To check CPU usage on Raspberry Pi OS, open a terminal and run top. For a desktop glance, add a CPU monitor to the panel; for scripts or logging, compare two readings from /proc/stat. These show CPU utilization. Temperature and clock-speed commands show different measurements.
Check CPU usage live with top
- Open a terminal, either on the Raspberry Pi or through SSH.
- Run
top. - Read the CPU summary near the top of the display. It reports CPU-state percentages, such as user work, kernel work, idle time and time waiting for I/O. On a multi-core system, additional lines may show individual CPUs. The display refreshes over time; press
qto exit.
The exact layout and categories depend on the installed top version and configuration. The system-wide CPU summary is not the same as the %CPU value on an individual process row; process percentages have their own definition and may be presented differently on a multi-core system. Linux top manual.

Use /proc/stat for a script or dashboard
The first line beginning with cpu in /proc/stat contains cumulative CPU-time counters aggregated across CPUs. Lines such as cpu0 contain per-CPU counters. The values cover states including user, nice, system and idle time; one reading alone is not a utilization percentage.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Read the aggregate
cpuline and save its counters. - Wait for the interval you want to measure, then read the line again.
- Subtract each first reading from its corresponding second reading. Use the counter differences to calculate the share of time spent in the states you define as busy.
Keep the calculation consistent and decide whether to count I/O wait as busy or idle; that choice changes the result. The Linux manual notes limitations in the I/O-wait field, so avoid treating it as a perfect measure of time spent waiting. Linux proc_stat(5) manual. For a script that needs a stable numeric result, verify the parser or statistics utility against the Raspberry Pi OS version and output format in use.

Show a CPU monitor in the Raspberry Pi OS desktop
On the Raspberry Pi OS desktop, a CPU monitor can be added to the menu bar, also called the panel. It is useful for a glanceable indicator or graph. The official documentation does not specify that its calculation or refresh interval will match a particular top configuration, so do not expect the displayed percentages to be identical in every case. Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation.
CPU usage, temperature and frequency are different readings
- CPU utilization describes CPU time spent in states such as user, system, idle and I/O wait. Check it with
topor interval comparisons of/proc/stat. - Temperature is a thermal reading, not a utilization percentage. Raspberry Pi documents
cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp(divide the raw value by 1000 for Celsius) andvcgencmd measure_tempas temperature checks. Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation. - Frequency is clock speed, not utilization.
vcgencmd measure_clock armreports an instantaneous Arm clock reading. Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation.
If performance drops under heat, cooling may matter because a Raspberry Pi processor can be throttled at high temperatures. Cooling is not needed just to monitor CPU usage. Raspberry Pi cooling guidance.
