The reliable fix is a rehearsed backup encoder—not a YouTube setting that restarts OBS. Prepare a second computer or a cloud continuity path to send a holding slide or alternate church feed, then test the handoff on your actual channel. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls affect stream behavior; they do not relaunch a crashed OBS process.
What to do when OBS crashes
First identify what failed: the OBS process, the computer, the internet connection, or YouTube’s ingest. If OBS alone stopped and the host is healthy, activate the prepared backup encoder or cloud workflow. If the machine or connection is down, a backup sharing that same power or network may not help.

- Confirm the failure. Have the operator check whether OBS closed or froze, the computer lost power, or the internet path failed. Do not repeatedly start encoders without checking which system is sending.
- Activate the rehearsed backup. Start the second encoder or cloud continuity workflow with the agreed holding scene, recorded program, or alternate live feed.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that an incoming signal and preview appear, and review stream-health messages. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during the event: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Hand back deliberately. Once the primary system is stable, follow the team’s tested hand-back procedure. If the event ended or a new event is required, select the correct scheduled event and stream settings; do not assume the old viewer URL remains valid after a long interruption.
- Record the incident. Save OBS logs and note the time, symptoms, network state, and recovery action. For dropped frames or disconnections, use the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide.
Prepare a backup before the service
Choose what viewers should see
Agree on the fallback experience: a holding slide with silence, a recorded worship or sermon loop, or an alternate live program. Decide who activates it and what viewers should hear while the primary system is restored.

Configure an independent sender
A second computer running OBS or another compatible encoder can send the backup scene or program. A cloud continuity service is another possible architecture. The OBS community has discussed both approaches, but that discussion is not a YouTube guarantee of automatic or seamless failover: Creating a 24/7 church sermon and worship channel.

Document the primary and backup configurations securely. YouTube describes stream keys as credentials that tell the encoder where to send the feed. Treat them as account secrets; if using a reusable custom key, ensure the backup is authorized and configured for it. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options let encoder activity start or stop the YouTube stream when enabled, but they do not monitor OBS or restart a crashed process. See Manage live stream settings.
Do not assume that two encoders automatically take turns because they share a key or event. Configure and test the exact handoff. A YouTube backup ingestion URL is also only a connection detail: it does not supply an encoder or recovery plan.

Run a realistic rehearsal
YouTube recommends testing before going live with representative movement and audio, then monitoring stream health and messages. Use speaking, music, camera motion, and transitions to silence in the rehearsal. Check the Live Control Room preview and the public viewer experience for picture, audio, latency, and recovery behavior. Where appropriate, rehearse on a private, unlisted, or otherwise controlled event.

For transport to YouTube, its encoder guidance recommends RTMPS. Use the bitrate row for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate, and leave headroom for real network conditions. For example, YouTube lists 6 Mbps as the minimum and 17 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 60 fps; those are ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that a church connection can sustain them. The same guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Diagnose the failure before changing settings
OBS closed or froze, but the computer and network are working
This is a process-recovery problem. A watchdog or operating-system task might relaunch OBS, but relaunching on the same computer is not true failover: viewers may see an interruption, and the approach cannot help if the host computer fails. No official OBS crash-watchdog setup is established by the sources cited here. Use a tested independent sender for stronger coverage.
OBS is running, but frames drop or the connection disconnects
This points to the connection between the computer and ingest server rather than an OBS process crash. OBS says dropped frames can mean the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends matching bitrate to stable upload capacity, using wired networking, and checking network software, drivers, modem/router, cables, and other network devices: Stream Connection Troubleshooting. These steps address connectivity; they do not relaunch OBS.

The computer or power fails
A second encoder only helps if it has sufficiently independent power and network access. A UPS may bridge a brief local power interruption, but the required capacity depends on the equipment and no particular specification is established here. A backup on the same failed computer is not a backup.
The internet connection or YouTube ingest is unavailable
A second encoder using the same internet route will not resolve a shared network outage. Consider an independently routed connection or provider-side continuity only after weighing cost and the church’s tolerance for a visible interruption. Neither approach guarantees uninterrupted viewing.

Compare recovery options by the failure they cover
StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider for a prerecorded, always-on YouTube channel: it loops uploaded video from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. It is not a camera-based live-production encoder; see the cloud block below to check whether that fits your church’s program.
| Approach | Can help with | Limits to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Relaunch OBS on the same computer | OBS process termination while the host, power, and network remain healthy | May cause a visible interruption; does not cover host, power, or network failure; requires monitoring and testing |
| Second computer as backup encoder | Primary computer crash or maintenance, if the backup is ready and can reach YouTube | Requires configuration and an operator or tested switching automation; shared power and network failures remain |
| Cloud restream or failover service | May keep an outgoing stream or holding graphic active when the local feed disappears | Adds a provider, configuration, and possible cost; verify handoff and event/URL behavior. Community discussion is not a guarantee for a particular service |
| YouTube backup ingestion endpoint | An alternate ingestion path when the encoder and platform workflow support it | Does not restart OBS; protocol and encoder capabilities must match |
| SRT/RIST relay architecture | Some transport resilience through a suitable relay design | Advanced and more complex; does not by itself solve an OBS process crash, and relay bandwidth can add cost |
YouTube’s HLS stream setup instructions require an HLS-capable encoder, provide a backup server URL when backup ingestion is needed, and note higher latency than RTMP. The backup URL does not restart a crashed encoder. OBS’s SRT or RIST technical guide discusses transport and relay designs, with added complexity and possible bandwidth cost.
Before choosing, compare failure coverage (process, computer, power, internet, or platform), recovery time, viewer continuity and URL behavior, backup independence, operator workload, and recurring cost. Those outcomes depend on the church’s configuration; rehearse rather than assume.

StreamNeo is designed to keep an uploaded video or playlist looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream. It is not a live camera encoder, so it fits a prerecorded church channel or a prepared recorded fallback—not a direct replacement for a live sanctuary camera feed.
- Upload the recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the content from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
