day to day

Intermittent photos, short videos, occasional AI questions, moderate listening, and short calls are more consistent with mixed use than continuous activity. Long listening sessions, repeated calls, frequent recording, live streaming, or heavy AI use can mean more frequent charging. Weak wireless conditions and very hot or cold temperatures can also affect battery performance; Ray-Ban warns that temperature extremes can permanently shorten battery life.

Gen 2 may last through a normal day for some workloads, but the eight-hour claim does not guarantee all-day use. The charging case provides a way to recharge away from a wall outlet; check the case and charging details for the specific configuration.

Charging and battery care

Use the supplied charging case and follow the product instructions for charging. Ray-Ban says a USB-C charging plug is needed when charging from a wall outlet. Avoid exposing the glasses to temperature extremes, which Ray-Ban says can harm battery longevity. If runtime is unexpectedly short, first compare your use with the published activity-specific figures and check that both glasses and case are charged.

Setup prerequisites

These glasses are not fully standalone. Setup and connected functions depend on a compatible smartphone, the Meta AI app, a Meta account, and wireless internet access. Calling, syncing, AI, and translation features may also depend on phone connectivity, region, language, and feature rollout.

Ray-Ban lists Android 10 or later and iOS 14.4 or later as baseline phone requirements, with location services required on Android. Requirements can change, so check Ray-Ban’s current compatibility FAQ and the app listing before purchase.

How to set up Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2

Use the current in-app setup flow rather than relying on a fixed sequence of menu names, which can change with app updates.

  1. Confirm that your phone meets the current compatibility requirements and has internet access.
  2. Install the Meta AI app and sign in to or create a Meta account.
  3. Charge the glasses and case, then follow the app’s prompts to add and pair the glasses.
  4. Grant the requested Bluetooth, location, microphone, and other permissions needed for the features you plan to use.
  5. Check the app for available glasses software updates and install them as directed.

If pairing fails, check phone compatibility, app sign-in, Bluetooth and location permissions, internet access, and the charge level. Follow current Ray-Ban or Meta support guidance for further troubleshooting rather than assuming a particular button sequence.

What Gen 2 is—and is not

Gen 2 has no in-lens display. Spoken responses come through open-ear speakers; it does not provide visual navigation overlays, captions, or text notifications in the lens. Meta’s separate Ray-Ban Display is a different, higher-priced product category; Meta announced it separately, and the Associated Press reported a $799 price for that product.

Choose Gen 2 for camera capture, voice AI, calls, and open-ear audio in familiar eyewear styles. If you specifically need visual information in your field of view, compare display glasses instead. For audio alone, earbuds or other audio-focused devices may be a better fit; for sports, compare products designed for that use.

Prescription, privacy, and everyday use

Ray-Ban offers prescription options for Gen 2, but availability depends on the exact frame and prescription. Prescription, progressive, polarized, and photochromic lens options can affect the final price and may not be offered for every configuration. Confirm compatibility and pricing with an authorized optical provider before ordering; buying the intended configuration initially may be simpler than replacing lenses later.

The glasses have an external-facing capture LED intended to indicate recording. It is a privacy signal, not a guarantee that everyone nearby will notice or understand it. Ask permission before recording people in sensitive settings, follow camera restrictions, and consider whether recording is appropriate in the situation. Check Meta’s privacy documentation and account settings for data-handling details.

Do not assume that every frame has the same water resistance, comfort, or durability. Verify the rating, care instructions, and warranty terms for the exact model; the available battery information does not establish a universal water or liquid-damage claim.

Who should buy these glasses

Gen 2 is most compelling for someone who wants camera capture, open-ear audio, calls, and voice AI in a daily-wear frame—and values more runtime and higher-resolution capture than the original. It is less suitable if you need a visual display, a fully standalone device, or long sessions of continuous recording or listening without recharging.

Consider Gen 2 if you want

  • Hands-free photos and 3K video capture.
  • Open-ear audio and calling in a familiar eyewear style.
  • Voice AI features, subject to app, account, network, and regional availability.
  • Prescription lenses, if the exact frame supports your prescription.

Consider another option if you need

  • An in-lens display, visual navigation, or captions.
  • A standalone device that does not rely on a phone, app, and account.
  • Long continuous audio or recording sessions without charging.
  • Audio-only use, where a dedicated audio product may be a better match.

Alternatives to consider

The original Ray-Ban Meta may make more sense if its current price is substantially lower and you do not need Gen 2’s battery and camera improvements. Compare actual configured prices and availability, not a launch-era price alone.

For visual overlays, consider a display-glasses product rather than Gen 2. For sports use or audio alone, compare products designed specifically for those needs, including their fit, battery claims, and phone requirements.

FAQ

Does Gen 2 really have twice the battery life?

Meta advertises up to eight hours of moderate use versus about four hours for the original. That comparison does not apply to every activity: Ray-Ban lists up to five hours of continuous audio for Gen 2, and its calling figures are about 5.3 or 5.5 hours depending on the page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 last all day?

Possibly, depending on use. Intermittent mixed use is different from continuous audio, frequent calls, heavy AI use, or repeated video recording. Treat the published figures as manufacturer claims, not a guarantee for your routine.

What does the $379 price include?

$379 is the US starting price for basic frame and lens configurations. Prescription, Transitions, polarized, specialty, and upgraded optical options may cost extra. Check the exact listing for the included lenses, charging case, and configured total.

Do the glasses have a display?

No. Gen 2 is a display-free camera-and-audio product. It provides spoken responses through open-ear speakers rather than text or visual overlays in the lens.

Do I need a phone and Meta account?

Yes. Ray-Ban lists a compatible smartphone, the Meta AI app, and a Meta account as requirements. Connected features also rely on internet access, and availability can vary by region and feature rollout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I get prescription lenses?

Prescription options are available for some Gen 2 configurations. Check the exact frame and prescription with an authorized optical provider; availability and price vary by lens type and prescription.

Does the recording light guarantee privacy?

No. The external-facing capture LED is intended to signal recording, but people nearby may not notice or understand it. Ask permission where appropriate and follow local rules and venue restrictions.

Bottom line

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 starts at $379 in the United States and improves on the original with up to eight hours of manufacturer-rated moderate use and 3K video. The “2x” battery headline is most relevant to that mixed-use rating; continuous audio and calling gains are smaller, and real runtime depends on workload and conditions.

It is a better fit for buyers who want camera, audio, and voice AI in everyday eyewear than for anyone seeking an in-lens display or a phone-free device. Before buying, compare the full price of your chosen lens configuration, confirm phone and app compatibility, and consider whether its recording features suit your privacy needs.
