Plain yogurt or Greek yogurt is the best-supported direct substitute for sour cream in mashed potatoes: both appear as options in Food Network recipes. Choose plain yogurt for a softer tang, Greek yogurt for a thicker result, or another option below based on whether you want more tang, richness, or simply have a different dairy ingredient on hand. Stir substitutes in gradually, taste, and adjust the texture before adding more.
Which sour cream substitute should you choose?
| Substitute | Tang | Texture and richness | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain yogurt | Tangy, generally a close match | Creamy; may be looser than sour cream | You want the closest broadly supported swap |
| Greek yogurt | Tangy | Thicker than many plain yogurts | You want a thicker texture or already have it |
| Buttermilk | Pronounced | Adds liquid; can loosen the potatoes | You want tang and can add it cautiously |
| Milk or half-and-half | Little or no sour-cream-like tang | Adds moisture and, especially with half-and-half, richness | Your priority is creaminess rather than tang |
| Cream cheese | Not established as a sour-cream-like tang substitute | Richer and thicker | You want a richer result and can adjust by taste |
The distinctions are practical rather than fixed: potato variety, cooking method, and the other ingredients affect how much liquid the mash can take. No universal one-for-one conversion is established for these options.

How to use each substitute
Plain yogurt or Greek yogurt
Start with plain, unsweetened yogurt. Add it a little at a time, fold it through, and taste. Greek yogurt is thicker than many plain yogurts; if the mash becomes too dense, loosen it with a small splash of milk. Food Network includes plain yogurt among the dairy choices in a mix-and-match mashed-potato formula, and another recipe lists Greek yogurt as an alternative to sour cream.
The quantities in those recipes are not interchangeable rules: Food Network Magazine’s mix-and-match formula pairs 1 1/2 cups of plain yogurt or sour cream with 2 pounds of potatoes, while a separate Food Network recipe pairs 1/2 cup of sour cream or Greek yogurt with 4 pounds of Yukon Gold potatoes. The recipes use different formulations, so follow a recipe you are making rather than treating either amount as a general conversion.

Buttermilk
Buttermilk brings tang, but it is also thinner than yogurt or sour cream, so use small additions and check the consistency as you go. In Food Network Kitchen’s lighter mashed-potato recipe, developer Amy Stevenson said the team tried buttermilk and light sour cream for tanginess, then chose sour cream because it added both tang and creaminess. She described buttermilk in that particular recipe as “a bit overwhelming.” That is a recipe-specific judgment, not a rule that buttermilk will overpower every batch.
Milk or half-and-half
Use milk or half-and-half when the potatoes need moisture or you want a creamier mash but do not need sour cream’s tang. Pour in a little, mix, and reassess before adding more: too much liquid can make mashed potatoes loose. Food Network’s mix-and-match guide lists both as dairy options.

- Pure & Natural
- No artificial additives or preservatives
- No spoon required / perfect for topping
- Easy to use & minimal waste
- No rBST* - No significant difference has been shown between milk derived from rBST-treated cows and non-rBST-treated cows.
Cream cheese
Cream cheese can make mashed potatoes richer and thicker. Food Network uses it in a sour-cream mashed-potato recipe alongside sour cream, but that recipe does not establish a direct replacement amount. Add it cautiously and adjust the rest of the liquid to the texture you want rather than assuming it replaces sour cream cup for cup.

How to keep the texture right
- Add gradually: Mix in a small amount of your chosen substitute, then taste and check whether the potatoes need more.
- Adjust thickness: If the mash is too thick, add milk a splash at a time. If it is already loose, avoid adding more thin liquid.
- Use a pourable consistency when appropriate: For non-baking uses such as mashed potatoes, Food Network’s substitution guide suggests thinning yogurt, sour cream, or kefir with enough milk or water to reach a pourable heavy-cream consistency.
- Balance the flavor: If tang is the goal, yogurt or a restrained amount of buttermilk is more suitable than milk or half-and-half. Taste before adding more, especially with buttermilk.
What if you need a dairy-free substitute?
The recipe and substitution guidance cited here covers dairy ingredients; it does not establish a dairy-free replacement or a reliable conversion for one. If dairy-free cooking is required, use a recipe specifically developed and tested for that constraint rather than assuming a dairy product swap will work.
