PS5 Pro has additional reported mode options, so first check which console you are using.
Which graphics mode should you choose?
The practical choice is between prioritizing visual detail and targeting a higher frame rate. All three standard-PS5 modes have a clear trade-off:

| Mode | Priority and target | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Fidelity | Higher visual detail, enhanced lighting and ray tracing; 30 fps target. | You value visual effects more than a 60 fps target. |
| Performance | Smoother play; 60 fps target without ray tracing. | You prefer the 60 fps target and are willing to forgo ray tracing. |
| Performance RT | 60 fps target with ray tracing, trading resolution for the effects. | You want ray tracing while retaining the Performance modes’ target. |
For most players who prioritize responsiveness, Performance is the straightforward option. Choose Performance RT if ray tracing matters to you, or Fidelity if you would rather emphasize image detail than target 60 fps. The PlayStation Store describes the game as using enhanced lighting and ray tracing with “crisp, dynamic 4K and HDR”; that is promotional product wording, not a promise of native 4K output in every mode or scene (PlayStation Store listing).

Digital Foundry’s launch-period analysis, published June 11, 2021, reported these dynamic-resolution ranges for the three base-PS5 modes. They are measurements from that analysis—not official fixed output specifications or guarantees for every scene and current game version (Digital Foundry’s mode analysis).

- The intergalactic adventurers are back with Ratchet & Clank: Rift apart. Help them stop a robotic Emperor intent on conquering cross-dimensional worlds, with their own universe next in line.
- Built from the ground up by acclaimed studio insomniac games, go above and beyond with the mind-blowing speed and immersive features of the PS5 Console.
- Brand-new haptic feedback and adaptive trigger Technology creates astonishing physical sensations, bringing in-game actions to life in your hands via the dual sense wireless Controller.
| Mode | Digital Foundry’s reported range and target (2021 analysis) |
|---|---|
| Fidelity | Dynamic 1800p–4K; 30 fps target with ray tracing. |
| Performance | Dynamic 1620p–1800p; 60 fps target without ray tracing. |
| Performance RT | Dynamic 1080p–1440p; 60 fps target with ray tracing. |
These ranges explain why it is misleading to describe a mode simply as “native 4K.” Resolution can vary dynamically, and the published analysis is from 2021. PlayStation’s product page also describes an optional Performance Mode targeting 60 fps, but that does not turn dynamic resolution into a fixed native-resolution specification (PlayStation Store listing).
What do ray tracing and the Performance modes change?
Ray tracing contributes to the game’s lighting and visual effects. Fidelity pairs it with the lower 30 fps target; Performance RT retains it while targeting 60 fps by accepting a lower dynamic-resolution range. Standard Performance targets 60 fps without ray tracing. The choice is therefore not “ray tracing or no ray tracing” alone: Fidelity also emphasizes visual detail, while Performance RT is the option for players seeking both ray tracing and a 60 fps target.

Does 120 Hz or VRR change the frame rate?
It can, if the display, game, and system support and enable the relevant features. Insomniac Games Support says its PS5 titles support VRR with the latest game and system updates. With a display that accepts 120 Hz input, the game’s 120 Hz Display Mode active, and VRR enabled, the game can deliver a variable, uncapped frame rate that exceeds the selected mode’s 30 or 60 fps target by 50% or more, depending on gameplay. This is conditional behavior, not a fixed frame-rate promise (Insomniac Games Support: “What is VRR support?”).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Your display must support VRR and 120 Hz input for the described combination.
- Some displays require VRR to be enabled for the specific input as well as on the console.
- The variable rate depends on gameplay; do not treat the potential increase as a guaranteed result in every scene.
Which options are available on PS5 Pro?
PS5 Pro mode labels should not be mixed up with the three standard-PS5 choices. PSFoundry’s overview lists four Pro options and gives broad targets, but these are secondary-source figures rather than a detailed official specification. The source does not establish a patch-by-patch audit, so treat the resolutions as reported summaries, not guarantees (PSFoundry’s overview).

| PS5 Pro mode | Broad target reported by PSFoundry |
|---|---|
| Performance Pro | 60 fps target at 4K. |
| Performance RT | 60 fps target at 1440p. |
| Performance | 60 fps target at 1800p. |
| Fidelity | 30 fps target at 4K. |
These Pro summaries are not interchangeable with Digital Foundry’s 2021 measurements for the standard PS5. If you are comparing a specific Pro mode or patch, check the current in-game options and treat exact resolution behavior as version-dependent unless current official detail confirms it.
Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Identify your console. The familiar Fidelity, Performance, and Performance RT comparison is for standard PS5; PS5 Pro has additional reported choices.
- Pick your frame-rate priority. Choose Fidelity for a 30 fps target and visual detail, or one of the Performance modes for a 60 fps target.
- Decide how much ray tracing matters. On standard PS5, Performance RT keeps ray tracing at a reduced resolution; standard Performance omits it.
- Check your display features. 120 Hz input and VRR can affect the delivered frame rate when the required settings are active, but do not guarantee a constant rate above the mode target.
