To keep a Raspberry Pi YouTube stream playing through a power cut, back up the whole playback chain—not just the Pi. That usually means the Pi and its correct power supply, the router or modem, and any display needed for viewing. A compatible UPS HAT can keep the Pi powered; a conventional 230 V UPS can feed the Pi’s usual adapter and may also cover networking and display equipment. Neither option guarantees a particular runtime without your devices’ actual load and the UPS maker’s runtime data.
First decide whether you need playback to continue or only want to protect the Pi’s storage. A graceful shutdown can protect files during a long outage, but it stops the stream.

What has to stay powered for the stream to continue?
A YouTube stream can stop even if the Pi remains on. The Pi needs working internet, so a router, modem, or access point that loses power can interrupt playback. If viewers depend on a local display, that screen also needs backup. List every device that must remain operational during the cut and size the backup for their combined load.

This is a system-level requirement, not a claim that a particular UPS has been tested with your network. The exact equipment, power draw, desired outage duration, and local outage pattern determine what will work.

Check the Raspberry Pi’s power requirement first
Raspberry Pi Ltd recommends an official power supply suitable for the model. Its current getting-started table specifies these baselines:
| Board | Supply specification |
|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 5 and Pi 500 | 5 V at 5 A. With a 3 A supply, Pi 5 peripheral power is restricted to 600 mA. |
| Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and Pi 400 | 5 V at 3 A. |
| Pi 3, Pi 2 Model B, Pi 1, and Pi Zero entries | 5 V at 2.5 A. |
These are supply requirements, not measurements of every build’s consumption. Connected USB devices and HATs add demand. Raspberry Pi also cautions that voltage requirements are measured at the plug, so cable losses matter. Use a suitable supply and cable, and verify that a direct-DC UPS can maintain the required output under your actual load. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started power guidance has the model-specific table.

Choose between a UPS HAT and a conventional UPS
| Approach | Best suited to | Check before buying | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pi UPS HAT / direct-DC battery backup | A compact setup where the Pi is the main device to keep alive. | Exact Pi model and revision; output voltage and current under load; battery compatibility and charging; pass-through behavior; shutdown signaling; and runtime at your measured load. | It may not power the router, modem, or screen. Compatibility and output capacity are specific to the product. |
| Conventional 230 V UPS | A setup where the Pi’s normal AC adapter and possibly the router or display need backup together. | India-market voltage and plug/outlet fit; watt and VA limits; output behavior; battery replacement; and runtime at the full combined load. | It is larger than a HAT. VA alone does not establish suitability or runtime. |
| UPS with graceful shutdown | Long outages where storage protection matters more than continuous playback. | Supported status signaling and software, hardware-specific wiring, and behavior when mains returns. | Shutdown intentionally ends playback. |
Direct-DC example: SupTronics X1209
SupTronics lists the X1209 as compatible with Raspberry Pi 5, 4B, 3B+, and 3B. The maker specifies adapter input of either 5 V/5 A through USB-C or 6–18 V/3 A through its DC jack, and lists a 4.2 V rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Those input specifications do not, by themselves, establish that its output is suitable for every Pi build or how long it will run one. Confirm output voltage and current under load, battery configuration, board revision, connector fit, and runtime for your setup on the SupTronics X1209 product page.

Conventional UPS example: Eaton 5P650I
Eaton’s India product page lists the 5P650I as a 230 V line-interactive model rated at 650 VA/420 W with C13 outputs. This is an example of the category, not a universal recommendation: separately check outlet and plug compatibility, your combined load, battery condition, and the manufacturer’s runtime information. Size a conventional UPS for the full load
- Record the equipment. Note the Pi model, its supply, connected USB devices and HATs, router/modem or access point, and any display that must stay on.
- Find the load in watts. Use the devices’ labels or manufacturer specifications where available; for a useful total, include every device that must run during the outage.
- Stay within both ratings. A UPS has VA and watt ratings, and neither may be exceeded by attached equipment. APC gives general guidance to choose UPS output watt capacity 20–25% above the connected load. That is sizing headroom, not a promise of backup duration. See APC’s UPS buying guidance.
- Check runtime at your load. Use the maker’s runtime graph or calculator for the combined load and account for battery condition. Do not infer streaming hours from a VA rating or battery capacity alone.
- Check the electrical path. Confirm that the UPS output, outlets, cables, and Pi power adapter fit the equipment and the intended installation.
Watch for undervoltage as well as complete power loss
A stream may become unstable before mains power disappears if the Pi is not receiving adequate voltage. Raspberry Pi documentation says low-voltage detection on models since Pi B+ other than Zero triggers below 4.63 V (±5%). It identifies inadequate adapters, overloaded USB, and poor cables as possible issues. The documentation also warns: “Low quality power supplies can corrupt storage or cause unpredictable behaviour within the Raspberry Pi.” Use the right supply for the board and avoid relying on a marginal cable or overloaded power path. Details are in Raspberry Pi’s power-supplies documentation.
Decide whether to keep streaming or shut down safely
If uninterrupted playback is the priority, the Pi, network equipment, and any necessary display must remain powered for the outage. A shutdown signal serves a different purpose: it lets the Pi stop processes cleanly and protect storage when backup is running low, but playback ends.

UPSafePI’s PLC guide describes GPIO overlays for controlled shutdown when its UPS detects mains loss. That setup is specific to its hardware; do not copy its wiring or software assumptions to another UPS board. Check the exact product’s supported signaling and instructions, and test shutdown and restart behavior before relying on it. See the UPSafePI Raspberry Pi PLC guide.
Troubleshoot a stream that still stops
- The Pi stays on, but YouTube playback stops: Check whether the router, modem, or access point also lost power. Add the network equipment to the backup plan if it must remain online.
- The Pi reboots or behaves unpredictably: Check the model’s supply requirement, cable voltage drop, USB peripheral load, and UPS output under load. Low-voltage detection and power-quality warnings are covered in Raspberry Pi’s power-supplies guidance.
- A UPS HAT powers the board inconsistently: Verify that its documented output voltage and current meet the board and peripherals’ needs; adapter input ratings alone do not prove output suitability. Check battery and pass-through specifications with the HAT maker.
- The stream ends during a longer cut: The battery may be depleted or the total load may be higher than expected. Use the manufacturer’s runtime information for the measured combined load; no universal duration can be inferred from the UPS’s headline capacity.
- The Pi shuts down when mains fails: Determine whether the UPS is configured for orderly shutdown rather than continuous operation. Review product-specific signaling and mains-return behavior before changing settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream going rather than keep local Pi hardware alive, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing at home has to stay on; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded video playback, not camera streaming.
