Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your Raspberry Pi YouTube stream keeps restarting, first find out why the service process exits. Check the unit’s status and journal, inspect the command and runtime settings systemd actually uses, then fix the logged cause. A service that says “active” is not necessarily sending usable video to YouTube, so verify the broadcast separately.
1. Capture the failure before changing anything
Use your actual systemd unit name in place of youtube-stream.service below. These commands are examples for a system service; add sudo if your account needs elevated privileges.

Find the first failure in the sequence, not just the latest “Started” message. Note the exit code, signal, timeout, and any encoder or network error around that time.
Raspberry Pi’s Connect troubleshooting documentation uses the same basic approach—inspect a service’s status and journal—although its examples concern Connect services, not YouTube streaming. A repeated “Started” line alone does not explain why the process stopped.
2. Check the unit systemd is running
Inspect the effective unit and any drop-in overrides rather than relying on a remembered copy of the file:

sudo systemctl cat youtube-stream.service
Review these settings and the paths they reference:
ExecStart: the executable, script, arguments, input, and output destination.User: the account running the encoder.WorkingDirectory: the directory used when relative paths are supplied.EnvironmentandEnvironmentFile: values the command requires, including the location and permissions of any environment file.
A command that succeeds in an interactive SSH shell can fail as a service because it runs under a different user, working directory, environment, or permissions. If you reproduce the command manually, use the service’s user and the same input files and environment. Keep stream keys private: do not paste them into public posts, screenshots, or logs.
3. Match the journal message to the likely cause
Treat these as diagnostic leads, not assumptions. Use the exact error in the journal and encoder output to decide what to change.

| Evidence to look for | What to check |
|---|---|
| “No such file or directory,” or an executable/script cannot be found | Confirm the paths in ExecStart and any referenced input exist, are spelled correctly, and are accessible from the service’s working directory. |
| Permission denied | Check ownership and read/execute access for the service user on the executable, media, configuration, and any device or destination the command uses. |
| Invalid option, argument, or command syntax | Compare the arguments in ExecStart with the encoder’s accepted options and inspect quoting or shell assumptions. systemd does not automatically give a service the same interactive shell environment. |
| Input or capture source is missing or unavailable | Verify that the named media file, camera, or other input exists and that the service account can access it. The correct check depends on whether the stream uses a file or a live capture source. |
| Missing configuration or environment value | Check that the expected environment file is present and readable by the service, and that required variable names are set. Do not expose a stream key while diagnosing this. |
| Network, encoder, or ingest error | Read the encoder’s own messages and check the connection and stream configuration. A network or remote ingest problem is not fixed simply by making systemd restart faster. |
| Timeout or process killed by a signal | Use the journal’s exact result and timing to determine whether the command stalled, was stopped externally, or exceeded a configured timeout. Do not infer the cause from the restart alone. |
4. Choose a restart policy that matches the process
Restart= controls what systemd does after a process exits; it does not correct a broken command, missing input, or failed connection. The systemd service manual identifies Restart=no as the default. Restart=on-failure restarts defined failures, while Restart=always also restarts after a clean exit. For a long-running encoder, failure-only behavior is often easier to reason about when a clean exit should stay stopped; whether that is right depends on what a clean exit means for your stream.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf you edit a unit, change only the settings you intend to change. RestartSec= can space out attempts when a delay is appropriate, but it will not solve a persistent error. Repeated attempts can also hit systemd’s start-rate limit. Check the reported result and the unit’s configured limits instead of treating a rate-limit reset as a repair.
5. Reload, restart, and inspect fresh results
After changing a unit file or drop-in, reload systemd’s unit configuration before restarting the service:

- 【 Support Dual 4Kp60 Display 】Each of the two microHDMI sockets can control a 4K display at 60 Hertz, now support HDR, offering super HD video for media streaming projects. RPi 5 is the first RPi model that comes with a PCI Express port (PCIe 2.0 x1 with 500 MB/s) to attach SSDs (requires separate M.2 HAT).
- 【 Excellent Chips And Applications】Pi 5 is a full-size Pi computer using silicon built in-house at Pi. The RP1 “southbridge” provides the bulk of the I/O capabilities for Pi 5. Pi 5 is more friendly and convenient in the development of Internet of Things, Web development, machine identification, automatic control and other electronic equipment applications and network.
- 【 Faster CPU, Better GPU 】 Pi 5 features a Broadcom BCM2712 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz, it delivers a 2–3× increase in CPU performance relative to RaspberryPi 4. The 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU is compatible to OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2, substantial uplift in graphics performance. Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
If systemd reports that the start limit was reached, inspect the failure that preceded it and the configured rate limits. Clearing a failed state may permit another attempt, but it does not address the underlying cause.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Verify YouTube is receiving a healthy stream
Systemd reports process state, not broadcast quality. The encoder can remain active while its input is absent, its output is invalid, or YouTube is not receiving the stream. Check the encoder’s output for continuing errors and inspect the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the intended source is present and that the broadcast status is healthy.
If the service repeatedly starts but no usable broadcast appears, investigate the command, input, and stream configuration shown by the logs. Do not assume that a running process means the stream key or ingest connection is correct.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud rather than from your Raspberry Pi. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
