A Raspberry Pi sending a live stream to YouTube uses about 324 GB per month for every 1 Mbps of sustained outgoing bitrate if it streams continuously for 30 days. So a 4 Mbps stream works out to about 1,296 GB (1.3 TB, decimal) before overhead. Your actual monthly total depends mainly on the stream’s bitrate and how many hours it runs; Indian broadband limits and post-limit speeds depend on your specific plan.
Estimate monthly upload data from the Pi
Use this estimate for data sent from a Raspberry Pi to YouTube, not for watching YouTube on the Pi:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Monthly GB ≈ outgoing bitrate in Mbps × hours streamed × 0.45
This is payload arithmetic using decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), not a measurement from a Raspberry Pi or an ISP account. It assumes the stated bitrate is sustained for the full streaming period and excludes overhead.

- Find the stream’s configured outgoing bitrate in Mbps. If video and audio bitrates are configured separately, use their total.
- Multiply by the total hours you expect to stream during the month. For a 30-day month at 24 hours per day, that is 720 hours.
- Multiply the result by 0.45 to estimate decimal GB.
Examples for a 30-day month
| Outgoing bitrate | Streaming schedule | Estimated upload data |
|---|---|---|
| 3 Mbps | 24 hours/day | About 972 GB |
| 4 Mbps | 24 hours/day | About 1,296 GB (1.3 TB) |
| 5 Mbps | 24 hours/day | About 1,620 GB (1.62 TB) |
| 8 Mbps | 24 hours/day | About 2,592 GB (2.6 TB) |
| 14 Mbps | 24 hours/day | About 4,536 GB (4.54 TB) |
| 4 Mbps | 6 hours/day | About 324 GB |
These figures are derived estimates before overhead. Retries, protocol traffic, other services using the Pi’s connection, and the provider’s accounting can affect reported usage. The sources do not establish a universal adjustment factor, so compare the estimate with your broadband account’s actual usage rather than adding an assumed percentage.
Choose the right bitrate for the stream
The estimate should use the configured outgoing bitrate, not a playback speed or the Raspberry Pi’s model name. Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation describes bitrate as the target H.264 encoder setting that affects output size, and gives a 10,000,000 bit/s example; it also includes Pi 5-specific streaming pipeline guidance. That documentation does not set one monthly data figure or guarantee a particular setup’s stability. See Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends the following H.264 bitrates for these example settings:
Recommended Free Tools
| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended encoder bitrate | Estimated upload if streamed 24/7 for 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| 480p30 | 3 Mbps | About 972 GB |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | About 2,592 GB (2.6 TB) |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | About 1,620 GB (1.62 TB) |
| 1080p60 | 14 Mbps | About 4,536 GB (4.54 TB) |
The monthly figures apply the same 30-day, continuous-streaming estimate to YouTube’s recommended encoder settings; they are not measured usage. YouTube’s settings table also gives minimum rates. Resolution, frame rate, codec, and the connection’s capacity all matter, so use the rate actually configured for your stream when you know it. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), RTMP or RTMPS, and a two-second keyframe interval. Its guidance is to choose a quality that your internet connection can deliver reliably and test before an event. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Do not use playback guidance as an upload estimate
YouTube’s recommended sustained speeds for watching are 5 Mbps for 1080p and 20 Mbps for 4K UHD. Those are playback recommendations, not monthly data totals and not the encoder upload rate for a live stream. See YouTube system requirements and supported devices.
Check the Indian broadband plan, not just its advertised speed
India has no single broadband data allowance or upload speed that applies to every customer. TRAI says providers must clearly specify the fair usage policy (FUP) limit on unlimited plans and the speed after that limit is exhausted. It also says it does not prescribe a minimum broadband upload or download speed; providers must indicate typical speeds in tariff offerings. See TRAI’s Broadband FAQ, last updated 1 October 2026.

Compare the allowance with your estimated upload total, leaving room for normal household use and variation in actual accounting. An advertised download speed alone does not establish that a connection can sustain the stream’s outgoing bitrate.

Streaming live from a Pi is different from watching YouTube on it
When the Pi sends a live feed, outgoing bitrate multiplied by streaming hours is the useful starting point. When someone watches YouTube on the Pi, data use depends on the selected playback resolution and viewing time. Do not apply the live encoder bitrate formula to viewing: playback has its own bandwidth guidance, and the cited YouTube playback rates are not monthly-use measurements.
Keep a 24/7 YouTube stream running
If your goal is continuous pre-recorded video rather than a live camera feed, a Pi can send the stream while it and the broadband connection remain on. That means sustained upload use: at 4 Mbps, the 30-day estimate is about 1,296 GB before overhead. Confirm both the data allowance and reliable upload capacity before committing to a continuous schedule.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist streaming to YouTube from the cloud: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery can restart the stream if YouTube drops it. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. To try it, start a StreamNeo account.
